| someonelse81205-27-07, 02:28 PM | I'm double posting this in the monster area and the DMs area since its relevant to both. PEACH I’m designing an encounter in the spirit of Gulliver’s travels. I found some stats of tiny brownies online but I didn’t like them very much, so I created my own build. These are mostly based off the brownies from the movie willow, except that I gave them some spell like abilities. I took a look at the grig and the pixie and compared their spell like abilities to the druid spell list, then I choose a few things that I thought would fit the brownie, more for flavor than for actual combat usage. The first purpose of this post is that I would like some feedback on my brownie build. What should their CR and LA be? Right now I’m working on the assumption of a CR2 and LA4. The second purpose is a question of tactics and the mechanics of combat. The players handbook, page 149 says “25 diminutive creatures … can fit into a single (5ft) square.” According to the Monster Manual page 237 a swarm is considered a “single creature with a space of 10 feet” so logically a swarm of diminutive creatures that takes up 10 feet, or 4 5ft squares, should contain 100 diminutive creatures, yet the monster manual goes on to say that a swarm of non flying diminutive creatures is made up of 1,500. this would assume they are crawling all over each other, which they are not. So my question is, when there is a 10ft area full of little brownies pointing their little arrows at you are there 100 little arrows or 1,500 little arrows? it really does make a difference when each one individually attacks at +10 and deals 1 hit point each. I don’t want to have to roll that many attack rolls so I want to use swarm rules for them but I also don’t want to have 1,500 in a 10ft area. This is my work in progress so far… Brownie (Diminutive Fey) Ability modifiers –8 Str, +10 Dex, +2 Con, +2 Int, +2 Wis, +2 Cha, DR5/Slashing or Piercing – these little brownies can taking a licking and keep on ticking. feats Brownies get Dodge and mobility as racial bonus feats Skills – (6+int)x3 In addition to their size bonus brownies have a +5 to hide and move silently in the forest. Feats: Brownies get Dodge and mobility as racial bonus feats Lv1 feat - Weapon Focus Longbow, Languages: Sylvan, with their +1 Int modifier they learn to speak common. Technically they don’t apply for mob or swarm rules. this is the quick & dirty brownie swarm Description: Brownie Size/Type: (Diminutive Fey) Class / Levels Hit Dice: HD 0 Hit Points: How do you determine the hit points of a swarm? Initiative: Speed: 10ft, Armor Class: AC19 Base Attack: +0 Grapple - Attack: Masterwork Longbow with Sleep Arrows, 60ft Always hits and deals 1d4 Dmg per 5 brownies & will DC15 + dmg dealt or sleep (Cl 6th) Special Attacks: Sleep Arrows Special qualities DR5/Slashing or piercing, scent 10ft, Spell like abilities: at will; craft sleep arrows, continuous: endure elements, 1/day; entangle, calm animals, charm animals, detect animals or plants, good berry, pass without trace, Saves: F. 0 + 2 = 2 R. 2 + 5 = 7 W. 2 + 1 = 3 the encounter: The PCs go to investigate rumors that a local shop keeper has been acting strange, he just sits behind the counter and stares off into space. He wont sell anyone anything, in fact some young hooligans have cleared out his entire inventory, he didn’t say anything except “have a nice day”. The sign in the window (hanging 6 feet off the ground) says its open and the door is unlocked. When someone enters the shop, the shop keeper says in a very high pitched voice “hello sorry we are closed goodbye” upon interacting with him the PCs can take a DC15 sense motive to notice that something is going on here. his mouth hardly moved when he spoke, he eyes seem to be staring off into space and his voice seems unnaturally high, he also seems to be wearing makeup. Spot DC12 to see through the disguise, then a knowledge religion DC10 to recognize a zombie. The PCs can speak with the “shop keeper”, he has a very high pitched voice and he talks very fast. He seems to be neurotic and paranoid. he wants above all else for the PCs to leave, but he refuses to take any kind of physical action, in fact he hardly moves his mouth when he talks and never makes any kind of facial expression, just a blank stare. The brownies robbed some low level adventurers and got a map from them. the map told of an ancient wizards laboratory full of ancient treasures that was hidden under the dirt floor of the basement of this little shop. The brownies brought a cleric who could use a scroll to animate the shop keeper and command it to sit as a dummy to ward off anyone who would bother them. then one of the brownies was assigned to sit in the zombie's mouth to act as a guard. The rest of the brownies are in the basement excavating the floor to try to enter this ancient treasure trove. After the PCs deal with the brownies they can explore the dungeon. if anyone has comments or suggestions I would love to hear them. I realise I'm kind of reinventing a wheel that has been done many times before, I'm just trying to give it a distinct flavor and make an memorable and challenging encounter that will also be good for quite a few laughs (just picture the little 6 inch men from Willow, but chaotic neutral instead of chaotic good and with a few spell like abilities). |
| Murrdox05-27-07, 03:30 PM | I think you're on the right track, and I appreciate what you're doing, because I love "Willow" as well. Brownies are great! However, you left out an important detail of Brownie Tactics, which I attempted to throw in. Let me know what you think. :) You'll need to create stats for individual Brownies, who might be important NPCs or even PCs. Then, you'll basically want to create a separate creature for a Swarm of Brownies. I think you're right on the money with the individual Brownie stats. However, they need to have a Hit Die for advancement. Make it a D6, since that is the hit dice for all Fey. Thus, your average single Brownie would have a base hit points of 3. Give them a CON score of 10 or 11, same as a Pixie. For class skills, I'd give them identicle class skills to a Druid. For the Hit Dice for the Swarm, use D6, because they are Fey, and D6 is the Fey hit die type. I think giving a Swarm a range attack of 60 feet is too much. With those little bows, they need to get a lot closer, point blank range. Normally, swarms don't have ranged attacks, but giving this swarm a special ranged attack for their sleep arrows is a good idea. Description: Brownie Size/Type: (Diminutive Fey) Class / Levels Hit Dice: 5D6 (I think about 5 Hit Dice is about right for a Brownie Swarm, but feel free to increase it.) Hit Points: 15 Initiative: +5 Speed: 10ft Armor Class: AC19 Base Attack: +3 Grapple: +5 with Grappling Lines Attack: +3 Damage: Swarm 1D6 + Sleep Poison Special Attacks: Sleep Arrow (Ranged Attack 10' increment +8 (1D6 + Sleep Poison DC 15), Grappling Lines Special qualities DR5/Slashing or piercing, scent 10ft, Spell like abilities: at will; craft sleep arrows, continuous: endure elements, 1/day; entangle, calm animals, charm animals, detect animals or plants, good berry, pass without trace, Saves: F. 0 + 2 = 2 R. 2 + 5 = 7 W. 2 + 2 = 4 Abilities: Str 2 Dex: 20 Con: 11 Int: 14 Wis 14 Cha 12 CR 2 A Swarm of Brownies who occupy an opponent's square may use Grappling Lines to attempt to bind the opponent to the ground. When using Grappling Lines, the Swarm has a +5 to Grapple checks. When the Brownies attempt to use Grappling Lines, they may start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If the Grapple is successful, on the next turn, the Brownie swarm may make an additional Grapple check to Pin the opponent to the ground. If the pin is successful, the opponent is considered Entangled, and must succeed a Strength or Escape Artist check DC 20 to escape. |

| someonelse81206-02-07, 11:18 PM | I never did get an answer to this question: unless someone can give me better information I am going to go with 100 per swarm The players handbook, page 149 says “25 diminutive creatures … can fit into a single (5ft) square.” According to the Monster Manual page 237 a swarm is considered a “single creature with a space of 10 feet” so logically a swarm of diminutive creatures that takes up 10 feet, or 4 5ft squares, should contain 100 diminutive creatures, yet the monster manual goes on to say that a swarm of non flying diminutive creatures is made up of 1,500. this would assume they are crawling all over each other, which they are not. | someonelse81206-05-07, 06:06 PM | note: I use the Ptolus campaign setting by Monte Cook so some things here make reference to that city. Flavor of the Brownies The brownies described here are the most common type found mostly in temperate forests, in the tropical regions there are brownies with a darker skin color, to the far north there are polar brownies, they tend to have a bluish hue to their skin, there are also the deep brownies who live in the underdark, they have pale white skin. Aside from skin color and minor cultural differences they are all of the same race. There are urban brownies and forest brownies. The urban brownies live in Ptolus, they use pistols that can deal a d6 of damage and their rifles deal a d8. the forest brownies use longbows that only deal a d3. Brownies are naturally chaotic neutral, but they are very susceptible to peer pressure from other fey. Brownies living on their own in the wild tend toward savagery, they will waylay unsuspecting travelers through their forest and rob them blind, one such haul can last them for months. If the brownies come in contacts with fey or similarly powerful beings they are drawn to the power, whether good or evil. It is for this reason that you will often see brownies in the service of a great hero or a terrible villain, the neutral brownies keep to themselves so you wont see them unless they are robbing you. In the forest the brownies often coexist with other fey. They prefer to live in the branches of a Treant, if they cannot arrange that they will live inside a dead tree or carve out a home in the side of a cliff, the branches of real trees are nice but too dangerous. Brownies never build a home from scratch like humans do, they prefer to make a home out of existing spaces, whether the spaces are natural or constructed is of no concern to the brownies though. Individual brownies will make a home just about anywhere that is warm, dry and safe from predators. They prefer to be high up off the ground so they can keep an eye on things and be out of reach from land based predators. Brownies have a deadly fear of cats, the reason for this is because cats see brownies as walking cat toys. Among the brownies it is a status symbol of the highest caliber to show dominance over a cat, whether by having the beast as a familiar or animal companion or to wear a cat skin coat, some barbarians and rangers will even display stuffed cat heads in their homes. Cat meat is a delicacy among brownies, urban brownies often hunt stray cats for this very reason, and to be macho. Brownies hunt mice and rats for food and fur, they rarely make familiars or animal companions out of these animals though, as they are seen as filthy beasts, not even suited for riding. A rare few rangers and sorcerers among the brownies will make an animal friend of a rabbit, then they harness the animal and ride it like the wind, this is the brownie equivalent of a crotch rocket. Other animals commonly found as brownie familiars and animal companions are hawks, owls, eagles, flies, mosquitoes, lightning bugs, ants, bees, Spiders (insects are familiars only), Squirrels, chipmunks, flying squirrels (they glide, 5ft down for every 20ft forward), foxes, smaller birds like hummingbirds and sparrows, lizards, wolves, pretty much anything they can find in the forest that they can deal with on some level considering their size. Brownies grow to adult maturity in one year and each adult produces an average of 10 offspring per year. The gestation period for a brownie fetus is one month, once born it grows through its entire childhood in 3 months, a brownie’s equivalent teenage and early twenties are covered in the remaining 9 months of their first year, by their second year of life they are fully grown and mature enough to play a major role in brownie society. It is in this second year that they begin to reproduce, making them one generation per year. Twins, triplets and more are the norm for brownie mothers, in fact it is unheard of for a brownie to give birth to a single child. For this reason small Brownie populations can explode into the thousands in less than a decade. They have a lifespan of 10 years, by the age of 8 they are old and dying. 10 years for them is the equivalent of 100 years for a human. Brownies tend to have a high mortality rate, it is for this reason that they reproduce so much. Brownies on their own in the wild can easily maintain a small population due to the high rate of death from invasions by predators of all sorts. When brownies live alongside larger creatures such as the other fey in the forest they are well protected and therefore have a higher population. A Treant with brownies in his branches will have his brownie population multiply by ten every year. Eventually they will over crowd and have to start a new village on another Treant. Treants often pass down the Brownie heritage to their children, a single forest with several dozen Treants could be descended from a single pair of brownies in less than a century. Such brownie nations are not at all uncommon, in fact there is usually at least 1 or more brownie cities in any given forest. Since brownies hide from the big people, humans are often surprised to learn that they have a small city in their attic. Brownies are not usually religious, though brownie clerics worship deities such as Lurue, Ehlonna, Obad-Hai, Selune and other similar deities. A Brownie in the city is no more likely than anyone else to choose these gods however. The average brownie is not religious, just very superstitious. Brownies are usually chaotic, sometimes neutral but never lawful and they are as likely as humans to be good, neutral or evil. Technically, Brownies are not completely Fey, they are Fey with one foot in the life cycle. The spirit of a brownie is on its way to becoming an elf or a recently deceased elf on its way to becoming fey. Only the most courageous of elf spirits become brownies, this is why they are such fierce little warriors with no fear. Among brownies the sylvan word for fear is unknown, the sylvan word for frightened is a curse of the vilest order and the sylvan word for coward is an insult that justifies murder. Brownies do not know the actual meanings of these words, but they have a place in the culture and language of the brownies. It is not until a brownie learns another language that they learn the meanings of these words, using the words in any language disturbs a brownie, but they will only have the truly emotional response when the words are used in sylvan. Unlike other fey, Brownies need to rest every night, they rest just like elves do, by meditating for 4 hours a night, except that with brownies they actually lay down and appear to sleep. Brownies and Treants: A medium Treant can support a small Thorp of Brownies, a large Treant can support a village, a huge Treant can house a large town and once they reach gargantuan size they have enough room for a large city. A colossal Treant can be home to an entire metropolis of brownies with its branches. A Treant with brownies in his branches take a –8 to all physical rolls to prevent jarring the inhabitants too much, on a botched attack roll (or other major disruption) he looses 4d10 brownies as they fall to their deaths. The Treant can take a feat called Brownie Branches to drop this penalty to –4 and limit his loses to 2d12 and brownies in the branches get partial cover to AC, when the Treant reaches large size he can take another feat called Brownie Sanctuary that will drop the penalty to –2 and limit his loses to 2d6, with this feat the brownies in the branches gain complete cover rather than partial cover from the branches. At huge size the Treant can take one more feat called Brownie Habitat, this takes away all penalties and allows the Treant to grow extra branches that are stronger than usual that also have more leafs. This makes even the highest branches of the tree inhabitable by the brownies and safe even during combat or severe weather. The benefits of having brownies in the branches? In addition to caring for the Treant’s basic aesthetic needs such as pruning and other sorts of hygienic care, the brownies will defend their home with their lives. As the Treant grows so does the population of his brownie town, if the Treant takes leadership he can choose a few brownies to level in character classes. A Treant with brownies in his branches gains a swarm attack, on command (a free action once per round requiring a verbal command by the Treant) a hail of tiny arrows can come from the Treants branches to attack all enemies within 15ft, this attack deals 1d3 per 50 brownies in the branches and requires a DC13 fortitude save by anyone who takes this damage to avoid falling asleep. In addition to their normal +4 to climbing on wood a brownie has a +6 to climb within their own home tree, these two bonuses stack for a total +10 to climb when inside the home tree, if the tree is a Treant the brownie can always take ten on these climb checks. A Treant with brownies in his branches receives the full amount of healing when resting for 4 hours, instead of rolling a die for it he just takes the maximum amount. A Treant with brownies in its branches gets a +1 to spot, listen and sense motive because the brownies can whisper in its “ear” and help out. A Treant druid may choose a swarm of brownies for his animal companion, this Treant is treated as if having the Brownie Branches feat. Treant druids can only shift into plant forms until 11th level, then they can take on animal forms. For this reason, and because they cant use wild shape with a city in their branches, Treant druids use the wild shape variant from the unearthed arcana. The Urban Brownies of Ptolus: There is a small city’s worth of brownies in each district of the city of Ptolus. Each city has anywhere from 5 to 12 thousand brownies. The smallest city is barely at 5,000 brownies, they are in the warrens. One of the largest brownie cities is in Oldtown in the city library. The head librarian is a pixie who allowed some brownies to move in secretly and the town just kept growing. Right now they have a massive apartment complex built in the rafters at the very top of the library. The commercial district and luxury homes are in the walls and the industrial part of town is hidden away in a forgotten corner of the basement. This is where the brownie artisans create all the needed things for the community, or they alter things stolen from the big people. The leader of this community lives in a mansion carved out of one of the chimney stacks. This stack runs down to the basement and used to be attached to a furnace but the furnace broke down years ago and was never repaired. The chimney stack went unused and when the pixie allowed the brownies to move in she let them use the chimney stack. So all of the brownie’s fires are routed through this chimney and the mayor of the city built his house in the chimney stack on the roof of the library. There is no big city in the nobles quarter, rather there are many “villages” of brownies. There are no more than 6 thousand all together in the nobles quarter and they fancy themselves to be noble as well. Although only one family of brownies lives in the house of an actual noble. |
| PwnageLlama06-05-07, 06:43 PM | I don't know if this has been adressed, as I have not read the whole thread. If the brownies have 0 HD, then a spell like Sleep (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/sleep.htm) will take out a whole lot of them. |
| Matthew7706-05-07, 07:33 PM | The players handbook, page 149 says “25 diminutive creatures … can fit into a single (5ft) square.” This is the rule for treating each one as a separate creature. They all need enough space to move around and attack normally. According to the Monster Manual page 237 a swarm is considered a “single creature with a space of 10 feet” so logically a swarm of diminutive creatures that takes up 10 feet, or 4 5ft squares, should contain 100 diminutive creatures, yet the monster manual goes on to say that a swarm of non flying diminutive creatures is made up of 1,500. this would assume they are crawling all over each other, which they are not. These are the rules for a swarm. A swarm of rats is literally a carpet of rats flowing over everything, you couldn't even see the ground between them. Think of medium creatures... the normal seperation for medium creatures is one per 5' square. That is the equivalent of 25 dimunitive creatures per 5' square. But if that square was full of people crammed as close as they could be.. think of how many people can stand in a 5' square shoulder to shoulder... maybe 20 or more. That is the equivalent of a swarm. If you want a lot of little dimunitive creatures, they need separate stats and can fit 25 per 5' square. They will also be more dangerous to the PCs because that many attack rolls will mean a couple crits each round, and each one will have to destroyed individually. If you want to have the image of uncountable little guys attacking en mass, and want to simplify the game mechanics, use the swarm stats. |
| someonelse81206-05-07, 09:30 PM | that is what I have been doing, I ran the above mentioned encounter this past weekend and it went great. the players were totally caught off gaurd. once they killed the leaders of the brownies the rest scattered. when one of the brwonie swarms was defeated, according to swarm rules they disperse. but since they have better stats all around (except for hitpoints) when they are individuals instead of having them attack I just assumed that their troop morale was low and they are in retreat. I've been thinking of a swarm of brownies as being 100 tropps marching in formation. as for the HD issue I have addressed that by giving them 1d6, although I dont know if that revision made it into this thread or not. I will repost the updated racial traits for the brownie. |
