What is your all times best/favourite published scenario ever? In D&D, Ad&D (1st or 2nd ed.) or D&D 3E.

I just love that old "Treasure hunt" for 0 level characters (old 1st editon AD&D) - it has somehow a great atmosphere in it.

Also that DL16 "Dargard Keep" is truly fun adventure for high level characters.

Whats yours?

Easy, Tomb of the Lizard King !

A black dragon, evil clerics, lizardfolk, rooms full of bandits, undead, and Sakatha the lizardfolk wizard vampire! The original templated, classed BBEG!

And who can forget some of the NPCs?! Stephen DeManis the crazy old hermit..."There are snakes in my hair. Why won't they comb it?" Hilarious!

Hmm...I've got that one in my closet...What if I converted that to 3.5? Hmmm...Aulicus the very old black dragon is much too powerful in 3.5 for a module for 7th-level characters...Have to make him much younger...'Tis possible, 'tis possible...

Bah, a thousand times bah.

You're still short a 100 HD Colossus, a ghostly feast, a delusional ogre, origional deck of many things and insane bishop short of castle amber.

The original Ravenloft module. When it came out it changed the game of AD&D for very many people.

A thousand times a thousand bahs on your 100HD zombie. The thing has a glass jaw shattered by throwing a vial at it.

Bah! A slide into a burning pyre that equals instant death, plus an illusion on top of an illusion on top of a vat of acid?

Can't compete!

A 100 HD Colossus.... HOLY ****!

I have a group that is currently playing 1st Edition, as none of us had done so... Unfortunately, we split. And unfortunately, I'm stuck in Castle Amber. I'm so screwed. It's a tough cookie to crack, but I wouldn't call it fun.

Our level 21 mage was beheaded. Our 12 level wizard elf (Yes, wizard elf.... DM just shrugs and refuses to answer questions about that one) was turned to stone. The first level fighter dies, of course. The 10th level warrior dies to black lotus dust. Oh, and an 8th level mage gets turned into a ghost.

So, that leaves the level 6 elf, me, alone to ****ing take on this dungeon. I'm sooooo screwed.

I'm actually thinking of making a deal with the Demon trapped in the pentgram. But, I'll just burn me out of existance anyway... Yay...

I hate this dungeon.

My vote is on Ravenloft I6, or the Desert of Desolation series. Ravenloft as a player and Desert of Desolation as a DM, I loved running the puzzles in DoD.

Old stuff, has to be Tome of Horrors and the Drow/Spider Queen series, although the Slaver Series was just great fun as well!

New stuff, I really liked Return to the Temple of Elem Evil, great and broad game, very richly written, full of details.

Toejam! Toejam! Toejam!

That's what we used to call the Gygax killer classic, The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth. The module that introduced such DM faves as the Bodak and the Behir. Plus a bunch of the demons that later appeared in the 1E MM2.

Are there going to be any 3.5 modules that are published?
Mitchell

07-13-04, 02:47 AM
They have produced a single line of modules for 3.5, and two major adventures, Return to the temple of elemental evil and City of the spider queen. Everything else is more likely to be like the last two than the first bunch. They didn't figure there was enough profit in producing modules, so they leave that to 3rd party publishers. Yes, there are plenty of modules out there, but you have to watch them lest you let some great error creep into your campaign.

As for my favorite??? Nobody else has said it, so I'll go with the Bloodstone series.

Gotta go with the Dragonlance Chronicles. It was a little heavy on railroading...but who wouldnīt want to play out one of the great Fantasy series in the last 30 years?

Another sentimental favorite is the Bloodstone series, one of the few not dedicated to nerfing any character that finally achieves great power...you get to marry the Baronīs daughter and eventually become a King! (Twas not the fate of my mod-Cha Mage, but SOMEONE got to marry her).

The Tomb of the Lizard King is great as well. I thought that the Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil and the Spider Queen books were still 3.0.

My favourite published module in ANY game system is "Twilight's Peak" by GDW for the original Traveller game. THis module is without a doubt the best scenario ever published for any game system. The blend of horror, mystery, sci-fi, and dungeon-type elements is superb and seamless and the variations in tone and pace fantastic. Furthermore, the revalations within are at times jaw dropping.

My favourite D&D module is the Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun. An absolute masterpiece of dungeon design. The module starts with some nice wilderness encounters and a tie in to the Lost Caverns of Tsojanth. Then it erupts into one of the best larger-scale battles in D&D history (I especially love the giant hurling round boulders like bowling balls down the main pathway and across the narrow bridge. The entire battle to gain entrance into the temple will be memorable and an instant classic in any campaign.

But that's not all. After that, the tone shifts and you get to explore this really creepy lower temple. The atmospheric descriptions are wonderful, and lend a really creepy air to the whole. The encounters are nice, and you get a small dungeon crawl that does not become tedious. The finally is really nice, and a good payoff for the effort.

All in all, the Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun has it all. Wilderness, a mass combat, and a wonderful dungeon crawl.

A close second would be N1 Cult of the Reptile God. Again, it has a lot of nice elements well meshed together. There is a great central mystery to solve. The module starts in a town, not unlike Hommlet, and as it is a 1st level adventure, there is lots of chance to role play and really sink your teeth into the town, which is fully described in loving detail. There are a few nice encounters and creepy clues in the town as well.

After that, a short wilderness trek with some nice encounter charts presented for the area of Greyhawk in question. Then a really well-designed dungeon crawl with a nice, climactic ending puts a good finishing cap on the whole.

I think that the older modules necessiated more thinking than some of the newer things. Being designed for larger groups was great, 4 people can have an awful time in some of these newer modules, case in point, Speaker in Dreams.

Oh Vecna Lives is a great module too!

You ran Speaker in Dreams ? How was it ?

I can vouch for Speaker in Dreams, I have ran 7 of the 8 Adventure Path series from WotC, and I have to say Speaker and Forge of Fury were the funnest, move adventuresome of the the series. Both had a larger grand scale style to it, many of my players referred to it as "classic" dnd.

I forgot Keep of the Borderlands . . . wow, what a great old adventure, loved that one over and over again. Against the Giants series also brought back great memories for sure!

I was THINKING of adding it into my Dragonlance: Age of Mortals campaign as a sidetrek for the players. Is this adventure usable in Dragonlance ?

But from what I read it was SOOOO tight. Answer this, Does Dragonlance have Illithids and all of the creatures on the module ? The only problem I think may be with the wererats.

See THAT is where I would have a problem. The rest I could EASILY insert into my Age of Mortals campaign. I would just have to find the right locale.

I think it works best in a larger city. Maybe free of the Knights of Neraka, but it might work even there.

Major mailfunction here. Werecreatures do exist in Krynn. Mindflayers and even DROW exist in Krynn. Only creature that has never appeared in official material (not counting that old "comical" andventure - "Orcs return to Krynn" - is orcs.

Ok... now you thinking "Well, maby wererats, but drow?" They were both creatures that were imported there by no other than Lord Soth him self. You can find them in (more than official) DL 16 "Dargard Keep". Soth has it all... werebears, wereboars, wererats, weretigers, werewolfs and many drow wizards and fighters.

One of my players was just dieing to play drow in my evil DL campaing. So I let him make a drow elf assasin - working for the Lord Soth. Most of the people in Ansalon thought he was an half elf (remember that black people do exist in Krynn - no luck for you KKK people) or just some nasty freek. But ofcourse he had to stay in shadows as much as possible. So this would suggest that some werecreatures and drow just might have got loose from Nightlund and you know how fast those bastards "breed"... there might be werecreatures allover the place now.
