Korlall 04-14-06, 10:45 PM	In the Frostburn book, they said that a Frostmage must spend 24 unprotected in a blizzard... What's the exact effect of a blizzard... How cold it is ? at page 13, it is said that blizzard is accompanied by witheout conditions and heavy snow. is it cold, severe cold, extreme cold or unearthly cold. I thougth it might be extreme cold (-50 to -20) but it seems impossible for an unprotected character to survive in for 24 hours (which yould mean to roll a save a each 10 minutes at a DC of 15 +1 for each preceding checks or suffer 1d4 of non-lethal damage). 24 hours means 120 save checks for total of 120d4 non-lethal damage.... How come an unprotected character (no warm cloth, no protection items or spell) can survive this ?
druidess4life 04-17-06, 11:57 PM	A Blizzard by deffinition is a lot of snow and wind, with next to 0 visibility. By deffinition you have to take the windchill into account with the outside temperature, which may result in hypothermia or even frostbite. you take a normal outside temp of 0 degrees add the typical Blizzard wind speed of 35 MPH, and you get a windchill of -49 degrees. As for your other question it is something that is not to be taken lightly, and to be safe the character in question should have a high fort save as well as a descent number of HP. Also since it is non lethal they will basicly be getting hurt on a failed save, and then heal a a little.
Vaelan 04-18-06, 12:54 AM	The maximum amount of damage taken is 24 nonlethal/hour. The average, assuming you fail all of your saves, is 15. A level 5 character heals 5 points of nonlethal per hour. This means that you will take, on average, 10 points per hour for 240 points total. A wand of Cure Light Wounds, used by a cleric that is tethered to you and is allowed to protect himself with spells, is capable of healing 275 hitpoints.

You're saying that a spell named protection from cold isn't protection. That alone should give you the idea that you're wrong. :) I believe that the intent is for you to feel the full effects of the blizzard.
Solidcobra 04-18-06, 07:24 AM	Which would make entry into this PrC direct suicide for any and all wizards, which, aside from sorcerers, are the only ones who would even consider taking this class. Actually, it would be suicide for all arcane casters. I presume that using your spells, and not natural protection, would work. Either that, or only wizards who roll 120-ish 20's in a row work. Also, of course, no races with cold immunity can get this PrC, why, that would be using protection! :rolleyes:
Rivelstraz 04-18-06, 07:59 AM	For a second I thought I was at the WoW forums...(thread title) It seems like a very harsh requeriment. It seems like you're forced to pick up some ranger-like feats to survive through it.
Fraser1986 04-18-06, 09:07 AM	it makes intuitive sense that you be allowed to use magic to help you survive. After all, a frostmage relies apon magic so using your magic to help you survive a blizzard demonstrates using your arcane powers to overcome the cold. This combination of cold and magic seems to be the essence of the class
