What's the best animal (other than the velociraptor) to have my 6th level druid who's fighting the party wildshape into (He's not from Chult, so he wouldn't think of the dinosaur), from a standpoint of what will help him the most in a battle?

A question before i answer :) . What type of role does he fill in the party battle wise? Does he prefer to be right in the middle of combat or sneak around looking for an opening to flank or etc.?

He's the BBEG of the adventure. Basically wildshaping is going to be his last resort when his minions go down.

The highest CR I see for a Medium animal is Deinonychus, CR 3, 4 Hit Dice, pounce, four natural attacks, 60' speed. However...

I guess it depends on what you want to do. Against only a few characters, constrictor snake is good. Wolves get free trips, which is nice with Combat Reflexes. Dire weasels can deal Constitution damage. Leopards get five attacks in a charge.

You're assuming that the PCs won't be focusing on killing the druid first. That's a bad thing. Still, I think leopard looks pretty neat.

Cheetah or crocodile.
They get you the same armor, the crocodile gives you 18 str (grapple!) and a better attack (+12). The cheetah gives you punce and free trip attempts, and it is faster (50 ft).

So if you have water near you and/or you want to grapple go for crocodile. If the pcs have high AC go for crocodile. If you want to be fast, trip, and/or the PCs have low AC go for cheetah

It really depends on the druid and where he's traveled to. Unless I'm mistaken Wildshape is restricted by the druids personal experience. So if the druid has never encountered that animal they can't take its shape. The example used in the PHB I think is a polar bear...the druid can't Wildshape as a polar bear if they've never seen one.

I would determine where the druid is from and where they may have gone on their travels, and then check the wilderness random encounter tables (either from a sourcebook for the appropriate region like Unapproachable East or the generic ones that come with the FR DM Screen) for something cool, but logical. Since you eliminated the velociraptor (and dinosaurs) I get the feeling you want something that makes sense.
