| Tolby01-10-07, 04:48 PM | Slightly confused with two questions. I want to know how to calculate the CR of a NPC (warrior, adept, etc) character. Is it Level/2? Example 10th level warrior is a CR5? Lastly adding multiple NPC into a encounter. If I remember correctly every doubling of the QTY of a CR creature = a +1 to EL. So 1 10th level warrior is a CR5, 2 is a CR 6 and 4 is a CR 7? Lastly if someone knows the page numbers to reference that might help out alot. |

It depends on the kind of class you give your Non-Player Character. If your going for one of the classes in the PHB, CR = level, but if your taking classes out of the DMG (like you mentioned) it's half the CR. The other part of your question I leave to someone with the DMG in his hands. Cheers |

You want the DMG, pages 38 (NPC CR's) and 48-49 (Multiple creature EL's) In general, NPC classes work out at CR = level - 1 (except for 1st level which is CR 1/2). Also, I think that multiple creatures run to the rule x2 number = +2 CR. |

Example 10th level warrior is a CR5?It depends on what race the creature is. A creature with 1 racial HD has a CR = Character Level + Racial Mod. The Racial Modifier is -1 unless specified in the description of the monster (see Goblin for an example). A 10th level Human Warrior is CR9. A 10th level Kobold Warrior is CR7. Things get much more complicated if the creature's Racial HD are 2 or more. Look up the section on Improving Monsters in the MM. Lastly adding multiple NPC into a encounter. If I remember correctly every doubling of the QTY of a CR creature = a +1 to EL. So 1 10th level warrior is a CR5, 2 is a CR 6 and 4 is a CR 7?Encounters with multiple creatures do not have a CR. The Challenge Rating is a property of an individual creature, not a group. Groups of creatures have an Encounter Level (EL). The terms are not interchangeable. If the encounter is homogeneous, each time you double the numbers, add 2 to the EL. If they're mixed, consult the EL table in the DMG (page 49) for a first estimate. |
