| Aelfric_Parvoti04-01-07, 08:09 PM | The group I play with, depending on who is DMing, likes to allow called shots. For example, head shots, slit throat, and the like. They usually say something like, you can take a head shot with -8 to the attack roll, and so if they hit its supposedly automatic death or incapacitation... whichever. Can be pretty stupid when some small-size fighter takes a crap-load of weapon finess & weapon focus style feats. The problem with this is it can make combat completely boring and unchallenging, unless they always are fighting undead or constructs. Also, more importantly, I have never seen these rules in any D&D book. Have I missed them? or am I right to think this is stupid? |
| Amon_WinterfallIV04-01-07, 08:36 PM | It is, indeed, very stupid. Proceed to Called Shot: EYE until the DM relents. Argue that a shot to the eye is a CdG in terms of damage. Use the magic spell True Strike to ensure that Called Shot EYE hits--frequently. This is should eventually get the DM to back down from this one. |

In fact, create a new feat called Called Shot that works like exactly like power attack. So now you can take that -8 to hit your opponents head, and you get +16 damage from it. |

You could use "Called Shot" and Power Attack to add your BAB to damage and hit only on a 20. If you could go 2 weapon fighting and do some attackmongering... Or you could turn True Strike into a +10 damage buff. I'm not sure I like the consequences of another Power Attack. Diminishing returns, sure; but I think this one's going to be cracked--after a certain point, only 20 hits your target anyway. At this point, this combo is basically adding free damage. Well, I'll admit its better than going CdG on a an opponent. BTW- Kobolds and True Strike should result in TPK. Good Luck. |
| wrecan04-01-07, 11:41 PM | It's stupid. Everyone should take a level of sorcerer and learn true strike. Round one-true strike. Round two-called shot to head. |
| inthesto04-02-07, 12:27 AM | Neverwinter Nights had a feat called Called Shot, where you could take a -2 (or was it -4?) to your next attack roll and aim for the arm or leg. An arm shot would force a -2 penalty to all attack rolls for the next minute, and a leg shot would force the target's movement speed down by a category. It wasn't the hottest feat ever, but it was fluffy (though I do know there's a feat called Hamstring somewhere, which more or less replicates Called Show: Leg). However, something like Called Shot: Head or Called Shot: Any Vital Organ is just stupid. Sounds like the players just want an easy way out without realizing brokeness is a two-way street. Whoever DMs should really just put their foot down and say no; actually (BOOM) headshotting players shouldn't really be necessary. |
| antsterr04-02-07, 01:25 AM | I've found a good solution for my group, if they get a crit that does big damage or is a killing blow I let them describe the way they hit. Any declared shots to the face/neck/heart/junk might hit, but they still cause the normal HP damage and depending on how sever it is will dictate how I describe the hit. A arrow to the face for 2 HP on a 30 HP creature will be a glancing blow or just stick in it's thick skull will only a little of the tip in. A kick to the neck that does 15 damage to a creature with 5 hp or who's down to 5 hp will break it's neck. It doesn't change any game mechanic, just rp fluff. |
| Roivas04-02-07, 01:35 AM | I also prefer to let my damage determine where my attacks are going. There are no called shots in D&D because then the entire party gets killed by the first devil or demon they encounter. Anything with a decent intelligence and a high to hit will just cut off the head of every single thing it encounters. What does your group think voral is for? Or does the group never make it past first level since the monsters simply slice their throats in the first dungeon over and over again? I'm really confused on why your group even thinks the game could work this way. |
| Leilond04-02-07, 07:08 AM | There is already something that can be thinked as a "called shot" in 3.5 Trip with "improved trip" => Called shot to leg (trip + possible damage) Disarm => Called shot to opponent weapon Power attack => Called shot to a vulnerable opponent zone Sneak attack => Called shot to a vital spot Called shot are COMPLETELY out of the game mechanics Do you want your "players" stop to ask for it? Put in some kobold sorcerers that use "true strike" and "called shot to head". After 2 dead player you're players will recognize the inconsistency of their request |
