Amazingly, I have found a situation where the "DM Smite" was welcomed...

One of the players I ran a game for was lucky... really lucky! He always passed reflex saves, scored criticals, attacks against him always just failed to hit...

So anyway, the party sets up camp at the edge of a forest, and a storm moves in. His Cleric gets into an argument with the Paladin. Long story short, it ends with the Cleric standing up, arms wide and crying "Fine! If you're so damn sure, why doesn't your god just smite me here and now!"

So I smiled and said "At which point, you are struck by lightning and killed."

Now I didn't mean that seriously, and it got a laugh from the group, but he decided he really did want to be killed like that, and was happy to make a new character (he said it got him the title of "Best Death Ever!").

He's now become a Psychic Warrior, and is really looking forward to trying out the Psionics stuff.

Maybe it's just me, but when the PCs in a group WANT to die, I begin to worry about the way the game is going.

That depends on the situation. Sometimes, such as in the above case, if such an opportunity comes along for a fun, memorable death, it can be more fun for the player to let that stand.
It's when the players are actively trying to kill themselves that the problems begin

Yeah, much better to go god-smitey on your cleric than to have an accidental triple-20 kill off the guy, or something. (Not that this seems to be possible)

For the record, I have been in a game where I wanted my character to die. The DM just wouldn't let my character die, going so far as to have a random cleric pop by for a true rez. I mean, story's good and everything, but that was just stupid.

Anyway, if everyone cheers the player who mysteriously dies due to god-smitey, something must have been done right.

I wouldn't say he wanted to die... he did want to change characters, so I guess he considered this the best time.

Yeah - as long as character switching doesn't happen to often, it's not that bad. The only problem is if you hang the storyline on that one person - which shouldn't happen anyway.

I doubt he will. It's just he always winds up being a Cleric, and I guess he got tired of being a walking med-kit.

He was also joking afterwards that he deserved to be killed because he "broke Rule 1".

Rule 1 in our gaming circles is "Do not give the DM ideas". ;)

I decided that his Psychic Warrior replacement would, conveniently, have exactly the same XP as the Cleric, so he isn't being penalised.

It is also widely agreed that, from now on, the party will be extremely pious... and never wear copper. :D

That's an important rule in our circles as well, stemming from the time one of my players suggested "What if those ogres that we ran off a couple of sessions ago have taken up residence in the ruined keep?". 2 minutes later I had the keep's occupants statted out.

Yeah, that's happened with me as the DM and as a Player. My group follows that rule too!

As for the "Best Death Ever", I think that was great. If the player liked it and it works well with your campaign, to you and your group!

this isn't a "dm smite", persay. a "dm smite" happends when a dm is fed up with a player or character and kills him off without having to RP it or roll some dice. this is simply letting a player create a new char in a "flashy" way ;) .

actually, you might have a plot hook on your hands. why would a good god smote someone without a real reason? maybe an evil cult is secretly doing random killings, in the name/trademark of said god? maybe the paladin wants to seek vengence on the killers who mocked his god and killed his ally? to the plotmobile!

anyways, happy gaming!

thats pretty fun. the most funny thing i've done to a player, was when one of my players (CE) provoked his boss a bit too much. then the boss took his big badass axe and delivered him a non-lethal strike with it, and send him out cold in an instant :D

I hear ya, man. There's got to be some degree of lethality in a game for it to have any semblance of gut-churning exitement IMHO. I get pretty bored pretty fast if the DM's handling the PCs with kid gloves. Sound like your group is having a good time, Wargamer.

It is also widely agreed that, from now on, the party will be extremely pious... and never wear copper. :DWith the exception of the Psychic Warrior, of course, who wasn't there when it happened and thus probably thinks the pack of religious fanatics are nuts. :D

That said, if I was there I'd probably pray twice a day from then on and never miss a call for charity.

You got yourself an enviable group of gamers, Wargamer. We should all be so lucky.
