One of my players, a Wizard 5/Mage of the Arcane Order 7, wants to have a blink dog as a familar. If it's possible within the rules, I'd like to allow that, but not have it be too powerful. Perhaps have me control the blick dog rather than the wizard, since it is an intelligent animal.

Is this even possible, what feats would it require, and how do you think I should present the options the wizard has to him?
Thanks!

Complete Arcane actually had a feat, Improved Familiar, that explicitly lets a Wizard get a Blink Dog familiar, provided he's of the proper alignment and level. It's not OGC, though...

First, the wizard would certainly need the improved familiar feat (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#improvedFamiliar). Although the blonk dog isn't on the lists, I think it would certainly be acceptable with a minimum arcane spellcaster level of at least 7.

And it would only be appropriate for certain types of wizards - ones that concentrate on plane-walking, invisability, teleporting, etc. - not a typical fireballer...

If he took Leadership as a Feat, he could also get one as a cohort.
