Ok hi all.

I have this real sweet idea on how my prime material plane will look like. Basically, the prime material plane is an insanely huge flat surface (maybe infinite) just with vacuum. i havent decided what material the surface wil be yet but im leaning towards some kind of polished rock or metal.

on this insanely huge flat surface is a small circular puddle with some land mass on it, with a hemisphereical atmosphere. this area of water and land wil be roughly the area of half the planet earth. and have about 70% water and 30% land.
This is the "earth" as the players know it. (well atleast the world that exists).

The sun is in orbit around this place at an undecided distance. The sun is up 12 hours each day and sets and rises in what i have named "star holes" upon the large flat surface.

on the edges of this earth is not very easy to reach by natural means. there is a vast ocean that seperates the edge from the rest of the land masses. The edge is a somewhat symetrical beach made up of this flat surface material.
Beyond this beach you can see a vast wasteland that fades away into darkness. you cannot really travel into it either because the atmpsphere becomes unbreathable just a few kilometers out. it also becomes increasingly cold too.

Only the most wise and experienced denizens of this "earth" knows the fact that they reside upon a huge flat surface. they are also not to keen on discussing it as most people would call them mad or just wouldnt belive them. In any case it doesnt matter much because knowledge is a luxury most people of this earth cannot afford. And most people wouldnt be more happy if they knew the truth =P.

Anyways with these parameters set i need some more stuff added.

- I need some sort of moon, mostly because it would be too dark at night and.. well you just gotta have a moon! how the hell would a moon work in this universe?

- I need some sort of stars.. the sky would just feel empty without stars! but what the hell would these stars be?!

- I plan on including the existance of other "worlds" on this huge surface but im not sure about two things. 1. Would these worlds be WILDLY diffrent or somewhat similar in terms of geography and life? or a mix? 2. how far away would these other worlds be from the "main" world?

- I plan on including some form of special race called "wanderers". these do not need air to breathe nor are they affected by age. so they can walk the distance between the diffrent worlds. these are very rare and very reclusive. if they decide to show themselves they can bring very interesting stories and information.
I need to figure out how they look. will they be humanoid? large? small? very large? very small? do they have special mounts they ride on when they traverse the void?

anyways, im just throwing this out there so tell me your crazy ideas. i would be more than happy to hear them! =P

The moon would work similarly to the sun and would produce its own light, I would think (I think that's what they thought back in the day).

Also, What kind of pitfalls can you suspect this setting will have.

for example: how would you make teleports work if you were to travel on this plane?

Any other ablilities or spells that wouldnt fit this scenario?

You ever read "Ringworld" by Larry Niven? If not, you really should, it's a pretty similar description to what you have set up and should give you TONS of ideas on how to run that world you have. It takes a little while to actually get to the ringworld in the first book, but it's a great read and should help a lot with your players operating on that world and how the world might work ecology wise...

Damn, grapedog beat me to it. Ringworld definitely has some similarities to what you've described. If I recall, on the surface of the Ringworld (which was somewhere in the realm of 3 million times the surface of the Earth) were various full-size duplicates of planets.

If you're hurtin' for an explanation of certain things like day and night or atmospheres, the Ringworld concept might tie it up quite nicely.

One major pitfall though, is the chance that your players might say something dumb like "Hey! He copied Halo! Wha' happened?"
