| graddlin03-23-07, 04:29 AM | Hello, friends. I thought it might be fun to have a thread devoted to those wicked, evil, PC-hating ladies and gents that we, as DMs, love to make our players' lives miserable with. Come then, what major bad guy/gal holds the fondest place in your heart? |
| AffableDoomwalker03-23-07, 04:34 AM | Karsus (From FRCS). He tried to kill Mystra, that makes him a great guy in my book. |
| Razbat03-24-07, 12:38 AM | Jon Irenicus. Because he's voiced by David Warner. Who starred as Gul Madred in Star Trek: TNG and Ra's Al Ghul in Batman: Animated Series. |
| nightwyrm03-24-07, 02:47 AM | Kafka from FFVI. |
| CowMasterTrojan03-24-07, 03:47 AM | Sephiroth was better and cooler. |
| Redclock_the_Untimely03-24-07, 03:56 AM | From D&D - The Lord of Blades because spiky robots are fun. Personal preference - Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty for evil done right. For sheer creepiness - The Teletubbies because they'd frighten away Cthulu. :hides: |
| TalonofTiamat03-24-07, 10:48 AM | Let's hear it for the Lord of Blades.   My personal favorite villain is probably General Grievous (from the Clone Wars animated series). He was just so awesome. |
| High Octane03-24-07, 11:03 AM | Sephiroth was better and cooler. Ahem. As Lex Luthor, another fine villain said..... WRONG! Anyway, Lex Luthor is a fine example of a meglomaniacal villain. Despite the horrible movie that it was, M. Bison from Street fighter had my favorite villanous line of all time. After Chun Li gave her little speech on how her father died from his troops he says he didnt remember that day. "You have to understand, the day Bison graced your village with his presence and had your father killed may have been the most important day of your life, but to me, it was Tuesday." Arthas from World of Warcraft was another interesting one. A stupid rich kid prince paladin betraying his country in the highest possible manner. Illidan is also another cool villain. |
| Azerian03-24-07, 01:35 PM | Although the second game wasn't as good as the original IMO (note the IMO). I have to say that Kreia from KOTR 2 was my favorite villain. I mean, she tried to destroy THE FORCE. Not just a planet, or take over the galaxy she wanted to destroy the Force. Darth Sion was cool too. "Yah I'm a physical wreck of a human being kept alive only by my strength in the dark side of the Force. Yah every bone in my body is broken, so what if I don't have blood:rolleyes: anymore. The bottom line is I....Kill....You." |
| Orbb_was_railed_by_God03-24-07, 01:55 PM | One of my favourite villains is the Nameless One from Planescape: Torment. Nothing like tripping traps you set with the intention of taking yourself out if ever you happened to wander into your own tomb. |
| Soluphobe03-24-07, 01:59 PM | Ahem: Meepo the kobold. No, not that Meepo. MY Meepo. ECL 12 Eldritch Knight, CWI feat, and a lot of junk. Result: Everything in his ... lair ... is at least a one-use fireball, more often a unlimited use discharger of seeking rays (PHBII). He has been known to blind those who carelessly use Detect Magic. Essentially, if there is a spell under 6th level, he can cast it from a scroll or something. And yes, he has a Boccob's Blessed book. Three of them. After a near TPK using only one magic item (glove of scorching ray), the PCs (all of whom consider themselves min/maxers) were in shock. I'll never forget the look on the werebat drow monk's face... |
| Akagi03-24-07, 02:13 PM | From outside D+D it would have to be Mr. Sinister. From D+D it would have to be Vecna. Vecna started out as a minor drow encounter in the hall of the fire giant king but went on to cause untold mayhem in my game, and is now the Lich queen of Breeandal. |
| ChuutRiit03-24-07, 02:30 PM | Alfred Bester from Babylon 5 comes to my mind...(pun intended) |
| Kradlo03-24-07, 02:50 PM | Since it seems this thread is covering villains from books, movies, television, published adventures, and comics, I'll put my two cents in for the best villains from these. The insidious Doctor Fu Manchu, from Sax Rohmer. "Imagine a person tall, lean, and feline, with a brow like Shakespeare and a face like Satan. Give him long, magnetic eyes of the true cat green, and invest in him all the terrible knowledge of an ancient Oriental race, and you have a mental picture of Doctor Fu Manchu." John Sunlight, from Kenneth Robeson, the only villain to face Doc Savage and escape to face him again (Fortress of Solitude and The Devil Genghis). Ard, from the movie Heavy Metal. "Well, aren't we fierce? Guards, castrate him." Doctor Miguelito Loveless, from The Wild Wild West television show. You have to love a villainous genius midget with a penchant for elaborate deathtraps and beautiful women. I'll give a second vote for Maleficent. That lady had style! |
| MagicMouth03-24-07, 03:22 PM | Arthas from World of Warcraft was another interesting one. A stupid rich kid prince paladin betraying his country in the highest possible manner. Illidan is also another cool villain. Agreed. I also like Deathwing: the ancient, corrupted Dragon Aspect of Earth who, in his arrogant madness, wants to make all creatures bow down to him, no matter if they are human, elven or demonic. In D&D, one of the favorites has to be Strahd von Zarovich from Ravenloft. He is monstrously evil and of great power, but is tormented by the deeds from his past and his obsession with Tatytana. What´s more, he cannot be permanently destroyed: the Dark Powers are seemingly determined to make him suffer eternally for his crimes. |
| Solian03-24-07, 03:35 PM | Roy Batty from Blade Runner, can you get any cooler than him? Lex Luthor has to be one of my favorites, and he's kinda funny too. Magneto Also, very cool kinda guy. Lobo, (Lobo 1, Superman 0) Darth Revan. The mask is just cool by itself. Asem from Kingdom Hearts, and his Nobody Counterpart Xemnas from Kingdom Hearts 2 were also very cool. Garland from Final Fantasy 9 Seifer from final Fantasy 8 Gravemind from Halo 2 Another Vote for Malificent The list just keeps going and going for me, i love villains |
| Arisune03-24-07, 04:07 PM | Artemis Entreri - the BEST damn assasin in the forgotten realms universe. |
| AntiDjinn03-25-07, 12:12 AM | For campy BBEGS: Evil from Time Bandits (played by David Warner, mentioned previously in this thread. He seems to excel at playing the bad guy). Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg from the Fifth Element (played by Gary Oldman). Dr. Strangelove (Peter Sellers). Sometimes a villain who is way over the top and doesn't have both oars in the water is just plain fun. |
| Hakar_Kerarmor03-25-07, 12:35 AM | My favorites? Spoiler alerts. Shodan --- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YLMk1E41kE The Ur-Quan --- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEFALqujPPU |
| Gilganarz_the_reporter03-25-07, 01:00 AM | Sephiroth was better and cooler. If by 'better', you mean 'more emo' and 'cooler' you mean 'has mommy issues'. Seriously, they make a joke about his wimpiness in Advent Children. As for my favourite villains: Ultros from FF6, there was just something about a joke villain that ndeared me to him. Lobo, DCs ultimate badass. Count Strahd von Zarovich, one of D&Ds classics The godess Sharn, one of the few beings, fcitional or otherwise, who hates FR more than i do. Reeves, a werewolf lord villian in my Eberron game. |
| Keeran03-25-07, 01:08 AM | #1 - Bill (Alla Kill Bill) #2 - ANY Drow Matron =P #3 - The Shark from Jaws. lol |
| Keeran03-25-07, 01:11 AM | Artemis Entreri - the BEST damn assasin in the forgotten realms universe. /Agree Entreri 4TW! :) |
| Keeran03-25-07, 01:20 AM | Oh! Scorpius (maybe - rusty memory) from Farscape. Kriton's (sp?) nemesis. You know, the creepy-looking peace-keeper-kind-of-leader-guy. :) |
| Hydryh03-25-07, 01:36 AM | King Ashnard of Daein, from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. Spoilers follow! I like this guy because he started out as a very minor noble who could've been just a footnote in history. Instead he embraces the quasi-Darwinian mantra of "survival of the fittest," and becomes so hardcore a soldier that he can take down enemy squads singlehandedly. Feeling that the nobles of his land are too weak, he concocts a poison and distributes it throughout the nation. This "plague" kills thousands, including (not coincidentally) everyone between himself and the throne. Finally, in an effort to test the mettle of the entire world, he hatches a plan to unleash the mad destroyer-god of his world. Any who survive will be the strongest, and therefore the most suitable to live. He isn't even annoyed if you kill him, because that just means you were stronger and therefore more worthy to shape the world. Now that is dedication to a philosophy! |
| TheOinodaemon03-25-07, 03:40 AM | Darth Vader. Especially during the Empire Strikes Back. Dr. Doom, Thulsa Doom, and Lord Soth follow him closely. There will undoubtedly be more, I go to movies and read books because I like the villains, not the heroes. |
| YamiSouru03-25-07, 04:03 AM | to be honest most likely the villain i have come to hate the most out of any villain i have EVER seen would have to be the Blight lord from the campaign i am playing in right now. First when we get sent into this forest the blight lords illusion pops in front of us and begins the normal gloating, however instead of the normal gloatin he actuelly takes the time to single out each charactor and tell them right off what it is they do and so on, includieng my binder who had gone through extreme measures not to be found out, and then the illusion ofthe lord said my binder would end up working for him and his god..the very god who's clergy had destroyed my binders home. Next we were constantly attacked by lesser demons as we progressed through the forest, forced to watch the illusion of a cities destruction (where the images would reach out to us and cry for help) that was so severe it halfed everyones constitution with the except of the insane charactor, but the scene was so bad it mad him sane. Oh and finally while we slept in what we thought was a safe house we had all our gold stolen so the blight lord could use it to bet with the demons on if we were going to survive or not. Needless to say at this point the party almost isnt out for just the reward for the quest, they all want to kill this blighter in the most painfull fashion possible..includeing the paladin  |
| Banning03-25-07, 04:18 AM | -hangs head back and thinks hard- Well... Theres Kefka, and he is SO cooler than Sepiroth. All he did was summon a stupid meteor, Kefka reshaped the face of the planet. I expect him to show up in an Eberron camp I'm in (DM loves FF 6) Malificent is ALWAYS awesome. Period. The Jabberowcky AND Mad Hatter from American McGee's Alice. My personal favorite of the month is none other than a man so deep hes unfathomable, a man so quick hes even fast asleep, the steel handed stingray, Captain James Hook. I recently bought the DvD Hook and run a Stormwrack Campaign. EDIT: Skullkid and Majora's Mask. Three days... three days... |
| Jenny With The Lantern03-25-07, 07:25 AM | Jarlaxle from the Drizz't books is one of my favourites. Though he's nasty and tough he's also a charismatic guy you can really grow to love. |
| Fend03-25-07, 08:03 AM | DND - First up im mortified to find that NOT A SINGLE MENTION ... of the Arch Fiend Himself, Asmodeus was given in this entire thread??? FOR SHAME... he is the patron of Villans. The one Who made the pact primevil? who cheated the gods themselves and created damnation and still plots to damn yet more souls to current day :) He is a villain indeed. And an inspiration for countless many other villains who do his bidding. And what of mephistophelese? Who's plans to some day thwart asmodeus's reign over the hells by reaping a bumper harvest of souls through his persistant schemeing and the gift of hellfire to his cultists... is he not the inspiration for all villain kind? Book - With all them asside tho my favorite villain would have to be Artemis the assasin from the Drizzt novels. He was just so complex and dark. Game - Bishop from Nwn2... Oh my god was he awsome. complex, troubled, out for himself and plain awsome. |
| Mrloki03-25-07, 08:19 AM | The main noble from wolfs rain. (darchiea?) Vicious from Cowboy bebop Billybob thortan (oh wow, he made another movie where hes an ass!) Sauron from lord of the rings, anybody who can destory and conquer, and not even be in the damn books/movie is a true baddie! Baal from diablo 2:lords of destruction (an awsome cut scene) Bahamut from FF9 Good ole sephiroth The dragoon from FF2 |
| Nebo03-25-07, 08:58 AM | Shodan from System Shock |
| graddlin03-26-07, 01:48 AM | Very nice, ladies and gentlemen!! One of my personal favorites is Ashram from the Record of Lodoss Wars OAV. Now there is a nassssty fellow! I also absolutely love to despise Jhon Baptist Emanuel Zorg from the Fifth Element. (Great movie!):D Fantastic turn out, friends. I aplaud each of you for making your voice heard.Any other villains of note? |
| Terraneaux03-26-07, 02:37 AM | From D+D it would have to be Vecna. Vecna started out as a minor drow encounter in the hall of the fire giant king but went on to cause untold mayhem in my game, and is now the Lich queen of Breeandal. Look man, you need to re-check your facts on Vecna. Vecna is an awesome villain, but his coolness comes from the fact that his power is entirely self-acquired; his mom was a hedge-witch who taught him the basics of magic and his power from then on was entirely self-acquired. He became the most feared ruler of the Ur-Flan, and laid the basis for much of modern magic, including the power word spells. Btw Sephiroth is a little pansy. Outside of DnD, check out Raven from Snow Crash, Alter from Y:The Last Man, and of course Dr. Doom. Can't beat the Doc. |
| Cyanide30003-26-07, 02:53 AM | In no particular order... Darth Sideous from Star Wars Q from Star Trek TNG Magneto from X-Men Doctor Octavious from Spider Man |
| CroBob03-26-07, 03:11 AM | The dragoon from FF2 Kain, who was not a villain, he was being mind controlled. |
| TheOinodaemon03-26-07, 03:42 AM | Vecna! How could I have forgotten about Vecna? He's on the list. Also Jason Voorhees, Pazuzu from the Exorcist. |
| Oron_Rubic03-26-07, 07:31 AM | I second for Captain James Hook. One of my favorites. As a fan of KH I would say Ansem too. His speech before the final battle is awesome (Bill Zaine's voice is just perfect). However i didn't liked Xemnas. No style at all. Dr. Neo Cortex! Twinsanity made love this guy. Sure is nothing close to serious but still he rocks. The Elder God from Soul Reaver. This guy could really kill you with his endless speaking and his HUGE ego. And Kain too. But he is not a villain... or is he? Asmodeus. There is nothing more to say. Vecna makes me laugh. Maybe because he doesn't exist in the campaign settings we are playing :D Ixidor from Magic:the gathering. My Favorite. Greed from Full Metal Alchemist. Not a villain exactly but he was a blast. Vol. The fact that this girl actually is alive (in a sense) and still pull the stings give the creeps. The Dealkyr are great too. I mean they are artists! |
| nightwyrm03-26-07, 03:47 PM | Kain (FF IV) isn't a villain. He just has the hots for his best friend's girl and frequently gets mind controlled. Some good anime villains: Shishio from Rurounin Kenshin Freezer from DBZ Chairman Durandal from GSD Naraku from Inuyasha |
| ArchonJohn03-26-07, 03:55 PM | Zarzapul. (He's scary) |
| Climhazzard03-26-07, 04:20 PM | Just my 2 CP but... Kefka: From Final Fantasy VI, this man made the whole 'insane clown' BBEG cliche funny, twisted, and down right warped. His quotes range from memorable to downright evil, and he was had something witty to say. Add that with the fact that you fight him throughout the story, witness his atrocities, and has the best BBEG theme song (better than One Winged Angel), Kefka deserves his place as one of my favorites villains. Sure, Pennywise, the Joker, and John Wayne Gacy were before Kefka, but when was the last time one of them said "son of a submariner"? Kuja: Yup, that girly, thong-wearing androgyne from Final Fantasy IX, IMO an underrated game. Compared to other villains, Kuja's appearance did not inspire terror or fear, but crap was he evil. He doesn't go around murdering random people, that's too barbaric; he'd rather manipulate rulers into using his weapons to cause war and death. Kuja was built for inciting war, yet he wanted much more than that, he wanted to be importance. In an ironic twist, his destruction of the Original Crystal at the end of the game may have created all of existance, making him the catalyst that made creation. Nom Anor: From Star Wars, everyone's least favorite Yuuzhan Vong makes a damn good villain. He was always one step ahead of everyone and has the worst enemy of the Jedi at the time, due to demagoguery (sp) and fearmongering. But compared to the other Vong, who served their gods, Anor always looked out for #1. |
| graddlin03-26-07, 04:45 PM | As a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series, I am inclined to agree with those of you whom stated that Kefka was one of the coolest. Who can forget that fantastic laugh? ("Reeehheeeheee") |
| Balseraph03-26-07, 05:05 PM | I haven't made my PCs miserable with any of those villains :P In fact, I usually don't have to do anything at all for them to make themselves miserable. Honestly. I just have to provide the framework and they are happy to torment and torture themselves. I have a player who has to almost physically restrain himself from being orphaned at a young age... Anyway, most recently I enjoyed leading my PCs on a merry chase with a villain who, at no point in time was who they thought he was. Long story short, the antagonist was actually someone that the party fighter/barbarian owed his life to and was masquerading as his own dead brother, leading to great in (and out of) character speculation as to what kind of undead he was. "Have we seen him in sunlight?" "Did he know how to cast arcane spells? Is he a lich?" Ahhh.... good times, good times. |
| _Jayne_Cobb_03-26-07, 05:13 PM | The aliens from the recent War of the Worlds. For the first time in one of these armageddon/human genocide flicks I actually felt that the human specie was in peril. |
| Imatash03-26-07, 05:27 PM | Okay Freddy.....kills kids in a dreamworld when they sleep.... I will take the watch everytime in that world, you go ahead and get some rest! Remember Player Characters die....:) Imatash |
| Shatteredtower03-26-07, 06:09 PM | General Woundwort from Richard Adams' Watership Down. Vorbis, from Terry Pratchett's Small Gods. And Fang, director of X-Tel, from a collection of Phil Foglio's Buck Godot (http://www.studiofoglio.com/cgi/buck.cgi?date=20070109) stories, (the specific story begins here (http://www.studiofoglio.com/cgi/buck.cgi?date=20070210)) for the reasons provided in the strips posted on March 3rd (http://www.studiofoglio.com/cgi/buck.cgi?date=20070303), 6th (http://www.studiofoglio.com/cgi/buck.cgi?date=20070306), and 8th (http://www.studiofoglio.com/cgi/buck.cgi?date=20070308), 2007. Oh, and also Bangledesh Dupree. All kinds of scary. |
| valcarde03-26-07, 07:24 PM | Just my 2 CP but... Agreed. If I had to choose between having Sephiroth or Kefka as my arch-enemy... I'd take Sephiroth. At least -his- plans are straightforward: Crush your face. Dealing with Kefka would take a hell of a lot more work... and mental preparation! "Ahem... There's SAND on my boots!" Kefka also inspired one of the more fun re-occuring villains in the campaign I'm running currently. Someone called the Harlequin: Runs around in your typical harlequin mask, red and gold jesters outfit, Cape of the Mountebank for quick escapes, prefers to taunt the PC's into dancing to his own tune. They hate him so much that if they even -see- a white mask, they get jitters XD |
| Blue Mage Yui Ikari03-26-07, 07:35 PM | Chad, from In The Company of Men, perhaps one of the most vicious, ruthless, downright evil characters to ever appear on film or otherwise. Of course, this isn't exactly the sort of place where ten-year old Canadian indie movies are discussed regularly, so... The villain from Watchmen is another all time favorite, not for so much as who is or what they do (which was pretty awesome still), but why they carry out their agenda, and the lucidity of the explainations. "'Do it?' Dan, I'm not a Republic serial villain. Do you seriously think I'd explain my master-stroke if there remained the slightest chance of you affecting its outcome? I did it thirty-five minutes ago." |
| The Jake03-26-07, 08:32 PM | Irenicus. Closely followed by TIAX! Arthas from WOW, Kitiara and Lord Soth from Dragonlance. Then of course, Raistlin Majere... |
| OneEye58903-26-07, 08:58 PM | You know who I think are good villians, but never get any credit? Team Rocket from Pokemon. Jesse, James, and Meowth were GREAT villians. What made them so great was that they tried to be the villians, but they never were, technically. Whenever something came up where they were in trouble, too, they would go along with Ash and his friends, then backstab them later. Sadly, they always lost, but that was just because they made Pikachu too powerful. And I've always liked villians who were just doing what they have to, or what their nature is. Like the bear in Fox And The Hound. He was just a huge bear, they trespassed on his territory, so he attacked. The squid from 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea is another good example, along with Jaws. That's what I always like to do in my campaigns, hav some big creature that just lives there, not his fault if you barge in. |
| Tichrimo03-26-07, 09:49 PM | I cannot believe this hasn't been said yet: KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN ! (Or did I just show my age?) |
| graddlin03-26-07, 11:15 PM | I cannot believe this hasn't been said yet: KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN ! (Or did I just show my age?) Revenge is a dish best served cold..... |
| Tichrimo03-27-07, 12:28 AM | I've done something better than kill you... I've hurt you... And I wish to go on hurting you... (Except that it's far better when read by Ricardo Montalban.) |
| CroBob03-27-07, 01:26 AM | You know who I think are good villians, but never get any credit? Team Rocket from Pokemon. Jesse, James, and Meowth were GREAT villians. | graddlin03-27-07, 01:31 AM | I've done something better than kill you... I've hurt you... And I wish to go on hurting you... (Except that it's far better when read by Ricardo Montalban.) Indeed, friend, indeed. ...from hell's heart, I stab at thee...for hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee... |
| KendallDM03-27-07, 02:52 AM | Darkness from the movie "Legend". Tim Curry did an excellent job, but the way he was defeated, meh. |
| Rough_Trade03-27-07, 06:22 AM | Frank Booth from Blue Velvet. |
| Zumarai03-27-07, 07:49 AM | Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (genius/sexually depraved – what's not to love?). |
| DuelistsHeart03-27-07, 08:55 AM | Jigsaw from Saw. Crazy old men creep me out.. especially ones that use puppets! Tybalt "The Cat" Capulet from Romeo and Juliet. Sly, witty.. and great with a sword. Darth Vadar..cuz well.. it's Vadar! Nuff Said! |
| JimRuh03-27-07, 09:10 AM | Well my favorite and my players worse was just an extremely old guy named Imilick. He was about 50, and had no lvls in anything. He just knew how to surround himself with much more powerful players. And he controlled the entire black market arts |
| graddlin03-27-07, 05:10 PM | Very nice, friends. You all have made this thread quite entertaining. Rarely have I seen such a huge gathering of BBEGs; the things that go bump in the night must be very proud! Keep it up! I'm sure there are more nasties needing mention! Take care, friends. |
| ChuutRiit03-28-07, 07:55 AM | Needs moar B5 villains! :D I already mentioned Bester (hey, no comments about him? Aren't there any Babylon 5 fans in these boards? ) so there are also: President William Morgan Clark (authoritarian bastard, sold out the earth alliance to the shadows secretly and using his power to become one of the pettiest and nastiest tyrants in human history) Mr. Morden/The Shadows ("What do you want?" Ulkesh (Aka Kosh Vader) ("Irrelevant. Obey!" that's his attitude, not an actual quote) Lord Refa (pushed for the Mass-Driver bombing of the Narn homeworld back into Stone Age) Emperor Cartagia (Decadent & Depraved Madman deluxe. Keeps the severed heads of his ministers in a secret room as his "Shadow Cabinet" and furthermore strives to become a God by help of the shadows - with his own homeworld as asendancy pyre!) |
| Treymordin03-28-07, 08:08 AM | MAGNETO or Dr. DOOM in Marvel. Raistlin Majere in DL. |
| Steely_Dan03-28-07, 09:58 AM | Raistlin Majere in DL. I always thought of Rasitlin as more of a tragic anti-hero…or misunderstood? |
| Crash16903-28-07, 02:34 PM | I don't know if he's a villain exactly but my vote goes to Tyrion Lannister from the, "A song of Ice and Fire" books. As well as Sandor Clegane, from the same series. Kefka over Sephiroth. That laugh he had was so gold. My buddies and I still joke about it till this day. That part where he poisons the water.. Memories... I also agree that Ashram from The Lodoss War anime was a great villain. Jarlaxle from the R.A. Slavatore books Lestat from "Interview with the Vampire" |
| nightwyrm03-28-07, 02:46 PM | I always thought of Rasitlin as more of a tragic anti-hero…or misunderstood? The reader is sympathetic to him because a lot of the story is told from his point of view, but objectively, in D&D terms, he's definitely a villain. That whole trick Crysanthia and leave her to die in the abyss and kill the gods to take over the world thing fits pretty much into what BBEGs normally do. |
| graddlin03-29-07, 12:32 AM | Who can forget King Longshanks from Braveheart? Now there was a rather unsavory fellow, if I do say so myself. But he was a great villian, all the same. |
| AntiDjinn03-29-07, 01:46 AM | The Master from Doctor Who (original series). Cheesy or chilling depending on which incarnation. Certainly power-hungry, but with time travel he could have had power with a lot less work than he put into his schemes of conquest and revenge. He seems to have been evil just because he liked it. The Joker (comic version, some aspects of Jack Nicholson's version, the animated version voiced by Mark Hamill, not the silly version from the TV serial). Especially as depicted in The Killing Joke and Arkham Asylum. For a real over the top CE villain whose motivations can't be discerned (least of all by himself) and who leaves even his victims laughing. Darkseid. Bellicose omnipotence with class. Also from DC: Eclipso, the Emerald Eye (plus whatever human "master" it has in tow), Lex Luthor (already mentioned), and Dr. Sivana. |
| TheHarrow03-29-07, 02:09 AM | Darkness from the movie "Legend". Tim Curry did an excellent job, but the way he was defeated, meh. Blix the Goblin! All goblins IMC come from that archetype. Earth to the 1980s: Skeletor and Hordak, yo! Also known to those in the d20 know as Thorskel the Lich and Dak'Hor the Demon King |

| Steely_Dan03-29-07, 08:59 AM | What other evils need be mentioned? Nurse Ratchet from One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. |
| graddlin03-29-07, 09:24 AM | Nurse Ratchet from One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. NICE. I dig that one, friend. |
| Steely_Dan03-29-07, 09:38 AM | NICE. I dig that one, friend. Right on, I was about to start muttering, "Nobody gets me." in my best Bill Murray voice (ala Scrooged). |
| _Jayne_Cobb_03-29-07, 10:13 AM | I always thought of Rasitlin as more of a tragic anti-hero…or misunderstood? I always though of him as a poncey emo tool, but maybe that's just me. |
| _Jayne_Cobb_03-29-07, 10:15 AM | Blix the Goblin! All goblins IMC come from that archetype. May be innocent, may be sweet, ain't half as nice as rotting meat. >ptui< Nice. |
| Tyraxus03-29-07, 10:20 AM | The Princes of Amber from Zelazney's Chronicles of Amber. They may not all be villains technically, but every one of them would make a hell of a BBEG, even Corwin, because they're not only capable of anything, but would actually do it. The Pattern and Logrus from Merlin's books in the same series are villains, because each wants to destroy the other which would destroy the universe, and they make a pair of pretty awesome villans. Mandor I never saw as a villain, but I guess he could count as a plottin/scheming villain and he's just cool. I'll second Lord Vader in TESB, and also Sauron from the Lord of the Rings, on grounds of sheer badassery. Q as well for the "The trial never ended," line and the way he tormented Picard. Briza and Matron Malice from the Drizzt prequels are pretty cool, and Malice gets style points for her handling of Zak. |
| Kradlo03-29-07, 10:53 AM | Ah, The Chronicles of Amber, one of my favorite series. The only thing nastier than a Roger Zelazny villain is a Roger Zelazny hero. ;) Let's go for historical villains. Hassan i Sabbah, founder of the order of assassins. This is the "old man of the mountain," the master of Alamut. His fortress was on a jutting fang of rock thousands of feet high, virtually impregnable to conventional attack. Hassan i Sabbah smuggled himself inside and took it over from within. He built a garden with lush vegetation, flowering plants, and clear running water, and placed beautiful slave girls within it. Then when new recruits were brought to Alamut, Hassan had them drugged with hashish and brought into the garden. When they awoke, they were amazed at what they saw. Hassan told them that this was paradise, and it was only a small sample of what they would experience if they died in his name. The recruits became fanatical devotees, the first assassins. The caliph became perturbed that this fortress, which lay within his demesne, did not pay tribute to him. So he sent an army to besiege the fortress of Alamut. The army lay camped at the floor of the valley surrounding the mountains. One morning, the caliph awoke in his tent to find a dagger thrust into the pillow next to his face, with a note upon it. On the note was a single word: "Negotiate." The caliph sent his three most trusted advisors to Alamut to dictate terms. The three were allowed within the walls, and were given audience with Hassan i Sabbah. The old man of the mountain listened dispassionately as the advisors spelled out the caliph's terms. When they were finished, Hassan pointed to one of his men, and snapped his fingers. The man drew his dagger and slit his own throat from ear to ear. Hassan pointed to another man on the walls, and snapped his fingers. The man leapt from the walls to the rocks below. Hassan turned to the caliph's advisors and said, "I have forty thousand more just like them. How will you take me?" The advisors, shaken, returned to the caliph, and new negotiations were offered. Hassan i Sabbah remained in control of Alamut, free of tribute, and in return he became the eyes and ears of the caliph. |
| graddlin03-30-07, 01:27 AM | Kradlo: Yes!! You are quite right, friend. Good stuff! GOOOOD STUFF!! |
| lastknightleft03-30-07, 09:25 AM | In my campaign the villian to be is Herai Ifaust, he's the son of a mayor who got sent away from home when he tried to force himself on a local village girl and got thwarted. What the characters don't know is that the mayor sent him away to an influential school where he became a political force to be reckoned with. The characters are responsible for the death of his father, so he came back while the PCs were off adventuring, took over the town, killed one of the PC's father and has a messenger tracking down the PCs to deliver her father's peg leg to her with a note that says "now we're even" |
| High Octane03-30-07, 11:19 AM | Nurse Ratchet from One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. http://www.afi.com/tvevents/100years/handv.aspx She made #5. Everyone check that list, 50 great movie villains. And 50 heroes. |
| Quoriil03-30-07, 01:42 PM | The Operative, from Serenity... just ignore the conversion at the end. There is something about an implacable, amoral stalker with the wealth of nations at his disposal. And I have to second Raven from Snow Crash. |
| Sargon03-30-07, 06:22 PM | Scarecrow from Batman Begins has always been a favorite of mine, Scary with that posion and Mask. I've made several attempts to stats that posion but never any luck And while i'll Agree the GRevious, Maul, and Vader and even Dooku where great villians They wheren't the evil master Mind that the Emperor was "OH i'm sure the deflector shield will be quite operational when your friends arrive..." |
| Elsydeon03-30-07, 07:12 PM | Alex from A Clockwork Orange |
| Tichrimo03-30-07, 07:29 PM | The Angel Islington, from Neverwhere; Gendo Ikari, from Evangelion. Both weaving evil tapestries of plans within plans in order to achieve their ultimate goal (both, ironically, being ascension to godhood/undoing creation). |
| Agent Cooper03-30-07, 09:04 PM | I'm very fond of Belak the Outcast, the insane evil druid bad guy from Sunless Citadel. I was intrigued by this guy right off, and since one of the players is a Ranger, Belak made a great foil for him. I just couldn't let him get knocked off at the end of the mod. So I polished him up, gave him a good backstory, and I've used him as a recurring villain who pops up now and then to make the characters lives difficult ever since. He's alot of fun to play, and the group really gets a kick out of (hating) him. ;) |
| conkeestedoray03-30-07, 09:33 PM | Though it crosses some of the 'religious' boundaries, I'll always be amused by the villians from "The Prophecy" the roles of Gabriel (Christopher Walken - "And you get to kill. All day and all night. Just like an angel.") and Lucifer (Viggo Mortenson -- "I love you more than Jesus" -- can't watch The Fellowship of the Ring without that line in my head when Aragorn is leaning over the dying Boromir...) And just to give some love to villians I grew up with: Megatron and Cobra Commander -- and you can't do better than a planet eating Orsen Welles as Unicron in the Transformers Movie... The man just has a knack for making worlds tremble... :) |
| Tichrimo03-30-07, 10:13 PM | Well, if we're gonna bust out the 80's cartoon villians... Mumm-Ra from Thundercats -- evil mummy who has to cast his evil spells with eeeeevil rhyming! (And his henchman, Sslithe is wonderfully creepy, in a campy way.) |
| king0thepirates03-30-07, 10:45 PM | wow i'm surpirsed no one mentioned megatron yet!come on!in G1 he coudl turn into a giant gun,and in beast wars(one of my favorites) he was just so evil and cunning(and a rubber duckie!),sure he lost a few times but he still manged to screw over the good guys quite a few times. Also Kane for the Command and Conquer series was a great villian, who doesn't love a relgious madman with alien tech and an odd obcession with a shiney green crystal? |
| lastknightleft03-30-07, 10:48 PM | what was the name of the evil brother in Tri-gun? he makes a great villian, hell that whole group of villians that came in after wolfwood was great |
| Rhyvurg03-31-07, 01:41 AM | I'm shocked and appaled that no one mentioned the greatest Bond villan of all time: 1)Goldfinger "Do you expect me to talk?" "No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die." 2)Yellow Bastard and 3)Kevin from Sin City. Sucking the flesh from a woman's severed fingers while she was forced to watch? Damn. 4)Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs. 5)Hannibal Lecter. 6)Red skull. I mean, the guy killed Captain America. 7)Another vote for Maleficent. 8)Emperor Jagang from the Sword of truth series. |

The man just has a knack for making worlds tremble... :) Starscream was an even better one. The conniving second in command who did nothing else but planned the downfall of his master just to take his place. Of course Megatron was even cooler when he became Galvatron since Leanord Nimoy did his voice. As for Unicron.... he ate planets. HE. ATE. PLANETS. |
| Kraleck03-31-07, 08:55 AM | Rhukk (a villain I once ran) - CE and Psychotic to boot, he once cracked open an illithid's skull (with his bare hands while it was still alive) and drank the fluids just because he was thirsty (among other strange and bizarre behaviors). Basically he became an aberration and created several pets (other aberrations) he dubbed "Cannimals" (both he and the cannimals ate other creatures and developed said creatures' powers, 1 HD eaten granted 1 permanent hit point and 8 hit points gained granted another HD to the cannimals). I think he ended up with an illithid's mind blast, a minotaur's horns, a manticore's spike throwing tail, medusa hair, and several other tasty powers before he was finally taken out. I miss that villain... |
| Hydryh03-31-07, 12:42 PM | what was the name of the evil brother in Tri-gun? he makes a great villian, hell that whole group of villians that came in after wolfwood was great That would be Millions Knives, although people generally just call him Knives. He and Cell from Dragonball Z are anime's way of proving that just because your name is odd/dumb, that doesn't mean you have to suck as a villain. And yes, you've got to love his second-in-command, Legato Bluesummers. A fine LE. In fact, a lot of my favorite villains are LE... Legato Bluesummers, the Black Knight (Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance), Darkseid (DC Comics), Doctor Doom, the Serenity Operative, Darth Vader, and Lex Luthor, to name but a few. Muwahahahaha! It will all be mine! Er, ours! |

| zvbxrpl04-01-07, 06:00 PM | A Tainted Sorceror that I ran in a gestalt campaign. Her name was Elizabeth Sunmeadow, and rather than choosing a new name that spoke of doom and melodrama, she reveled in the irony of her given name. She would routinely eat fallen minions in front of the PCs, and was a conneisseur (sp?) of life energy absorbed with Vampiric Touch. She also enjoyed showing off effects of the taint, just to gross people out, and she would routinely cough up toads, rats, spiders, internally grown thumbs and toes, and the occasional eyeball. It kind of goes without saying that I enjoy grossing out my players. It's one of the few cruelties I engage in as DM. |

| Drascin04-02-07, 12:56 PM | Chalk another one for Maleficent. Yay for petty (seriously. Cursing a girl to eternal sleep because her father forgot to send you an invitation? Okay, someone here needs a talk about overreaction) yet extremely cruel evil! And her role in KH was just great (pity she stopped reading the Evil Overlord's list too soon. Especially, the part about NEVER shouting "I am invincible!". As per canon, you kick her ass seconds later :P). And another one for Kefka, too. He was irritating to no end, but you gotta admit the guy was pretty good as the megalomany thing. Also, given that the main purpose of a villain is making the readers/watchers want to gut him with a rusty spoon, I'd like to nominate Griffith, from Berserk. That guy is just... well, to sum up: he ends up sacrificing all of his military squad, all of whom worshipped him and considered him a great friend, to an army of demons, so he can turn into a greater demon too. Then, after a few more acts that can cause sheer repulsion (such as raping Gatsu's beloved in front of him), he gets back to the world, with his old form and looks, posing as the "savior" of the world, and attracting thousands of deluded people (who still trust him from when he was a great general) to their untimely deaths to fulfill his own ambition. And I'm only about halfway in the comic. Not a bad trajectory, uh? ¬¬ |
| Escef04-02-07, 03:47 PM | From my D&D games. Verth. A spirit who was once a general in an ancient empire. He interacted with the world by possessing clothing, favoring an outfit of boots, pants, shirt, gloves, and cloak; all black. Originally made to be a Nazgul rip-off, he grew beyond this simple concept. He was an accomplished warrior (long and short sword style), and clever, learning from his errors. He innovated. After having been foiled by the PCs a couple of times he took to following them without his garments, making him invisible. They found out about this and took steps to stop him from doing it. After another defeat, the players faught him while he possessed an ancient construct, then almost immeadiatly after, the found a room with black curtains everywhere, where he had stashed extra outfits and weapons about the place, giving the effective ability to appear almost anywhere in the room. Finally, when he last fought the PC who's cleverness repeatedly thwarted him, he attacked from hiding, smearing his foe with contact poison that he had covered his gloves with. The players hated Verth, not because they couldn't beat him, but because they couldn't kill him. |

| King_Pellinore04-03-07, 03:39 PM | Lareth from T1 - The Village of Hommlet, even managed to beef him up and bring him back later on in the Giant series. Great fun!:D |
| green_yawgmoth04-03-07, 04:10 PM | In general: Emperor Palpatine. He should have his pic as the definition of LE. In my games: Yawgmoth, the NE lich that lives in the bottom of the Lair of the Keeper. Whether or not the PCs meet him depends entirely on them, but he's always there, meddling in someone's life. He created the Rod of Wonder, which is a major artifact in my games. He can communicate with anyone who picks it up. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| StalkerEntreri04-03-07, 04:36 PM | Artemis Entreri - the BEST damn assassin in the forgotten realms universe. I totally agree with that. And also Raistlin Majere. Saddler from Resident Evil 4 The ultimate villain against metal : New Metallica :banghead::censored: Alex from A Clockwork Orange Absolutely. |
| Saric04-03-07, 04:44 PM | The tomb of horrors, its the first time I ever saw my players treat a location as a villan in its own right. My favorite Villan would have to have been Leonard, a wizard who paid homage to vecna. I intsituted him as an information giver who approached the pc's exchanging information of his enemies, which also happened to be their enemies as well. Being very delicate in his ways, he engineered many events and supplied the information, to gain even more trust from the pc's. Once his major enemies were eliminated, he started to manipulate the pc's by asking them to prevent powerful artifacts and magic items to falling into his opponent's hands. And in the meantime he would give the exact same information and desires to other individuals who wanted to kill the pc's. In the end, he took advantage of said situations, and managed to weasel his way into getting many items, without really having to work to get them therby increasing his power. The best part about playing him was the fact that he knew he stood no chance at fighting the pc's in a straight up fight, and he was lower level than the pc's significantly. (you might ask how could a lower level wizard help a higher level party, how can level 9 clerics help a level 18 party when their cleric dies? same reason) Also he wasn't the main villan, which made him twice as interesting to play, since most of the time he was trying to subvert the main villan's plans as well. Since he still is in play, and hasn't been thwarted per se, I can't post stats or anything of the sort. (since my players read the boards) All I can say is, Eventually there will be a showdown when the pc's least expect it, and he will be on par with them. It will be an event to remember. |

Smaug - Sets the bar for dragons. Ungoliant - Shelob's mother. Magneto, Khan, Hannibal Lecter, Dracula Nice line-up, but I'd heavily disagree with the God-Emperor. True, he DOES devour those souls, but then you have to see: a) The Emperor has been encased in the Golden Throne for 10.000 years, slowly dying and suffering agony all the time while battling the Chaos Gods, imparting guiding visions to key persons in the Imperium from time to time, etc..he IS all which is good and noble in mankind. He did not want that to occur which lead him up to this point. If the Horus Heresy hadn't happened...but that's idle speculation about a fictional universe. b) The psyker souls fed to the emperor are all unstable and/or rogue psykers (afaik iirc), which pose a significant threat to mankind because of them being prone for daemonic possession/corruption and stuff. Most, if not all of these psykers actually PREFER being consumed by the emperor than having their essence corrupted, devoured or what else the Ruinous Powers can do to them..yes, Warhammer 40k is a very ****ed up place. I thought I had to correct. Mind you, I am not a WH40k gamer (although I was a player in Ik'kaan's D20 WH40K campaign) and know most of the fluff by second hand, but unless I've been blatantly lied to, this should be correct. :) |

Mind you, I am not a WH40k gamer (although I was a player in Ik'kaan's D20 WH40K campaign) and know most of the fluff by second hand, but unless I've been blatantly lied to, this should be correct. :) You're pretty much right. Out of WH40k, I'd pick any of the overzealous inquisitors or Tyrranid Hive Tyrants over the Emperour (yes, with a 'u' the way God, the Queen, and Games Workshop intended! ), not to mention any one of the Traitor Chapter Masters or Daemon Princes. |

| Kozeljnik04-04-07, 12:12 PM | SHODAN, from System Shock/System Shock 2 simply perfect in every way. greatest female villain of all time (save for eventual girlfriends/ex-wives one might have :P) Unicron, from Transformers: The Movie he's voiced by Orson Welles and eats planets to boot. what's not to love? another vote for Maleficent Tharizdun wants to undo the universe, himself included. that's determination Megatron, Starscream and all the decepticons simply classic villains |
| Thought04-04-07, 12:19 PM | The best of the worst? In no particular order... Two by Two, Hands of Blue: They make people bleed from their eyes, are ghosts in the cortex, have blue hands, and the corporation that they work for is everywhere in your daily life, from t-shirts to toothpaste to terraforming materials. Morgoth the Enemy (if Sauron is going to be mentioned, then it is only right to include his old boss). He created dragons and orcs. The Seer and GI Guy from Kid Radd: The former is a computer virus that is plotting to manifest itself in the real world and the latter is a video game sprite that planned to destroy earth as revenge against human players Megabyte and his sister Hexadecimal, from ReBoot Bloth and the Dark Dweller from The Pirates of Dark Water (though Bloth might count more as a nemesis rather than villain) Professor Weston from C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy: Kidnaps a fellow university professor in order to sacrifice him on an alien world in order to be allowed to gather more gold, then he gives himself over to "The Bent One," becomes possessed, tries to corrupt an entire race, and is more than willing to animate his body after it has been killed five times over. The White Witch: She destroyed all life in her universe, including her own family, just to "win" a war, then went on to corrupt a new world and eventually kills God (he got better)! Professor Moriarty, the napoleon of crime The Head Alien from It's Walky! He tortured hundreds of humans, created a giant Honey Bun, armed his second in command with monkey cannons (yes, they shoot monkeys), arranged for Martians to destroy all major cities on earth so he could rule in the wake, and he took over the mind of the manifestation of the universe. And he was killed, resurrected, and inhabited the body of an exact opposite clone. Carnage: Crazy alien symbiote? Yeah, that spells happy times Lord Voldimort: The guy split his soul into sevenish pieces, just to make sure he wouldn't totally die, and he can talk to snakes. Really, I could go on but I think that is probably enough |
| Kradlo04-04-07, 02:30 PM | One of my favorite movie villains was Prince Koura from Ray Harryhausen's The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, played by Tom Baker of Doctor Who fame. The movie also starred John Phillip Law as Sinbad, and the luscious Caroline Munro as Margiana, a lovely slave girl. |
| Soloran04-04-07, 04:13 PM | Books: Tywin Lannister from George R.R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' was a man whom I both hated and admired at the same time. His daughter Cersei Lannister redefines the title: 'cruel, heartless b*tch.' Also, Lord Frey from the same series. (The 'Red Wedding' was just utterly brutal) Movies: Tony Montana. 'Nuff said. |
| ChuutRiit04-05-07, 06:42 AM | You're pretty much right. Uhm, what? Do I fail at reading comprehension of sarcasm/irony/provocation or wasn't my point clear enough? |
| Akagi04-05-07, 08:34 AM | After thinking about this some more it occurred to me that one of my favourite villains is Wessker from Resident Evil 1. I don't know if 'favorite' villain is the right word, but he's certainly the villain I most want to see suffer. I've been waiting God knows how many years to take this slimy SOB down, preferably in as painful a way as possible, but the games designers just won't give me the satisfaction I crave. |
| Alariel04-05-07, 10:11 AM | I personally use Baba Yaga and a being known as the Grelloth Noxus in most of my campaigns. The latter is an artifact mask that possesses the wearer with the psyche of the paragon ultraloth. |
| Hydryh04-05-07, 10:33 AM | One I've been thinking about a lot lately, but forgot to list before: Gabriel Yu-Law: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_One_%28film%29#Known_Interdimensiona l_Offenders You've got to love his attitude, right up to his last lines in the film (paraphrased): "I am Yu-Law! I will be the One! I am no man's b****; you are mine!" :evillaugh |
| Steely_Dan04-05-07, 10:40 AM | "Egg Shen! Egg Shen! I have found two girls with green eyes! I shall marry them both! And sacrifice Tracy Law to appease my emporer, and live out my earthly pleasures with Mao Yin!" - Lo Pan "Are you insane; is that your problem?" - Jack |
| DraconsNighthawk04-05-07, 05:58 PM | Here are some villians that my players love to hate... Vargas: A rakasha warrior/mage. (Duskblade). He seems intent on spreading chaos for fun. Wants to awaken the Tarrasaqe. They thought they killed him several times, but he always came back stronger, or he'd escape. Later found out that Varagas was the sword, and not simply the Raska doing a change self spell. Most hated by the barbarian and the paladin. Xena: (Player made her, I just made the stats...). A player's sister who became a pirate after their parents were killed by her brother (Who proclaims that he is innocent, and doesn't jknow how he got the inhertince at the last second... wink wink...). She appears to own a elven battleship that has many weapons. She /owns/ the seas and has a legion of pirate skeletons as a gift from Lars. Most hated by the wizard (her brother), and the paladin since she /stoled/ the elven boat. Lars: Unknown to them, but he has been manlipation them from the start. A lich of incredible power, he is currently helping them and their enemies awaken the Tarrasaqe for unknown purprose at this point. No true hatred by any of them, but I'm going to guess the monk willl hate him the most. /Twiddy-dee/ Twiddy-doo/ is these two brothers nicknames. A fighter and a wizard brother team. They attack the ranger on siight. Ranger takes them on solo, and manages to chase them off for a time. Nether knoew each others name, or why the even fight. It just is. The sons of King Obould Many-arrrows: They have fought and barely won against two of them. In both cases the sons manage to escape death. Whatver plans they have, the partry wants to stop it. Rumor is they are getting magiacal equiptment from a lich. |
| Orbb_was_railed_by_God04-05-07, 06:12 PM | Walter o' Dim, the Man in Black. From The Dark Tower novels by Stephen King. Or possibly the sentient, evil scrying orb Black Thirteen. "The man in black opened the box and inside Black Thirteen crouched on red velvet, like the slick eye of a monster that grew outside God's shadow." Utterly awesome. |

I've been waiting God knows how many years to take this slimy SOB down, preferably in as painful a way as possible, but the games designers just won't give me the satisfaction I crave. If we're talking villains that we love to hate, Scorpius from Farscape is by far one of the worst. Every time I see him, I want the writers to kill him off...but he NEVER DIES! |
| graddlin04-07-07, 05:13 PM | "Are you insane; is that your problem?" - Jack "I am the past come back to haunt you, Lo-Pan!"-:D |
| Khan200004-08-07, 07:53 PM | Me--I'll come up with some NPC that's better than the maxed-out character of a player and have them fight, with the NPC barely even fight and still win. :D |
| Volafor04-08-07, 08:23 PM | General Woundwort from Richard Adams' Watership Down. WOW--mad props to you for this. I'm stoked to see this story mentioned here. Woundwort is an excellent villain; you could use him as an example to new players of how Lawful Evil is supposed to be played. what was the name of the evil brother in Tri-gun? he makes a great villian, hell that whole group of villians that came in after wolfwood was great Yeah, Millions Knives. Good call.... The rest of the Gung-ho guns were good, too, especially in the manga. My favorite is Legato, though. I am a Stephen King addict... Sara Tidwell from Bag of Bones, Walter o'Dim from the Dark Tower series, and, of course, good old Norman Daniels from Rose Madder. You could list practically any of Terry Pratchett's villains, but my personal favorite is Teatime from Hogfather. "It's 'Teh-ah-TIM-eh.'" |
| Yodaman2304-08-07, 09:18 PM | Adalai Niska from Firefly. Pure evil in a old russian man package. |

| Gilganarz_the_reporter04-08-07, 10:16 PM | How about this one Gaston from Disney's Beauty and the Beast? In any other tale, he'd be the hero, nobely challenging the terrifying monster to win the heart of the one he loves. In this tale he's an arrogant, immoral, self-serving brute who wishes to kill a creature for his own personal gain. Makes you really think about the stance of heroes doesn't it? |
| Relic04-08-07, 10:20 PM | The Predator. Kaiser Soze (Sose?) The Ottoman Queen from The Tick Skytel from The Terminator Disney (damn you Magic Castle and expensive vacations!) |
| Hakar_Kerarmor04-09-07, 01:13 AM | Disney (damn you Magic Castle and expensive vacations!) Yes. yes indeed... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13s5_gE092s&mode=related&search= |
| Escef04-09-07, 03:28 AM | The Predator. I've always had a hard time seeing The Predator as a villian. In both Predator films he was not out to inflict pain or suffereing. He was a hunter looking for a tough kill, he wanted to test himself. A cunning, brutal opponent? Most Definately. A villian? No. I could see a Predator like NPC as a rival or opponent, but not as a villian. |
| zvbxrpl04-09-07, 11:39 AM | How about this one Gaston from Disney's Beauty and the Beast? In any other tale, he'd be the hero, nobely challenging the terrifying monster to win the heart of the one he loves. In this tale he's an arrogant, immoral, self-serving brute who wishes to kill a creature for his own personal gain. Makes you really think about the stance of heroes doesn't it? Very much so. He could easily be translated into D&D as a Ranger that started out as an adventurer like the PCs, but who came to serve himself rather than those he was supposedly helping. |
| Unnatural clone04-09-07, 01:22 PM | Favourites villains? Well... :plotting: Out of D&D, I will say: - Venom, from Spiderman (it's just a kind of beast, that's no so frequent for a villain...) - Broly, from Dragon Ball Z (for the same reasons) - Darth Vador (maybe because my father like him too...) - Kuja, from FF9 (a magician-style Sephiroth, I agree; but I really like his manner to treat everyone, and his madness. "I'm so important that I can't die! The entire world cannot exist without me! I'de rather destroy the entire Creation than leave the world without me!") - Kaku, from One Piece (I don't have seen him fighting, but someone who jumps in the sky can't be a bad character.) Unfortunately, I don't really know the D&D villains. But I believe that everyone will love his homebrew villain more than any other one. ;) See ya! 8) |
| Orbb_was_railed_by_God04-09-07, 01:32 PM | You speak english just fine, Clone. And you are right, everyones homebrew villains are going to be their favourite. Mine is the thousand-year-old vampire ex-paladin who made himself a vampire and caused his own fall during an interesting temporal paradox, then held his "old" self hostage for the next thousand years until the PC's killed his "new" self, and set free his (now 2000 year) "old" self. |
| Hydryh04-09-07, 01:51 PM | Orbb, I like your villain. Reminds me of Garland/Chaos from Final Fantasy. |
| Orbb_was_railed_by_God04-09-07, 02:15 PM | I never played any of the Final Fantasy games, I'm afraid, so I don't really know what Garland/Chaos did. This vampire's "new" self was livid at the "old" self for turning him (which was unfortunately out of necessity), making him lose his Paladin Powers(tm), and so held him hostage, as he couldn't bring himself to kill himself. If that makes sense! And thanks! |
| Relic04-09-07, 02:21 PM | I've always had a hard time seeing The Predator as a villian. In both Predator films he was not out to inflict pain or suffereing. He was a hunter looking for a tough kill, he wanted to test himself. A cunning, brutal opponent? Most Definately. A villian? No. I could see a Predator like NPC as a rival or opponent, but not as a villian. An opponent who, while the PCs are trekking through the jungle, hunts down each member in the party to skin them and claim their skull, leaving the dead hanging from some tree like a discarded piece of useless carcass, what blood remains slowly draining and dripping to the jungle floor below... while the PCs try not only to identify what is hunting and killing them but to prevent said killing. While not a climatic end-of-the-campaign villian, for a couple of sessions he could, indeed, be the BBEG. That is especially true if you spice it up a little bit. Maybe the Predator skins his victims alive and uses their skins to acquire their powers, much like the tales that are associated with skinwalkers. (I'm sure I've seen a prestige class that dealt with this very thing, maybe in that Dragon magazine that had some nice villian classes/prestige classes). |
| Relic04-09-07, 02:27 PM | A couple of other villians: Urban campaign: Jabba the Hutt. His vast criminal organization could surely be the main focus of an urban campaign. PC Antagonist: Boba Fett. Every time the PCs are about capture that goon that has the information they need Boba Fett gets to him first or hinders them to the point that their target manages to escape. Classic Evil Sorceress: Bavmorda, from Willow fame. Her goals are world domination and mastery of dark powers, all at the expense of not only her own child but the innocent baby of an exiled priestess. |
| Yodaman2304-09-07, 06:23 PM | All Power Rangers villains, especially Lord Zed. |
| Pathanus04-10-07, 12:21 AM | Apocalypse - X-Men Azazel - Fallen movie Nightmasks - Thieves guild in Westgate, FR The Fratelli's - Goonies movie Biggs and Wedge - when you fight vs. them in Final Fantasy series Thumbs up for many that have already been suggested too. |
| Khan200004-10-07, 01:40 AM | You speak english just fine, Clone. One of my own creations--a Raksasha whose name I cannot remember at this time (I think he caused me to forget). [reference from my earlier post] Said Raksasha is named Cahlo Faerjan, a swashbuckling sorcerer-archmage fighter who runs a slaving ring, plus has a coliseum for entertainment. Trust me when I say you would rather fight his lackeys than him and really hope that he isn't there if you are fighting his lackeys. |
| Holy_Beholder04-11-07, 12:47 AM | Opal Koboi. The ultimate villain. Checking a clone into a mental hospital in a BS trance is just brilliant. Plus, she is actually somewhat intelligent. Meaning that ventilation ducts are not a way into her fortress. Cugel from Jack Vances Dying earth was pretty good too. |
