As a new DM, I'm always wondering which books would be useful to have in order to add more flavor to my games. So far I'm still going with the "only use the core rules" in order to make sure I'm really familiar with the basics before jumping on supplements, though I do use some supplements for flavor.

What I already own:
- the 3 core books
- DMGII
- Dragonomicon
- Races of Stone
- Races of Destiny
- Races of the Wild

Now my question: So far I've been under the impression that the Complete series was more aimed toward the players and less the DM and that the Race series was aimed at both. When I am ready to "grow" out of the core classes/races, should I go toward the Complete series?

Abso-freaking-lutely.

The complete series has MANY classes that are WONDERFUL to throw at your PCs for a good challenge.

Frenzied Berserker and Justiciar are two of my favorites, and they always make it fun for my Players.

The Complete books are as much a resource for the DM as it is for the PCs. New base classes, PrCs, feats, spells, organizations, loot, etc... all this is just as handy to the DM. :)

Beyond the core books, XPH, and PH2... I'd highly recommend the Complete books as an excellent way to expand your options. The Complete books are all solid buys (other than possibly the Complete Psionic, which is easily considered the weakest of the Complete books).

If you're interested in adding flavor to your campaign, you should seriously consider getting a campaign setting. Nothing adds flavor like an entire detailed world for the campaign to be set in and maybe a few setting-specific mechanics. Of course, some people are insistent on building their own settings from scratch, but I find it takes an exhausting amount of work to equal what you can get from one book.

Other than that, I'm a big fan of Libris Mortis and Lords of Madness, and I expect Fiendish Codex I is of similar quality. These books are basically the Draconomicon for undead, abberations, and CE Outsiders, respectively, which should give you an idea of how useful they'd be to you.
