This weekend I went over to a friend's place for a barbecue. When I arrived I discovered that all seven players from my current campaign were there... and that it was a DM appreciation party! I even got a gift certificate for the local game shop. I just feel a warm and fuzzy and wanted to share. :)

Actually... I wonder what kickass games you make...
I bet all they did for you was something you were warranted...
Or you import large quantities of Beer for your games, that works too.

Yeah, that's awesome. The only time something like that happened for me was the last time I was here in 1997. My players got together and conspired with my wife who said she was taking me out of town for a "romantic weekend." When we got to the hotel in Myrtle Beach all my players were there and they informed me we were going to Medieval Times (dinner and a show!). It was a fun weekend. We all got drunk and were running up and down the aisle encouraging our section to cheer (they encourage that sort of thing). Our knight even won (I think who wins is based on which section cheers the loudest/is the most obnoxious).
:ayyyy!:

When 3.5 came out, my friend and I gave our DM a complete set of the new 3.5 books.

My players have got to be one of the worst when it come to rules-mongering, munchinism, XP/GP greed, and plot-hook avoiding. I have never compromised and insist that a certain amount of realism exists, regardless of what the book says. I don't allow rampant PrC-dipping. I require RP in order to to even qualify for PrCs. I refuse to allow splat-crap just because it sounds cool. If it doesn't belong in my world, it doesn't exist in my world.

Recently, we decided to play a few extra games on Saturdays before our weekly vampire larp. The second week of this, they decided they had no intention of going to larp and want the D&D to continue.

Last night, they all thanked me for an awsome game, even thouigh the last two hours had been spent arguing ove what to do about a pair of intelligent weapons that clearly had opposed agendas and were trying to use the PCs to continue a war no one knows even happened.

The fact that they appreciate it makes it worth dealing such pain-in-the asses... er... I mean players. ;)

My GOD! I wish my players would give me something like this. Of course they wont because I kind of dont DESERVE it. *grumble*

Anyway, AWESOME.

Unfortunately for me (compared to you, with your fansy DM Party), all I get is the respect from my PC's, and, hopefully, the truth when I ask them about the plot/characters/how I DM..... DM's are people too!

Now you should return the favor by using that gc to buy a game book full of evil and devious ways to kill their characters. It's only fair. :schemes:

That's awesome.

The reward I get from my players is that they retell old D&D stories. And they tell me how much they enjoyed the old campaign.

This new group? Well, the reward I get from them is their continued appearance on game night, which means they must be enjoying it.

That rocks.

One Christmas, my wife got all the players together and they got me a pretty expensive case for my ever-expanding collection of miniatures.

That was nice.

But mostly I just get whining.

Yes, it is nice when they remember the work you did, fondly. My group is full of smart-asses, though, who like to remind everybody of the times things went wrong, too.

You have to have a sense of humor about that stuff.

That's probably the coolest thing I have read on this board. :)
I feel lucky if I get the same things that Phrennzy get's, attentive players and the retelling of old stories. Whatever you happen to be doing, keep it up!

& I'll bet you freak-out & worry over your campaigns;"am I doing this right? Will they like it? Did they notice when I threw this in?". Am I correct? Enjoy your laurels!

You're truly blessed.

The only thing my Players have ever given me to show their how much they like my game is more Players.

Started this campaign at 4, now I'm up to 10.

No-one really likes D&D in my area so I'm playing with 1 guy who actually likes D&D, a serious FF-fan min/maxer and his mum who doesn't care at all :S

Keep doing what your doing, that's all I can say.

Was that really necessary? :P

Of course it is.

Can I join?

Oops, I didn't mean that. What I meant to say was...

Can I watch? :D

No wait, I didn't mean that. What I meant to say was...

Oh, nevermind.

Congratulations!

Can I join? He's kinda picky about things like that...unless you're a hot chick.

Can I watch? :D I'm kinda picky about things like that...unless you're a hot chick paying $9.95/minute.

Congratulations! He seems happy with the arrangement. The group likes getting answers to the insane riddles he throws at us. (DM's very prone to bribery. Especially of the food and drink kind, but he'll take all. I still remember him handing 500 xp to whoever thwacked a player who had just said something utterly retarded.)

Make sure they get extra XP if they did the "thwacking" with a +5 Hammer of Shut the Hell Up!

Actually, the player leaned over to the end of the couch and slapped him (lightly) on the shoulder. It was amusing.

Speaking of violence, whenever he gets real frustrated with someone's actions, his new favourite phrase is "contemplating felonious assault with the DMG". I think that for some of our past problem players, he would've actually done it...except the books are too expensive. (Don't live in the US, so pay hella tax. Amazon.com is your friend. :))

Generally, our group shows appreciation by bringing goodies, munchies, booze, and gushing about how much they enjoyed the session. They also do the "remember when...???" bit. I think TPK may need a big DM appreciation thing soon though. He's been feeling a bit down about his DMing skills lately. (Although last session went awesome! )
