| Luminous Crayon11-01-03, 09:45 PM | In an upcoming campaign I'll be running soon, my PCs will be exploring an uncharted continent. A local spellcaster's divinations have revealed that-- theoretically-- there should be a largish land mass in thesea, beyond the borders of civilizations extant maps. The PCs have undertaken the mission of exploration for various reasons: thrill of adventure and possible discovery of riches among them. They have no knowledge of the island besides its general coordinates. Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of the island besides its general coordinates, either. (Okay, I lied, I have a few ideas, but I don't want to bias your brainstorming.) What's on the continent? |
| Bluebrush11-01-03, 09:51 PM | Catgirls. Catgirl ninjas. Catgirl ninjas who wield spiked chains. Now we've dealt with the essentials of world building, how about some info on the climate? Local nation's culture and history? Maybe there's some ancient ruins which are linked to the moden nation the PCs are from? |
| krichaiushii11-01-03, 10:18 PM | An empire of civilized, very advanced, LG versions of your campaigns most hated, savage humanoids - or orcs for a default. A blasted land, ala Dark Sun, where magic works very differently, indeed. A 3.x version of S3: Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, complete with frogemoths and vegepygmies. And laser guns... yeah... A place where magic has been forgotten - as the gods have been forsaken, and the new gods of technology have taken over - see Neil Gaiman's book American Gods for further details. The strange world of Oriental Adventures, where there are bound to be ninjas! Ninjas with ultimate power - whose sole purpose is to flip out and kill people! That would be soooo cool! Sorry. Its been a long day. |

Climate/culture/history of the uncharted continent, or of the civilized land from which the PCs hail? I assume you're talking about the former. Frankly, I haven't decided yet. I don't even know whether there will be a "current" civilization at all, or whether the continent will feature long-deserted ruins, or be totally pristine, untouched by the shaping hand of sentient life. All I know right now is that the PCs are probably (probably) going to be starting at about 3rd level. When they get to the island, they may find haunted ruins, bizzare weather phenomena, a clan of kobolds enslaved by a black dragon, xenophobic druid hermits, the magic-radiation-saturated battleground of two ancient, warring magi, or just about anything else imaginable. Right now I'm just looking for brainstorming ideas. Gimme your best shot. |
| Tanuki, the Bewildered11-01-03, 10:39 PM | My world has 2 uncharted continents, both populated with creatures from MMII. One is mostly desert, with Thri'Kreen and Sandmaskers living mostly in peace. The other is mountains and forrests, populated with Braxat and Desmodu, who are at war. |
| Endarire11-01-03, 10:43 PM | Atlantis, but modified. A group decided to exile themselves from the rest of the world and wants to keep it that way. Make them hostile or genocidal toward outsiders upon arrival or if they try leaving. -EE |

I assume you're talking about the former. Actually, I meant the latter. I was thinking that maybe sometime in the past the homeland of the PCs could have been part of a large empire which stretched to the uncharted continent. Now, years on, the common origin of civilisation on each continent has produced two very different results. Maybe one is a nice Chaotic Good land full of cheerful elves, pictureseque landscapes and fluffy Kittens, while the other is a Lawful evil society ruled by cold hearted Dwarves, with spoiled industrial skylines and evil awakened kittens who are not fluffy ad wield spiked chains. One world almost twisted parody of the other. It's 4AM. I'll sleep on it and throw whatever I come up with at you tomorrow. |
| Northen_Spur11-01-03, 10:59 PM | How about tribes of nomadic lizardmen, who keep moving through the jungles on lizard like pack animals. Once they meet their first humans, they are polite but cautious. Giving aid and a place to sleep to the adventurers. The Pc's learn the Nomad lizardmen used to live in a big city, with a proud religious culture. But one night, the god of the dead and fire came down on their proud city and the few who escaped haved been forced to live a nomad way of life. Since the God of the dead and fire makes nightly hunts forcing the lizardmen to sleep at a diferent place each night. The Pc's should quickly figure there is huge amounts of gold in the abandoned city. To the lizaedmen gold is a mear shiny trinket. |
| I forgot.11-01-03, 11:17 PM | Here's a simple one: no humans. All of the other races are living in accordance to their natural dynamics. Elves have giant forest cities and magic way beyond what humans can attain. Dwarves live in Moria-like Halls, but under constant attack. Halflings are gypsies; Gnomes are hidden. Vast tracts of land lay untouched. The world is way out of balance along the good-evil axis, as a place is either clearly good or clearly evil. No giant human cities...what does that do to magic? Farming? Commerce? War? Um, kittens? |
| Generality11-02-03, 12:19 AM | I would go with something completely different than normal, for the sake of interest. Different kinds of animals and plants than the PCs have ever seen begore, as well as different races that they've never encountered. Of course, this means a lot of work on your part. |

Loopy, if they wear tee-shirts, they are not naked anymore... I have been toying for some time with a Roman Empire civilization... an Orc Roman Empier. And you don¡t even ahve to make the empire LG, LN works perfectly. Of ocursl, you need tribes of barbarian humans living on the fringes of the empire and terroicing peaceful villages with their savage raids. "Tribune Gruumgashius, there is another human horde coming south" "Let's send some adventurers to stop them!" Exactly where the naked catgil ninjas go here I am not sure, but we can always find them an island or something... |
| I forgot.11-02-03, 04:10 AM | Of course, that would be on the very borders of the Empire, like Gaul, or the Persian territories. If its the persian territories, they can be Persian Ca--- Nevermind. Let's stick with the Orcish Romans. Though, wouldn't hobgoblins be better, since they're lawful? |
| Bluebrush11-02-03, 07:43 AM | Originally posted by RatoncitoGris Er... Loopy, if they wear tee-shirts, they are not naked anymore... T-Shirt of Nakedness Visually, this T-shirt is invisible to all viewers but provides resistance to mild cold as a normal T-shirt would. It is favoured by mountain bikini barbarians, scantily clad sorceresses in need of support, and the famous catgirl ninja clan of the naked chain. | Whaledawg11-02-03, 08:23 AM | Oh, I beleive your talking about the lost continent of Be'Delgato 2 thousand years ago the mighty human magocracy that ruled most of the lost continent was destoyed in one night when their magicaly created slaves overthrew them. After the Night of Just Fire, much changed and much stayed the same. But you must begin at the begining, and so I shall. Before the humans of Be'Delgato were ruled by mages, they were a theocracy. Unfourtunatly, the corrupt leaders of their church feared the power of arcane magic, the only source of power that they could not control. So slowly, carefully they put forth their anti-magic agenda and turned the ppl against the mages. They knew that with the ppl, the mages would have no choice but to bow to their wishes and stop the practice of magic. But mages are not so easily defeated. They knew that they could not win the subtle battle for the ppls hearts and that their magic alone could not win a war against the ruling church, so they set out to build a secret army. They used their mighty magics, their knowledge of life and the universe, and they began making the Majadem, a race of lizard like humanoids to serve the mages. Majadem come in many sizes, shapes and colors. This determines their role in society. The mages made many fearce warriors, unfetered by mamilian emotions. They also bred many magicly inclined Majadem to help them in their casting and preperations. Then they made their mistake, they created the first Helcion. The Helcion was supposed to turn the tide of battle in favor of the mages, they were designed to have access to clerical powers like their adversaries. They also had the added, unplaned effect that the other Majadem veiwed them in awe. They fought for the Majadem unfailingly and served them unto their own death. The Helcion did their job well. For 700 years after the mages took control things in the human kingdom were almost idealic. In order to mollify the ppl after the civil war, and to help break the power of the church even further, the mages made many new spawning pools to breed more Majadem to serve everyone. With such a numerous and docile slave race at their command the humans of the land almost needed to do no work at all. Until the Helcion lead the uprising on The Night of Just Fire. The original brood of Helcion had never died, they simply grew more powerful with age. With their spells and their mighty warriors at their command they rose up and slaughtered almost every human. Of the millions all across the continent less than 1,000 survived that night. Since then, the Majadem have lived in the ruined cities of the humans. Carrying out the wishes of the Helcion as they plot strange plots and plan wars with the other peoples of Be'Delgato. The Elves: The elves have lost their homes in the southern forests but their norther kindoms still hold strong. The long winters make it an inhospitable environment for the Majadem, for now. The Half-Elves: A large portion of the humans who escaped on The Night of Just Fire sought refuge in southern elvish kingdoms. There they joined with like minded elves and stated a gurilla war against the Majadem. As the elvish kingdoms in the south fell more elves joined their numbers but it became increasingly difficult to venture into Majadem territory. They finaly decided to take refuge on the Eye of Gaia, a large and high plateu in the southern plains, and build a new city and life for themselves there. The plateue is very defensable and rather cold due to its altitude. The population is about 10% elf, 15% human and 75% half elf. The Dwarves: The dwarves live much as they allways have. They no longer have the humans to trade with but the Majadem have no neither the desire nor the ability to drive the dwarves from their mountain kingdoms. The Barbarians: In the northern wastes have allways lived human barbarians. They are still there, as the Majadem cannot bear such cold. They take great fleets into the Majadem territory now in the summer and raid the coast. The Majadem: The dominant culture on the planet, they are actualy many races united under the Helcion Helcion: Born about the size of a mans hand, the helcion are the spiritual leaders of the Majadem. They are immortal(under natural circumstances) and never stop growing. They are born a bright green and become more and more yellow as they age. The original Helcion are now well over a ton and command vast magic. They are mystics if you have the rules from DLCS, otherwise treat them as clerics of an abstract idea. Shenz: Small, froglike creatures with a dark back and lighter blue underbelly the shenz were created to be spellcasters. They helped the mages prepare their large spells and experiments and now they help the Helcion fight the enemies of the Majadem. Their favored class is sorceror. Majado: The original race created by the mages, the Majado are fierce warriors. They serve unquestioningly and know no fear. They are the fodder of the Majadem and bred in large numbers only when the Helcion are planning a large campaign that will thin them out quickly. Their favored class is warrior. Bel: The greatest warriors magic can produce, these lizard men stand about 7 ft and weigh around 350 lbs. They are loyal, disciplined and much more intellegent then their Majado predicessors. They still lack initiive without a Helcion or Shenz commanding them, but they are fully capable of carrying out orders on their own. Their favored class is fighter. etc. You get the idea. There could be ranger lizardmen, rouges and all that fun stuff. This gives the PCs plenty of ancient cities to explore, natives to help against the Majadem and gives it a nice alien feel. And yes, I did steal most of the lizard man stuff from warhammer :P |
