| Blinky96907-21-06, 01:56 AM | One of my parties is about to run through to the plane of Fire, and I need an encounter site for them. We've played planes campaigns for awhile and I'ld like something original for them. They're a high level (18-20), so I don't have to worry about anything killing them too easily. I would, however, really like to make this a memorable encounter, so the more fantastical the location on the EPF, the better. |
| Damren07-21-06, 08:14 AM | Just to clarify a few points; What's their mission on the plane of fire? Are there any elements you would like to see in the encounter, or is this just a filler before the actual quest? PC Classes? When you talk about the plane of fire, what do you envision it being like? |
| Renvale99907-21-06, 08:44 AM | Elder Fire Elemental with a couple fighter lvls (maybe like 7 or 8) and wearing brimstone full plate (treat as +5 full plate) wielding a +5 unholy greatsword. Yeah, bring it on high lvl adventuring party....maybe add a couple of lower CR elementals to soak up some damage. |
| Rerecros07-21-06, 09:25 AM | A clan of Azer A nobel party of salamanders A band of Efreeti A swarm of Rasts |
| Jawrion07-21-06, 09:39 AM | A battle atop a covered volcano, with cracks and crevices that spew flames and magma. Have the party fight a beefed up fire elemental of some sort and some of his minions (much like Renvale999's suggestion). To top it off have the volcano errupt/cave in near the end of the fight, causing them to fight him in the middle of the volcano with rapidly deteriorating health. Then sit back and watch the fireworks. |
| bg2soatob07-21-06, 09:47 AM | Do they know they're going to the plane of fire? If yes, I'm assuming they have all their cold and water spells ready. Throw in a frost giant ally to the fire giants (with class levels, of course) who wears a ring of fire resistance to protect against the plane. Or simply have a fire giant with a ring of frost resistance - this is easier to explain, but more cliche. I can't think of how this could be pulled off, but if you could make an aquatic adventure in the plane of fire that would catch the PCs off guard. Taking about aquatic gives me a better idea. You have some slightly weaker monster (like salamanders), but en masse, try to bull rush them into a pool of lava. Inside the pool is another monster (of course immune to fire), whose job is to hold the PCs in the lava as well as attack them (maybe some kind of advanced fire kraken?) Those PCs who are immune to fire (which I'm assuming will be most) still have to deal with suffocation from being underlava, AND the attack from the fire kraken. If they all get pushed in, the salamanders jump in too to help the fire kraken. |
| Blinky96907-22-06, 07:25 AM | They suspect they're going somewhere through the planes, but don't know where. I already know what situation I'm getting them into, meaning what participants. I was probably going to have them pinned down between an azer epiditionary force and efreet. I was asking for a location, if any of you have any particularly vivid ideas. The volcano idea would be alright, but we already had a bridge battle recently, as the last adventure ended somewhat funnily. I had intended them to fight a dragon cleric in his antechamber after slaying two mature adult blues in the cavern. The cavern had a rope bridge to the clerics chambers. The party ends up sneaking past the dragons, until the rogue decides to go back to try to grab a gem he saw. Dragons wake up, shoot out of the cavern, and they get in an epic battle on the rope bridge fighting dragons. After the party is almost dead and victorious, the cleric comes out. The wizard casts suggestion. The cleric rolls a 2. The wizard suggests the cleric comes onto the bridge. Everyone gets off the bridge. The fighter cuts the ropes to the bridge. The cleric snaps out of the suggestion in time to be cognizent when he faceplants into a rock 100 feet below. So yea, bridge battles are out for now. At least not around any npcs I like. The underwater idea might be good, and fire krakens make me happy for some perverse reason, but that might deal a little too much damage for this adventure, as I don't really care about hurting them, but I don't want to daunt them, as they're rather enthusiastic to get to the next part of the story. I guess what I really wanted was a vivid location I could use as a strong introduction to the far planes. Despite this being a high level campaign, we haven't adventured on the planes really, besides a few trips to one particular stop in Asgard where a contact lives, we've done nothing out there. So this is our first welcome to the lands of the unimaginable gala. The more incredulous the geography, the better. |
| taradusis07-22-06, 07:41 AM | Have them start on the edge of a volcano and move to the center, make them dive and swim thru lava to get somewhere. If you describe the heat ,lack of air,the oppressive sense of doom and concern that this might kill them it might cause some concern? |

Despite this being a high level campaign, we haven't adventured on the planes really, besides a few trips to one particular stop in Asgard where a contact lives, we've done nothing out there. So this is our first welcome to the lands of the unimaginable gala. The more incredulous the geography, the better. They stand on jagged field of barren stone, the red glow of the landscape lit by the vast clouds of fire that wash across the dark hued sky. Several hundred yards away, a jet of flame leaps from the ground, towering a thousand feet into the sky. Drifing up from the horizon, a large red stone mass rises. Floating higher as their heatbeats race, randomly spitting streams of fire out from deep craters across its face. One fire jet seems to be coming right toward them, but if fails to reach and the group feels only a hot wind blow by. Accute eyes will spot other, drifing stone masses beyond the clouds of flame. The party soon finds itself pelted by 'black hail stones' that are hot to the touch (make any saves you might require). In the distant sky, a dark red comet streaks by. As they search the area they notice a brass spires in the distance. As they close to investigate the see a huge brassine Maw lying open in the cliff side, the spires leading to it in two large rows. The Maw takes the shape of a great lions head (or insert other creature that suits you or will creep out your PCs) and between the fangs lies a darkened cave... |
| Jawrion07-22-06, 01:06 PM | In a steam cloud; or with a river of magma slowly filling the area (leaving little ground to walk on); A rock ledge perched atop a gauzier of flame (causing the ledge to shoot up into the air for 1d3 rounds-balance checks not to be knocked over/fall off etc-every 1d6 rounds); or maybe a raging storm of fiery 'hail', meteors, dirt storms (think sand storm but much hotter) and random areas bursting into flame while they 'sail' down a river of magma fighting the enemy attempting to board their ship. Hmmm how about an unusual geographic region where walls of fire sprout up randomly. These walls would be so hot that they would be impossible to penetrate without magic (or a nasty save) and would cause damage even without magic. The layout of the 'walls' would change randomly every few rounds. Can't think of anything else right now. |
