Does the Black Tentacles spell start causing bludgeoning damage immediately if a grapple check is successful or does it only occur on subsequent rounds after casting? It's not very clear in the spell description:

I would suggest that the spell Black Tentacles or Evard's Black Tentacles as it is known in the PHB causes grappling damage each round it wins the opposed grappling check, including the first round.

Several things makes this spell different from the way Grappling works in the rules.

#1 - no melee touch attack necessary - this is an area affect spell and so touch attack in needed

#2 - no unarmed damage deal with the first successful opposed grapple check

#3 - since the spell does not specifically say that this damage is not dealt on the first round of the spell, it is logical to adjudicate that the spell functions as written each round of its duration.

#4 - <this has been specifically spelled out in an eratta> once the victim escapes from the spell, regardless of when it is, the spell does not attack him/her/it again unless they leave and then return to the area of effect.

Hope this helps, have a great game!
