I want to set up a system in which certain characters can learn the stances and maneuvers of the classes from the Book of Nine Swords. For instance, give each class a certain number of disciplines to choose from and a number of stances and maneuvers based on level. I could come with a system and play-test it, but I'd like some help in deciding how much to give each class. Should I base the numbers off of HD-size? BAB? How many other abilities the class gets? Should it be a random number, like 1d6+3?

By the way, I'm not really interested in how "over-powered", "munchkin-ish", or "uber" you believe this is. Just looking for a way to balance it for each class.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, this is totally off the cuff, and I'm away from my book now, so take all of this with a huge grain of salt. :)

Some schools obviously lend themselves to certain character types. A good first consideration is to look at the requisite skill for each school - attach them to classes where that skill fits well especially since, when it's not already a class skill of the class, you'll probably want to make it a class skill.
Also consider, some low skill point classes, such as fighter, may need a skill point boost to make martial strikes from multiple schools a playable possibility.

Another possibility is to replace partial progression casting classes' (such as ranger, assassin, paladin) casting with ToB martial strike progression.

A couple caveats - mixing spellcasting and martial strikes into one class should be done very carefully. Look at JPM and RKV for a comparison. Also, some classes, like Swashbuckler and Fighter probably don't need to be changed too much to allow martial strikes and still be balanced. But adding Shadow Hand school to an otherwise unmodified rogue could easily be overpowering. slowing Sneak attack progression or some other modification to even things out may be required.

Mabye something like giving the fighter warblade progression of maneuvers with stone dragon and one other discipline?
Let's face it, fighters need the help.

Rogues could do some sort of trading in of SA dice or Special Options for shadow hand maneuvers.

Monks work well with setting sun.

I'd just say have options where players could trade in class features for maneuver progressions.
