I am confused by the mechanics for drug use in The Book of Vile Darkness. Can someone break down the system in laymen's terms ? The book is kind of confusing with all of those different DCs and such.

Drugs are like poisons. They have an initial effect and a secondary effect, each of which you can resist with a fort save. If you try to resist, you have to try to resist both, as most drugs have one beneficial effect and one detrimental effect. A day after taking the drug, you have to make a fort save based on its addiction rating or become addicted. If you become addicted, you have to make a fort save every day you don't take the drug or take the indicated ability score damage. Make the save 3 times in a row, and you break the addiction. After taking a drug for a month, the drug jumps up one rating.

Make sense?
