Anyone know where I might find a collection of lairs for standard monsters? In 2nd edition, there was a TSR publication called the Book of Lairs which detailed around twenty encounter locations in a couple of pages each. Basically, it was designed to allow a DM to drop these short encounters into a campaign when needed.

What I have in mind are two or three pages (preferrably with a decent map) that would have the layout, stats and details of, for instance, an orc camp in the mountains, a lizardman village in a swamp, a goblin cave complex, etc. Nothing too exotic and nothing campaign-specific, just some handy bunches of low- to mid-level bad guys to use on the fly.

I'm wondering if there is anything like that available today, either as a download or as a 3rd party published product. I don't think WotC has done anything like this, since it would appeal only to the 20% of the market that are DMs, but maybe somebody else has?

Yes, you have book of challenges. I think its 3.0 though.

I've not seen anything billed as a book of generic lairs, but I know that most of Mongoose's Slayers Guides (http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/d20/series.php?qsSeries=10) have sample lairs for whatever the topic of the guide is.

In addition, Necromancer Games (http://www.necromancergames.com/products.html) has Demons and Devils, as well as Vampires and Liches. Both titles contain minilairs/adventures - though for higher level characters. The Demons and Devils one is quite nasty. Oh, and Necromancer Games always has great web enhancements for their products.

There might be some pdfs available, but that is not really my niche. Enworld (http://www.enworld.org/forums/news.php?) might help you, there.

And speaking of Enworld, check out these free maps from Phineas Crow - a prolific and gifted poster there:

Underdark (http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=101452) (ongoing)
Maps o' the week (http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=73423) (100 assorted maps for your perusal. Conveniently zipped for ease of downloading.)

Enjoy.

You can find something similar right here at the wizards.com: Vicious Venues (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/vv) (still active)

You'll also find Random Encounters (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/re) (retired)
