Is it wrong for the PC's to craft a +1 brilliant energy ballista?

Or should I just arm my Iron Colossi with the Whirlwind Attack Feat and +1 brilliant energy whips?

One could argue (reasonably, I think) that since it is a mechanical object and not a standard weapon, the cost would be astronomical (making it a forbidding endeavor to the PCs).
On the other hand, ballistae take time to reload... And guess what the opposing force's first target is going to be when they learn of the thing's existence? Imagine what an enemy with the warp wood spell could do to an item like that?
Ah... A DM's fun never ends.

Stronghold Builder's Guide has rules for magic siege weapons. I believe they're the same as normal weapons as far as cost goes.

As for the Iron Colossi, that would be useless, as the weapon would be subject to their anti-magic field.

And no, it isn't wrong. I'd like to know how your PCs plan on moving, aiming, and firing the damn thing though, as well as what they intend to use it on.

Uh ... what, exactly, would be the POINT of a Brilliant Energy Ballista? Brilliant Energy weapons ignore nonliving material, and about all Ballistas are good for is castle sieges. Can you even target those things at a person?

IIRC you target a square, and if you hit that square then whatever is there takes the listed damage, AC of the person doesn't matter.

A better idea would be ballistas with the Explosive property

No, thats only for catapults. Ballistas have to hit the AC normally.
