Do you have these in your campaigns ? How do you handle them ? Meaning how would you get the player in and then get rid of him before the next session ?

How do you introduce any NPC and then not have them come back again?

Have them passing through, meet 'em at the bar one night, but they're too busy with their own stuff to help the party, that sort of thing.

It helps if your cameo PC is involved in a quest of his/her own that just happens to coincide with the current party's goals, if only for a particular encounter.

After the encounter is resolved, the cameo PC may have to continue doing what he/she was doing. They can part on good terms and he'd be successfully out of the adventure again.

So you would have to be an entirely separate adventure just to have 1 cameo appearance ?

Not exactly... think of it this way.

I'm assuming you have a player that wants to play for one session. I have no idea what your current story is like, but perhaps the party is involved in some grand scheme of things, and end up getting ambushed by a group of creatures or something on the way to their destination. Well it could turn out that this "guest" PC was hired by someone else to stop these ambushes, as they've been becoming more and more of a concern.

The ambush itself doesn't fare into the overall plot that your main party is involved in, but also gives the guest PC a reason for showing up at the right time, and when the encounter is resolved, doesn't leave the guest PC with any real reason to stay WITH the party.

That's more of what I was getting at.... their goals/motives only coincide temporarily...

I'm doing something like this, where there's a powerful NPC who just happens to be in the area (only a level or so above them) whose goals lead into the PCs

I've got higher-level NPCs that are often nearby. They're usually off scene at convenient times (combat), but once in a while they'll be involved. In our last session a druid zotted down a monster in the player's "area" of a mass combat situation after he took out the ones in his "area". I usually limit these interventions to battles that have been generally determined (characters killed 8 of 10 & this probably saved 10-15 minutes of game time).

The guy I'm planning is more like a level above them. They're 18's who meet a powerful unique half-fiend (no spell-like abilities, but new supernatural ones) who's got an ECL of 19. i plan on using him to lure the PCs into annother adventure after this one's done. The new adventure is what I plan to lead them into epic stuff.

Ooopppssss....

I originally looked at this thread because I thought it might be about cameo NPC characters appearing in a game ( you know, like the PC's bumping into a character from a book, film or real life ).

How dumb am I? ( for those inclined to give me an answer, this is rhetorical question. I already know how dumb I am. )

Actually pog, I initially clicked on it for the same reason. So don't feel TOO bad.
