LadyCreator 06-12-05, 10:21 PM	ONe of my players asked me this, I'm playing a druid and just hit lv three to my utter delight, as I can now cast Briar Web (Complete Divine 2nd lv spell). Unfortunately, upon reading the entry a bit more slowly I noticed that it was not exactly like Entangle but with a bite. Though they have almost exactly the same intro text as to their effect (Something along the lines of "Causes plants in the area to entangle people in the effected area") their effects have a slight difference in that Entangle atempts to re-entangle anyone in it's area of effect each round, whereas Briar Web does not specificaly note that it does. Asside from the smaller radius and damage effects of Briar Web that is just about the only difference between the spells. Personaly I think that it was intended to be a better entangle spell and that the plants atempt to entangle anyone in the area every round is fairly intuitive since it does have a durration and say specificaly that the plants will atempt to entangle anyone that ENTERS the area (as does Entangle) If it intended it to be a one-attempt thing where the plants get one shot to get a grip on the opponent I would think it would read "Durration: Instantaneous". As written it seems as though the plants are animate for the durration of the spell and would atempt to capture anyone who broke free but did not leave the area of the spell - what do you think? As I see the question, it's whether or not a creature that succeeds its initial Reflex save - but stays in the area of effect - will have to make more reflex saves to remain free? That is, does Briar Web keep trying or does it give up after the guy gets free once? I'm really not sure - the text for Entangle is pretty clear that it keeps trying to trap a person in the area of effect, but this is omitted from the description of Briar Web. The question is whether that omission was an oversight, or whether it is significant.
Cthulhu1138 06-13-05, 12:19 AM	Well, I think it would still require a saving throw each round, because just picture it. Ok, so Joe fighter gets hit with it and passes his save. He is not entangled, but he is in the middle of a huge patch of briars. Trying to do anything (walk, attack, drink a potion) would just get him wound up in the briars again, whether or not the briars are trying to get him intentionally
