So, a couple of weeks ago, my PCs killed another PC in the game. Now, I really want to bring back the just killed PC. I would say he would come back as a lich, with the help of a demon and yada yada yada... I'm just wondering if this would be okay? Should I ask the PC if I can use the character for later and make sure he's okay with it, or just go with it? I don't want to ruin the suspence, but I don't want the Player ticked at me either.

Why wouldn't it be? The PC is dead, but if you're bringing him back as an NPC, that is your choice.

That said, by the rules, if the PC doesn't want to come back, then he can refuse to come back, choosing to go to the afterlife. There might be a saving throw to refuse, depending on who/how/what is attempting to restore the character.

However, why not just bypass asking for permission and simply have your character be a clone of him? Or, barring that, simply appearing to be the character. The advantages of having access to the spirit can also explain why the NPC knows so much...and killing the PCs is just what BBEGs do.

I brought back a pc once and no one really had a problem with it. It adds some interesting role playing into a game. But if he is going to come back as a lich you really should flesh it out. Also if he was a good alin. character the it is highly unlikely he would come back as a lich.

He was LE, so no worries there.

Then that works out perfectly. If you talk to the pc it will just ruin the fun. You could almost make him out to be behind some bigger plot you have planned so months down the road when they finaly meet him they can be like. "Oh My God!"

I have been down this road a couple of times in the past. I have the dead character come back as a Revenant. A Revenant is a soul that is wrongly killed and has returned for the sake of revenge.
Like most things timing is a must. I wait about a month or so in real time to give the memory of their fallen "friend" a chance to fade and then unleash the Revenant. During the revenants travels he could of course come across like minded undead who think the party could do with a killing. Beefing the Revenant up a little bit to make it worth a challenge to the party is definitley within reason. After all, he's coming back to kill the party not tickle them.:D
If they took all of the gear from his corpse then he should have new stuff, prettier stuff and yes make it evilly curse stuff :evillaugh . This way if the revenant is defeated and the party goes to loot his corpse again then he will definitley have the last laugh :schemes:
In my games there are consequences for a players actions. This is the one area that as a DM you should never even blink at but rather put on the spiked glove and give the wayward player a good smash in the head (metaphorically speaking of course).

I would see nothing wrong with bringing back a PC. Besides, if the guy's party members turned on him, he'll probably think it's the funniest thing in the world when his fireball-slinging corpse starts raining unholy devastation on the guys that killed him.

See Heros of Horror for fun ways to mess with resurrections. My personal favorite is having someone elses soul be implanted in the body instead. (goodbye friend, hello serial killer out to kill all of you in your sleep while pretending to be your friend.)

i would let him know (out of courtesy), and the create undead spells helps here. it cant be refused, and makes them into spiffy undead.
im more surprised that the player is alright being killed  .

A little of track, but not by much . . .back in 2e the group ranger had a cohort/follower a lower-level fighter --

anyways the group got into a nasty scrum with a group of evil adventurers that they were constantly clashing with. Long story short, the villains began gaining the upper hand and the PC's had to flee the scene -- except that the cohort was being held and slowly bleeding out --the PC's abandoned him, which was a big deal because the Ranger had promised to look after him, --

PC's come back the next morning hoping to actually ambush the villains, they are gone but the cohort is brutally disfigured, dead, and haning from a tree -- the PC's were so driven with anger and frustration they just cut him down, but did not take the time to bury him . . . hello REVENANT!!!! He came back and completely unleashed hell on everyone, especcially the ranger -- I am not sure if there is a 3.5 Revenant, but it was pretty BA back in 2e

I'd simply ask if the player is planning on ever having that character raised. If the player wants to eventually (unlikely if it was a PK), then 86 the idea of lichifying him. If he doesn't, then consider the PC's corpse and soul fair game for whatever you plan to do.

Also, a LE PC would probably make a deal with a devil rather than a demon.

I really like this idea, but I don't have anything to contribute. Mind if I steal it at some later date?
