| The Soul Collector02-22-05, 01:33 PM | Hello Board People, Just a quick question, has anyone bothered to use bloodlines as described in the UA? I can see the use for them from a flavor/roleplaying perspective but it's my opinion that what you get in exchange for a level or 3 is really lacking. Is this your opinion also? Is there an errata for it? Any of you guys make a fix for it? Well, thanks in advance. |
| Nomad4life02-22-05, 01:34 PM | You may have better luck with this question on the UA forum? |
| Tolby02-22-05, 01:46 PM | I have no experience with them. However, I do think they may well be worth it. Especially levels that grant the +2 to an ability adjuestment. A lucky 18 and you have a 22 Con by level 3. |
| The Soul Collector02-22-05, 01:48 PM | Nomad4life: Your right, I should have put this in the UA forum, sorry about that. Tolby: You only really get a +1 to a stat and the benefits you get are streched 20 levels. |

| CzarGarrett02-22-05, 06:29 PM | It makes sense, at least as the basic mechanics go. You could be a Half-Fiend from the start, and be an ECL 5 character with the hp, skills, and abilities of a 1st level. OR, you could go with even a moderate bloodline and be an X4/Bloodline 1 with comparable powers to the Half-Fiend, still an ECL 5, but with the hp, skills, and abilities of a 4th level character (with caster level of 5th level). I think its a lot smarter to go with bloodlines rather then templates. |
| Gorkon02-22-05, 06:55 PM | Funny thing is, UA also offers a system to "pay off" a level adjustment if you choose such a race. Simply because many abilities you get with a LA+ race are fine at the beginning, but rather worthless if your charachter grows up. And that is also the main problem of bloodlines: Most of the abilities aren't worth the loss of a full level (BAB, HD, Saves, ...) on the long run. There are some exceptions, like character level dependant abilities (spell resistance 10 + clvl), but well...thery're the eyceptions. :/ You may end up with a character who is three effective levels behind the rest of the party. So, bloodlines could be interesting if you combine them with the said "pay off" rule. Or, as a DM, you could give a player who rolled bad stats a free minor bloodline as compensation. Or give every player a minor one for roleplaying purposes and the weaker ones a medium. And so on. BL can be an interesting addition to your game, but not as written. (Just my 2 cents ;) ) |
