| mcnoo04-18-05, 08:21 AM | One of my PCs has decided he wants to get hold of one of those fancy cinematic knives concealed in the sole of a boot that springs out when he twists the heel against the ground. He's an evil rogue\swashbuckler, full of dirty tricks and I love the idea, but i'm not sure how to implement it. What sort of attack penalty should he get by attacking with his foot, and perhaps a bonus of some sort. (maybe applying his sneak attack to the first blow as it's a supprise weapon) |
| Carn Vandoril04-18-05, 08:36 AM | It is a cool idea, I agree! I like it when players take time and effort in creating their own flavor. How ever this is indeed tricky, it could backfire on you as a DM when you make it a 1d4 slashing/piercing x2 + 5d6 concealed weapon. concealed weapon: spot check? DC 30? feat: quick draw. if not: draw weapon, spot DC/ listen: DC20? damage: 1d2? 1d4? I would go for 1d2. type: slashing or piercing? sneakattack: what vital spot could he hit? maybe something like cripling strike instead? or max +2d6. attack penalty: exotic weapon, off-hand(for beeing a foot), My guess is he wants it for poison use right? * poison use? apply dc: 25? * don't let dirt from adventuring in the woods cover the knifeslot. ;) * poison wears off? * high maintenance on the boot. |
| SearcherOmega04-18-05, 09:06 AM | I'd make it, mechanically, like the Spiked Gauntlet -- his kick strike is considered armed and does 1d4 piercing damage, 20x2 crit, weighing an extra pound. The obvious difference, however, is the ability to draw it quickly. I would just make it exotic and say 'this weapon gives you the effects of the Quick Draw feat, but only for the purposes of arming it'. The Sneak Attack would be the surprise round where he Quick Draws and kicks the enemy in the shin while they're flatfooted. The Spot DC to notice the space in the shoe where the blade protracts from should probably be around 20; certainly not much lower. It has to be an effective stealth weapon, after all. On the other hand, I imagine the Listen DC would be lower, as by the time you've heard it, it's already too late. :P |
| Dash Branaghan04-18-05, 09:13 AM | See the Blade Boot in the FRCS Exotic Weapons section. Same principle as what your player is looking for. Dash |
| mcnoo04-18-05, 10:21 AM | [QUOTE=Carn Vandoril] sneakattack: what vital spot could he hit?[QUOTE] Well, i can think os a spot or two a kick could reach that would be quite vicious indeed. |
| Conners_of_Sharptooth04-18-05, 10:35 AM | I found a description of a bladed boot in a non dnd d20 book. It says tiny simple weapon, 1d4 damage, crit 19-20 x2, 2 lbs, piercing damage, 20 gp cost. You can use the weapon finesse feat while using it and monks can use it for flurry of blows. Blade opens by presing down on a spring loaded heal. Price is for one boot. |
| MortalPlague04-18-05, 10:47 AM | Keep in mind that a weapon that grants a free 'sneak attack' damage is pretty potent. I'd opt for regular damage instead, myself. |
| mcnoo04-18-05, 10:50 AM | The guy's a pretty decent roleplayer, and as such his character is weaker than the more powergamed players, i reckon i can give the lad a free sneak attack per fight and not unbalance the party. |
| Conners_of_Sharptooth04-18-05, 11:07 AM | If you want to get technical abou it, then the rogue can sneak attack a target that is caught flat footed. If the rogue initiates combat (in this case by blade-foot and then kicking the guy) , then the target is considered flat footed and is subject to sneak attack damage. |
| Kalender04-18-05, 11:12 AM | If the guy is surprising anyone with the bladed-boot, he'll already get his sneak attack, 'cause of the surprise. If he is not surprising anyone, why would he get the sneak attack?? What I mean is: you don't really need any special rule for the weapon. At most, you can say that drawing the blade is a free action/counts as having the quick-draw feat and that it grants a bonus to bluff and disguise... and that's it. You don't need special rules as providing free sneak attacks, because if he is surprising anyone with it, he gets his sneak attack. If he is not surprising him, he should be denied the sneak attack. During a combat (especially to death) you'll often see opponents trying dirty tricks, throwing dust to the eyes and whatnot, and kicking someone/trying to sweep their feet instead of slashing with a sword is nothing that uncommon. Notice that you can sneak attack with bare hands/feet, and therefore, what is the difference (surprise-wise) between a regular kick vs a bladed-kick? that the blade hurts more and is lethal (1d4 lethal vs 1d3 subdual) and nothing else. If he really is not a power-gamer, he'll accept it and let it be. |
| Alynn04-18-05, 11:55 AM | Ok... its a great idea, and I'd allow it, if you could find someone to make it for you... or draw up plans yourself.... but anyway... since the blade would have to be smaller than a dagger I'd say it's 1d2-1d3 at most (plus str). I'd consider it an offhand weapon and proficincy needs to be taken to use it effectively. Free action to arm it, however it is a 2 round action to place is back in the boot, and the boot must be removed to put it back. You can try to place the blade back in the boot by wearing it, but you have a 25% chance of accidently cutting yourself while trying to place the blade back in. Also you can try to cut it down to a single round with 25% chance of hurting yourself, or a SA for a 50% chance of triggering the blade while resetting (stacks with the wearing chance). Using a stick to put the blade back in negates the chance of hurting yourself. Able to spot the blade while inside the boot would be a 30, with the blade out it becomes a 10. I'd add 10gp per boot to the cost. Other than that, its very nice. |
| Board_Rider04-18-05, 12:16 PM | See the Blade Boot in the FRCS Exotic Weapons section. Same principle as what your player is looking for. Dash Actually this is the best route to take, as the Blade Boot is an Exotic Weapon. Without proficiency (read: Taking a Feat) the the PC suffers from a -4 to hit because the weapon is unfamiliar. The damage is the same as a normal dager, as are all of the other properties. As a bonus these boots grant a +4 to Escape Artist checks. |

Honestly....I go to class for a few hours, and you steal my thunder. Guess I need to stop going to class, huh. All guff aside, the FRCS-depicted bladeboots are the way to go. BR is right. I'm a recent convert to these things because of the actions of one of my plaers in the FR campaign I run. At character creation, he was a ranger who wanted to get a set and spend a feat on them. An elven ranger no less, so he was a bit light on feats to begin with. I railed at him, but he stuck with his guns. Later on in the campaign, they were imprisoned and stripped of their possessions. Imagine my suprise when he said "Ok, I take my boot off and give it to the rogue so she can sneak attack the guard with it." That elven ranger is now the only character ever to hold the distinction of removing his boot and attempting to stab someone with it, ala Happy Gilmore. Later on in the dungeon, before they found their stuff, he was whirling all around, planting steel in the guts of unwary correctional guards. Yea....blade boots are pretty cool. |

I'll tell you what....nepotism, blatant string pulling, and favorites are being played. Actually, I get jack squat except the fun I have here and new ideas/rules insight gleaned from a lot of these posts. But to answer you, yes, a cheeselog counts as payment. |
| Board_Rider04-19-05, 12:13 AM | Does getting a dragon-shaped cheese log in the mail every Christmas count? Yes Fixxxer it does. At least for me anyways......I also get almonds. SMOKED almonds!!! WoTC approved Smoked almonds. Or it all could be from the guy across the way who always looks at me "funny" and pats my butt outside the football season. But I like to think its from this place. |
| Dash Branaghan04-19-05, 06:29 AM | Does getting a dragon-shaped cheese log in the mail every Christmas count? You get cheese? Lucky bugger...I get a log alright, but it certainly has no distinct shape, and if it was cheese, it's pretty rank when it arrives. Dash |
| Fixxxer04-20-05, 12:26 AM | Yours is dragon shaped? Well, the Christmas log is. You should see the anatomically correct succubus I get every year on Gygax's birthday! | Draco Strang04-21-05, 02:19 PM | What was this thread about? That sort of question will land you in a whole heap of trouble, buddy. Why don't you just stop being so nosy? And for the record, Board Rider never did ask if I was 21....... ........ ........ ........ ........ ........ While we were discussing firearms purchase laws. |
| Szat04-21-05, 06:10 PM | Draco - You suffer from being 19 too? Stupid hormones. Board Rider - Yeah Yeah.............firearms.......you know.....guns. :mymy: Additionally, what WASN'T this thread about. That's what you should ask yourself. :thinks: |

But....I play a multitude of fantasy games, and make no bones about hiding the fact. It's kinda like shooting yourself in the foot as far as hot girls at college are concerned. Thankfully, I don't talk about it with non-gamers, and when I bring them back to my room, all my fantasy stuff is hidden in my storage cabinets. So I manage to keep up the illusion of cool kinda well. Note I said illusion. |

Sadly, the WoTC boards are a dead magic area. So that spell would have never went off. On a side note that statement, after re-reading it, made me, apparently, the king of geekdom. But it's because they're all 2 years old, and seem to be intrigued by those pretty little colored objects we call dice. It's a full-time job keeping all that stuff off of the floor so they don't choke themselves. And to keep the Mods at bay: Dagger Boots can be made to be Masterwork, or better. Brilliant. BoardRider, you are the savior of many a thread. And to keep the ball rolling: "The stats for a Boot Blade can be found on page 97 of the FRCS.' There, I did it.....I said something on-topic. |

| Dash Branaghan04-23-05, 09:52 AM | Actually it's screaming because Dodge is inept at building a quality, long-lasting drivetrain for minivans. :D Yeah but he works for Chrysler so we'd get a discount on replacing it when it falls apart. Besides, it could be worse...it could be an Aerostar. Dash |
| Draco Strang04-23-05, 10:39 AM | Besides, it could be worse...it could be an Aerostar. Dash Ouch....I hadn't considered that. May I steer you towards an Audi A6 Avant Quattro? All the mini-van convienence, but in a station wagon package, done much better, and with gobs of performance to boot. |
| Board_Rider04-23-05, 12:12 PM | The Audi is nice.... However may I reccomend: The U-Haul Truck Seriously. You can thrash it around, blow out the AC, get commanding views of the road and 4 rear tires to blow out. Oh, and the back will fit up to 30 people (I know) comfortably who can party before getting to the GenCon party. Nothing screams ghetto fabulous like rolling up in this box on wheels with you and 30 of your Friends as smoke bellows out of the back..... God how I miss my youth... |
| Dash Branaghan04-23-05, 12:27 PM | BR, you might be onto something... I can get the tools to bolt a table down into the cargo area, drill breathing holes for those of us in the back...use boat tables for those funky edges that won't let our dice fly off the table... And when we get to the GenCon, we can have a tailgate campaign, complete with steaming bowls of dwarven stew and orc chili... Dash |
| Fixxxer04-23-05, 03:32 PM | I've actually been considering making my next vehicle purchase a minivan, just so I have a spacious interior for trips to DragonCon (and lots of cargo room for the return trip). The problem with this is that my two choices right now are very opposing...minivan vs motorcycle. Minivan - I look like an old dude with kids and I don't get the power I dream of. Motorcycle - I get arrested for the heinous crime of "Driving With A Halberd." |
| Draco Strang04-23-05, 03:48 PM | The Audi is nice.... However may I reccomend: The U-Haul Truck Seriously. Let me list my concerns: Is there enough light? Is seating even an option, or is rolling around with the contours of the road to be expected? How do you keep your bee....er..........Coca-Cola from getting all frothy and spilling? In a U-Haul, I can only imagine the party fouls that are committed Are we going to worry about legality? I don't want to...just wondering if the rest of ya were. Where do I sign up? Fixxxer, How is it even an option? I suppose it depends what kind of minivan/motorcylcle you are considering, but still. Do you even have kids? If they're little, you can fit them on the back, and squeeze your wife into one of those nifty sidecars. Is there another car in your stable at home? If so, then it's time for a toy, baby! Do you really wanna wash and wax a minivan? Nope...because hot girls in fringe vests don't care about Ford Aerostars and Chrysler Town&Country owners. What they want is a real man...one who can handle 1200 cc's of raw, unbridled power. Now, who do you want to be? P.S.- The Audi isn't a nice suggestion, it's the best suggestion. I've been schlepped around in, fixing, driving, buying, selling, and swearing at Audis for 19 years. Hell, I've even got the damn logo tattooed across my shoulder blades. Don't think I'm kidding, either. |
| Dash Branaghan04-23-05, 04:11 PM | Hell, I've even got the damn logo tattooed across my shoulder blades. You know, not only is their surgery for that, but there is help in other forms as well. :D Dash, the Dodge Truck Dude PS: Fixxxer...it's all about the minivan...those things attract soccer mom's better than chocolate Hagendaas. |
| Draco Strang04-23-05, 04:19 PM | You know, not only is their surgery for that, but there is help in other forms as well. :D Eh, I don't need help. I just need more raw, unbridled horsepower surging through my 87' Audi 4000 Quattro CS. That's what I need. In addition to more power for my Audi 90, and my dad's 83 Audi Quattro Turbo Sport, and My mom's 98 Audi A4 We have a lot of cars. Don't get me started on what else is in our garage(s). The tattoo was half on a dare, and half because I really love Audis. I've had it for a while, and have yet to regret it once. |
| Szat04-23-05, 07:11 PM | Dash, I think you're on to something here. Also, yeah I hadn't noticed, we ARE neighbours. Well I say let's do it. Let's go crash Fixxxer's GenCon!!!! Everyone to the U-Haul!!!!!!!!! |
| Draco Strang04-23-05, 09:47 PM | We are soooooo going to GenCon. Where is it, in MI? |
| Szat04-23-05, 10:22 PM | I'm relying on you guys to provide that information. |
| Fixxxer04-24-05, 02:39 AM | PS: Fixxxer...it's all about the minivan...those things attract soccer mom's better than chocolate Hagendaas. True, but if I get the bike, I can always use "Hey, baby...wanna feel some real power between your legs?" as a pick up line. ...yeah, I know that'll never work, but it's too good a reaction not to want to see. :D |

I suggest Triumphs, as it's all I'll ever ride. Looking for something with style? Get a Bonneville or an America. Want raw, vibrating horsepower that rivals Harley? You''ll be needing a Thruxton or Rocket. Feeling like one of the Biker Boyz*? Daytona 955i or that hot, hot Sprint RS. Come on Fixxxer....you need one. *Biker Boyz sucked. |
| Fixxxer04-24-05, 04:37 PM | So, what kinda bike? Well, I know I'll invest in a broken minivan with flat tires before I'll be caught dead on some little plastic crotch rocket, so there will be no racing-style bikes in my future. I've been looking at a Honda, since my work is right next to the Honda dealer. One of my old friends who was all about harleys used to say...umm...actually, I think I'll put this is spoiler tags so as not to offend anyone... Riding a Honda is a lot like having sex with a fat girl. It's just as smooth of a ride, but you don't want to let any of your friends catch you doing it. :D |

However, Honda does make a quality, solid bike. I've seen guys get 300k on one with no major maintenance. Bulletproof, they are. As for Triumphs (which I heartily suggest, You'd probably dig the Bonneville. Classic styling, modern day performance. A modern incarnation of the most influential bikes ever. Why the hate for crotch rockets? Oh, don't get me wrong, I hate GXRs and Ninjas and Katanas, but a well styled Triumph Daytona that can destroy everything that Japan has to offer? P.S. Stay away from BMW bikes. They're expensive, parts are through the roof, and............ They're like ass holes...everyone's got one, and it's usually dirty. |

Oh, don't get me wrong, I hate GXRs and Ninjas and Katanas, but a well styled Triumph Daytona that can destroy everything that Japan has to offer? Mostly, it's a comfort thing. I've never felt comfortable seating a racer, all hunched over and whatnot. Being 6'2, I imagine that's pretty standard for guys my size. On top of that, I live in an Air Force town, where everyone and his brother saw Top Gun growing up and feels th need to own a damn Katana or Ninja. Odds are pretty good it's mott anyway. My wife found a local dealership that sells used BMWs (her choice of car) on the cheap. I figure we'll probably get her a beamer and I can finally have my jeep back. Bout time. |
| Fixxxer04-24-05, 05:09 PM | If you only knew....I was born with a spanner in diaper and grease under my finger nails. Heh, not so with me. I was just a poor teenager who constantly needed to rebuild vehicles to keep himself mobile. Shade-tree mechanic. :D |
| Dash Branaghan04-24-05, 05:10 PM | If you only knew....I was born with a spanner in diaper and grease under my finger nails. My dad tried that with me, but I found cooking with grease under my nails to be somewhat disruptive, so I stopped playing with cars. That and my step-mother was becoming seriously concerned about my language when I was helping my father work on his '56 Ford pickup. Dash |
| Dash Branaghan04-24-05, 05:11 PM | Btw, I figure a Katana or Ninja tire has a hardness of 2 and 5 hitpoints, so a critical hit from a boot dagger could burst it quite easily. In fact, I'd grant the BD a +4 for confirmation of the critical. :D Dash |
| Draco Strang04-24-05, 05:15 PM | Heh, not so with me. I was just a poor teenager who constantly needed to rebuild vehicles to keep himself mobile. Shade-tree mechanic. :D Oh, I've had to do some emergency by the road stuff before. And I actually was a shade tree mechanic once. Had to pull a motor out of a 66' Triumph Spitfire, and attached a come-along with some chain to a stout branch on a tree that overhung in a parking lot, pushed the car under it, swapped out an entire motor/gearbox, hustling to beat the rain. Looking for sockets in the grass sucks....I love my garages. That and my step-mother was becoming seriously concerned about my language when I was helping my father work on his '56 Ford pickup. Oh...I picked up all my swear words in the Boy Scouts, along with my vast repitoire of dirty jokes. Think I even learned to tie some knots. Oh, and lest I forget, Rogues can apply their SA damage while using Blade Boots. |

I can empathize. I once had to drop the wheel assembly on a Mitsubishi Galant so I could pull the sad excuse for a transmission out because the damn transfer case was mounted on top of the thing. All of this was done by myself, on the side of Interstate 10 with a bottle jack and one of those sorry "auto emergency tool kit" deals. It's a good thing I'm somewhat of a tolerant man, or I certainly would have attacked the car with a socket wrench, which would have dealt 1d4+2 damage (due to my STR). Sadly enough, it being an object, I wouldn't have gotten to add sneak attack damage. This has been your once-per-day on-topic portion of this discussion. |

Actually, I think the socket wrench, as an improvised weapon, would only deal 1d3. After all, it is a small (if not tiny) object. Do you actually credit yourself with a 14-15 str? Impressive...I lift and all, but I'm a wiry bugger, and thus am limited to 12/13. So sad.... |

I think that a socket wrench can be treated as a club for purposes of damage, especially if it's one of those 18" suckers. I'd hedge that I'm a 15/16 myself...*remembers being ****** off enough to move a skid of 18 27" TVs by dragging the bloody thing across a carpeted room* Dash |

If I had to guess, I'd actually say I'm more of a 12/13, but I rpobably possess a feat that gives me a bonus to this whenever I need to lift heavy objects and move them short distances. As an example, someone a few blocks down threw out a V-8 engine block. Rather, they left it by the road expecting the garbage guys to take it away (yeah, right). It still has the pistons and crank in it, though the cylander head and oil pan are missing. I'm about to take a little trip over there and lift that sucker into the back of my jeep (if nothing else, the local pick-and-pull will give me $75 for it). Should I be able to lift that sucker (probably 350+ pounds)? Not with a 12/13 STR. However, I'm willing to give myself a headache and possibly burst a bunch of blood vessels in my eyes to get it up and into my truck. Interesting feat, no? |
| Draco Strang04-24-05, 05:47 PM | I think that a socket wrench can be treated as a club for purposes of damage, especially if it's one of those 18" suckers. Dash Oh no...most socket wrenches are 10/12 inches, and would be improvised anyway. I've got a few of the bigass ones you're talking about (I heart SnapOn) and I have certainly felt the desire to whap someone with them, but I still think that they'd be an improvised weapon. So yes, the bigguns' will probably deal out 1d4, but I'm pretty sure Fixxxer was using a smaller one, and thus the need for a 1d3 damage die. |

Tell you what...let's get a group of us together and some anti-D&D naysayer, and we'll take turns with the wrenches. We'll figure this out scientifically. :D Dash |

He's gonna have a lot of catching up to do. |
| Dash Branaghan04-24-05, 06:16 PM | Ok, honestly we need to get back on topic. More about this U-Haul. We can do my experiment in the back of a U-Haul...might even muffle the yelps. :D Dash |

| Dash Branaghan04-24-05, 07:02 PM | What....are you looking to try this idea out on puppies and baby seals? You sick bastard you..... People yelp when you hit them hard enough. People also STOP yelping when you hit them hard enough. But you gotta figure the van, being a confined area, will add at least a +5 to the Listen DC, +7 if you stuff the moving blankets around the cracks, and +12 if you do all of that and have the van running. Dash |

| Board_Rider04-24-05, 08:15 PM | Where the hell is Board Rider when we need him? He's gonna have a lot of catching up to do. Ok I am back... Here is what you need to turn your Trip into a Fantastic Voyage. First rent the Super Mover (http://www.uhaul.com/guide/?equipment=truck26). Notice the 7ft. height.....plenty of "I need to stretch room" Head on over to your local flea market/Goodwill/Salvation Army and get a table. I would reccomend a low table. Make sure to edge the corners and sides with cardboard and tape to keep dice and whatnot from flying everywhere. Use Bean bags for chairs. The rollup door can be held open, I believe, up to 6 inches from closing so that will be your fresh air. Put a Black blanket on the door to ground and anchor it for privacy. Now I believe that in the Super Mover Uhaul has installed an electrical outlet for whatever reason so use that for a lamp. If not....find cheap electronical substitutes. I used a Coleman Lantern. A simple cooler and pit stops will keep everyone fed and hydrated. It ain't the Hilton but it will work. I like Audis too Draco. My dad is a "German Auto Specialist" mechanic who primarily wrenches on VWs and Mercedes as well as Porches. Audis, not so much...a damn find car...I like the A4 myself. Just pretty. Unfortunatley, I guess...I like "crotch rockets" and "rice burners". Give me a "Jinxer" (http://www.suzukicycles.com/Products/GSXR1000K5/Default.aspx) or a Yahmaha (http://www.yamaha-motor.com/products/unitinfo/2/mcy/5/6/0/yamaha_yzf-r1.aspx) anytime. Although I really am more of an off road guy...ATVs. Though its been a while. I am done. |
| Draco Strang04-24-05, 08:23 PM | Ok I am back... Here is what you need to turn your Trip into a Fantastic Voyage. "Your trip"? This is "our trip" man. I like Audis too Draco. My dad is a "German Auto Specialist" mechanic who primarily wrenches on VWs and Mercedes as well as Porches. Audis, not so much...a damn find car...I like the A4 myself. Just pretty. Oh man...the A4. My mom's got one that my dad and I took the liberty of "enhancing". She wonders why the clutch drives like a tractor now. So much torque we managed to stuff into it....my God. Of course, I would have one, but money is a factor. And I really can't bear to part with my 4000 that I've been fixing/modifying/getting speeding tickets in since I was 14. Unfortunatley, I guess...I like "crotch rockets" and "rice burners". Give me a "Jinxer" (http://www.suzukicycles.com/Products/GSXR1000K5/Default.aspx) or a Yahmaha (http://www.yamaha-motor.com/products/unitinfo/2/mcy/5/6/0/yamaha_yzf-r1.aspx) anytime. Bah, you need to get on a Triumph Daytona 955i or that Sprint RS I was talking about. I've neither of those...just a few older Triumphs. Bonnevilles and Tigers mostly. Nortons, BSAs, and Velocettes too. That's why I'm poor....I keep throwing good money after bad. I am done. To quote the Carpenters, "It's only just begun." |
| Board_Rider04-24-05, 08:28 PM | "Your trip"? This is "our trip" man. Yeah, and just like the Coolio video..I can only dream. I thought you gamed on this day of rest. |
| Draco Strang04-24-05, 08:39 PM | Yeah, and just like the Coolio video..I can only dream. I thought you gamed on this day of rest. Dude, brighten up. I'll fly out to Southern California, we rent a U-Haul, meet everyone at GenCon, and do our thing. I have matching Stetsons that a buddy of mine stole from a going out of business Western store. It'll be fun. And I do game on this day of rest, but today is the exception. I run my FR game every Saturday, and the guy doing Eberron/Whitewolf needed a day to study for his monster Physics test. Don't sound so depressed, or Fixxxer, Dash, and myself will take corrective measures. |
| ShiverTheBard04-24-05, 08:54 PM | It's all about the minivan...those things attract soccer mom's better than chocolate Hagendaas. Sigged. Brutally. Dang you people and your conventions. I could never go out to California though, being a Republican, I would be shot....... ummm beaten......... no ummmm........ verbally assaulted on sight. |

| Szat04-25-05, 01:29 AM | Dash, I'm pretty sure we should just ignore your "experiments". Draco, I agree, are we actually thinking about GenCon? Because in actuality that'd be really cool.............or is it just me? |
