I have a player who wants my Eberron D&D campaign to be nothing but combat...:weep:

He wants absolutely 0% Roleplay, 0% Plot, 0% Friendly NPCs, 0% Traveling, 100% Combat-y, gorey, goodness...

people who readmy posts from last month may remember my players who's ten years old....This is him.

I have a kid who wants to learn to play D&D, he's 10 and he's a real nice kid.
But, he wants D&D to be something it's not. He wants none of the stuff i said above...Roleplay, Plot, NPCs, Traveling,....

I asked him if he liked fantasy type stuff before i introduced him to D&D, he said he liked Lord of the Rings, The Legend of Zelda, and Eragon.
now after trying to teach him for 2 months, he mentions he liked Zelda games but he always just skipped through all the talking and never read anything.

He watches Lord of the Rings.. I'M NOT JOKING! I watched it with him in his house... He fast-fowards to the parts where theres fighting.
The same with Eragon.

He has no Anger issues, has lots of friends, and has good manners.

It seems like he's not even trying to learn the game, we've played every Saturday for 2 months now and he still can't remember what type of dice to roll for attacks... and no he is not "special"

He lives right across from my house, so i see him every day. I can't just kick him out of the group, and my other players all want lots of roleplay, to them combat is just something extra.

It's gotten to the point where if i'm not running combat he starts to bug other players to stop roleplaying and hurry up. And at random times will annoy me by begging me to do combat.

Sometimes when there's no enemies he'll attack party members:

(while traveling through snowy plains)
him: do i see anything to kill?
me: no it's a barren wasteland, you don't see anything but snow for miles.
him:ok,...i sneak over to a rock, hide behind it and shoot our druid.:evillaugh
me:ok, just roll for hide, move silently, and you guys rol- (interupted)
him: i actually have to roll?
me: yes...
him: awww,...what do i roll?
me: .....the d20.
him: which ones that?
other player: the one with 20 sides.
him: oh... nevermind i don't do it.
other player: why were you going to do it anyway?
him: because i want to kill something!

I had to roll a random encounter to end his complaining, this was last saturday. He was playing a Spirit Shaman that another player helped him make. He was basicly the group's primary healer.. with a STR of 9, but he just runs into melee.
He's played Fighters, and Barbarians before. He just thinks they're boring because they don't have Animal companions.

I was going to just let him play a fighter with an animal companion just to shut him up, but my other players made me realize this:

If i bend the rules for him, he's going to expect every DM to bend to what he wants. No one in the world wound want this in their games.
I do not want to unleash him into the world as a D&D player until he can play right.

Any suggestions?, please help...:weep:

Suggest to him that if he behaves himself through the main session (that is, acts sensibly and joins in the roleplaying) you'll run him a solo "kill everything in sight" game afterward.

It's not like it'll be hard to plot :D

Tell him no.

Plain and simple. If he wants to play a violence-only campaign and that doesn't fit your style, then let it be known.

Edit: or do what Ack suggests.

Hmm... he is 10 though... I don't think you can reason with him. Just fighting seems like the only reason a little kid raised on videogames would join.

I had a 12 year old in a group I was in, but he was insanely mature. I think he was like a genius or something.

Most people probably don't take up D&D until at least 14-15 I would think.

He'd be old enough to understand a rewarded behaviour though. And you might even be able to use the solo session to subtly train him to play well with others; for instance, push enough goblins at him and sooner or later he's gonna need healing. And who's gonna heal him but this cleric - but only if he's nice to the cleric. :D Otherwise his character dies. Yes, he can make up a new character next week for the solo game - but that one won't have the cool stuff his old one picked up in the dungeon...
