A question: if you were gathering a new group of players (being a DM), where were you looking for them and if it was on the net, where it was posted and what was exactly was in the announcement?
Theatre and library (fantasy related) sites and forums currently come to mind, but a there is nothing like real life experience.
Role-playing sites are also the option, but it takes more than several weeks to get a reply of that kind (my statistic after monitoring posts dynamics for half a year).

I would try the RPG Gamer Classified forums on these boards. In the announcement just say what kind of game its gonna be. What setting its in, time and place you would like it to be held, that sort of stuff.

to chiefcastor: thanks for the idea, but the problem is IMO, that already involved people are most likely occupied already, while unoccupied ones won’t be hanging there. Although it won’t hurt to try, that’s for sure.

To make it more clear: if the game is held in “meeting variant” and the announcement only is on the web, what would be worth to put in (or was put in by you and brought a positive result (or what not to put))

I actually just found a game myself using those boards. I had recently moved and didnt know anyone to play with so I would just periodically check them... then one day... bam... a game in my area.

I also found a very good game on these boards. Unfortunetly job conflicts made me drop it.

Still it can work.
