I am going to play an iaitsu master this weekend, and I was wondering to all the DMs out there:

Would you allow a I.M: to use a buckler in addition to the int bonus to ac? It is technically different bonuses, but I would like to hear your opinions.

(Basically, I intend to enchant it with fire protection and arrow deflecting... Nice for fighting dragons and the whole "knocking away arrows with your hand" is  )

As a DM I would never allow an IM to use any type of shield. It is an completely foreign idea to the very conscept of the character. Nor would I allow any Samurai to use shields at any time. There is the stigma of dishonor in hidding behind a plank of wood.

Nor would I, for that matter, allow a Samurai to even wear armor unless he engaging in a battle, with an established enemy, during a declared period of war or was going into the Shadowlands.

I'm not just saying this as a DM but also as someone who has studied Japanese culture, religon, and history. (Masters Degree). However it is just a game and if your DM allows it, so be it! I would disagree, but that's me.

If I were your DM and I did allow you to use a shield, it would be only be a buckler and I would give you negative modifiers to yours roll when attacking with any Samurai Weapon, (as the training would never incorperate the use of a shield, even one as simple as abuckler) and a dishonorable reputation if you ever used it in a duel.

Since Samurai have no shield proficiency, WHY whould he use one?

Get Datsanas (Which ARE allowed for duelests) and suck it up boy.
