anyways i want my players to fight a ghost. i did a quick read of the monster manual at chapters, and i think i got a little messed up with how they work..

can a ghost actually attack and effect characters in the material world? is that the first set of bonuses to attack? and the second is if they where in the ethereal world?

i read somewhere about there being a 50% chance of a normal person attacking a ghost, and it missing, unless you have a magical weapon? this would be based on the fact that they have to materialize a bit to hit the material characters? but if you had a ghost touch, you would hit like normal.

and one last question does the ghost take a 50% chance of not hitting or not, and does it need to hit ac including armour or without?

thanks for your help

A ghost's physical attacks(with swords and axes and what not) can NOT affect a material creature, unless it is a ghost touch weapon. They have to use their special attacks. ghosts have several special attacks that only they can use.
Spells and similar attacks by ghosts work normally.

Any non-magical effects(normal weapons and the like) can do nothing to a ghost, nothing at all. Magical weapons suffer a %50 miss chance when ever attacking a ghost, unless it is a ghost touch weapon.
Ghosts suffer no such miss chance.

and ghosts' melee range special attacks require a melee touch attack.
have a look at each of the special attacks for details.

A ghost's touch attack can affect material characters when manifested, as per the ability of the same name.
