In their first dungeon, I dropped a little piece of gear for my players. It's a cloak that conceals alignment, except it doesn't actually work. An identify spell will tell you that's what the cloak does, but it's actually useless.

My player's just hit level 8 in the Shackled City, and one player, armed with the cloak, feeling invulnerable from the fallout of playing an evil character, has been tempted by the dark side. Now he's murdering people and torturing confessions out of folks, etc, thinking no one will be able to figure out what he's up to.

The whole reason he wanted to be evil was because he didn't want to be constrained by pesky morals that prevented him from killing NPC's because they "seemed a little suspicious" or plotting assassinations of key NPC's while they sleep.

I'd like some advice. How should I make his life difficult?

I don;t know what part of the Shackled City adventure you're at right now but there are a few NPCs that may cause him trouble down the road. I can't remember her name (starts with a "J"), but the main ally-type priestess could turn against him and begin investigating the party. She's one of the few allies the party had when I used that same adventure, so taking that away rom them would defineatly be believable and throw a wrench in their gears big time.

Also, the group I ran through that adventure ended up saving Alec Tercival's life, which allowed me to use him as an NPC later on (one of the PCs ended up marrying him years down the road, in fact). His renewed faith after being saved from the hags' enchantment would certainly be at odds with this characters outlook, and you could use him as a recurring foil against that character at various points. Since Alec plays no real role in the adventure after his death, it frees you up to use him as you see fit without messing with the main body of the adventure. Every evil PC should have anemesis...it makes life interesting for them.

I specialize in fluff, so I can't give you any ways to mess with him rules-wise...sorry. LOL. Thanks for reminding me of Cauldron though (which is called Vihnosh in my setting). It's probably time to set another adventure there.

Barring Paladins hunting him down, try to use the Bloodhound PrC on an NPC, they are really good at hunitng people down.

Actually they just started the mission where they are looking for Tercival!

Wow, that's really good advice, thanks.

Don't the other PCs have a problem with this character's actions?

Probably not as long as they are getting their XP.

Well, bloodhound is a prestiege class, so you could send paladin/bloodhounds after him!:P
