Bursting weapons. [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-21-06, 09:36 PM I have done some reading and have found myself confused because I have encountered different things about bursting weapons.

Example: A +1 Flaming Burst Longsword without feats and keen, crits on a 19-20. Against a hobgoblin you roll a 19 "boom" 1d10 fire explosion on him. However I have seen it used where even if you hit a critical threat on something not subject to crits (undead) the weapon still bursts for the flame dmg, you just don't get the 1d8x2 dmg from the weapon. Is this the case? Perhaps a house rule? I haven't gotten to search through the DMG in excess so bare with me. Does a bursting weapon burst on every threat, every confirmed crit, on only creatures that can be crit?

Yes, a Burst weapon still deals the extra damage on a crit, even if the weapon itself doesn't.

Question? Do you actually have to confirm the crit?(even on creatures immune) Or is it simply you roll a threat that would be a hit with your AB and boom.(rolling a 19 when using a longsword, even when your confirm is only a 3 not a crit)

You still roll to confirm it as normal. :)

12-21-06, 09:56 PM So a weapon only bursts if it is a confirmed critical hit no matter the targets immunities. I think it's sinking in. Thank you.

So if you had a Fiery Burst greatsword, for example, you'd still get the extra fire damage if you scored a crit with it against an undead guy, even though you wouldn't get the regular double-damage for the crit because undead are immune to crits.
