| Chaoslords05-19-06, 03:38 PM | History, in my game (homebrew low magic) the gods have left, so all healing spells are gone, sort of, there is some healing spells, but there are all temporary, I've increase the effectiveness of the Healing skill. Also I let my player be a Druid that had the shapeshifting ability at 1st level, because that was the thing he want to focus his character around. Here's the problem. The Druid (4th level), through play, has discovered that magic doesn't work the the way he thought it did, so he does not wants to cast spells anymore and focus only on shapeshifting. He wants to modify the class to reflect this. I don't have the problem with this but I think his suggestion is way over powered. What's everyones opinion? This is what he has suggested, most of it must be taken out of some other publication, so you also know which, that would be helpful as well, my guess is The Quintessential Druid by Mongoose Publishing, but not sure because I don't have that book. This is my proposed ability list adjustment in accordance with giving up all magic. There is no number of shifts per day since this is all he does. 1st Medium or Small Wild Shape 2nd A Thousand Faces 3rd Wild Empathy 4th Beast Speech 5th Large Wild Shape 6th Hybrid Forms 7th Timeless Body 8th Tiny Wild Shape 9th Swarm Shape 10th Huge Wild Shape 11th Plant Shape 12th Regenerate 1 hp/ min 13th Hibernation 14th Regrow Limbs 15th Magical Beast Shapes of = hit dice to character lvl 16th Gargantuan Wild Shape 17th Large Magical Beast Shape = Hit dice to character lvl 18th Colossal Wild Shape 19th Huge Magical Beast shape = hit dice to character lvl 20th Dragon Form = Hit dice to character lvl Thanks for everyones input |

Are his saving throws, hps, or any other state changing (proficiencies, etc)? Hmm, the first 15 levels look pretty good, but what is Hybrid Form? Also, is he still going to be limited to the Extraordinary Attacks (and no Extraordinary Qualities) of each form? Make sure he understands this if so. If he is so limited, then Magical Beast and Dragon Forms will not be too overpowering, though you might want to check the MMII and such and make sure there are no unusual abilities possessed by such forms as Extraordinary Attacks. Allowing Special Qualities wouldn't be too powerful until he started getting Plant and Magical Beast Shapes: special qualities and/or supernatural abilities can open the door for regeneration and the like (along with many other potentially problematic things). Speaking of which, you might regret that 12th level regeneration abilities. It means that if an hour passes without combat then the Druid is pretty much fully healed. This depends on how often such things happen in a given day of combat. You probably have a pretty potent fighter-type here, with a good amount of sneaking ability to boot. However, without spells he will be doomed to a pretty horrible AC most of the time. Most animals only manage an AC of 14-16. Since he'll lose access to magical items in his forms that means he is kinda stuck with crappy AC. Wild armor could alleviate this and might even become a bit too high, if you allow it. That's armor that shifts with you, btw. Overall though I don't think it is too bad, just make sure he understands what he gets and what he will not get from shifting. -Drachasor PS. Just how did he think magic worked? |
| kelvinaw27305-19-06, 07:31 PM | Why not just let him take Master of Many Forms? It concentrates on his shapeshifting rather than magic. Plus there are humungous numbers of wildshape feats in the Complete Divine. I don't think you need to worry about building a new class for him, there is plenty else around. |
| RogerWilco05-20-06, 07:23 PM | I would also suggest the Master of Many Forms PrC, it's in Complete Adventurer. It's an exact match for this, maybe add some Nature's Warrior to it. |
