To cut a long story short I’m planning a campaign where the characters encounter a situation based on each of the 7 sins. Its a cliché I know but I don’t have much time to write an in depth story. I am currently totally stuck on the sin of pride, everyone I have asked has said pride is vanity but i’m not sure how to make an encounter out of it. Has anyone got any ideas on this?

As a last resort I was going to use a cavern containing a dragon and voices urging the players to kill it because they are superior but they can just talk to the dragon to receive the item they need. But this is lame in my opinion, very lame.

Below I’ll write what I’ve got so far if anyone is interested *warning* this will be quite long so you don’t have to read it, my campaigns work on a ‘anything goes system’ so as suggestions go anything could work. If you think of anything for other sins feel free to write it in

This adventure is to bring some old characters out of retirement at about level 8 because the players didn’t get the prestige class or achieve a goal when their characters retired in their original campaigns. They will be first summoned (as in appear) into a room where a monk will be sitting infront of 3 doors.
1. The short and easy road to hell
2. Purgatory
3. The long and difficult road to heaven

These will at the end be shown as tests from the gods to pick champions to defeat the uber boss monster at the end of the campaign. If the players go through the long and difficult road to heaven they encounter the sins and from each one they gain a shrunken head which will unlock the location of the boss battle.

Envy: The players must escort two ladies to pray at a shrine (to gain their deities permission for their marriage) there the players will encounter a hag (from libris mortis) which specialises in draining abilities and using them as her own for a short while. Also has a few pick pocketing cohorts.

Sloth: A cavern with a hot spring contains many pretty ladies (who are really demons) who will wait on any comers hand and foot so the people have to do nothing all day. Eventually they turn to ooze and drain away though holes in the floor into a massive room which contains huge ooze and several smaller oozes. Here the players have a chance to try and save the people who have not melted away yet. Theres a great ooze template which i’m going to use on a few creatures in here dms guide II or MMIII i think.

Greed: An enormous cylindrical puzzle cavern with several rows of doors all around the room. Each set of doors and the accompanying 5X5ft rooms can swivel around. Some rooms contain holes, some contain treasures and other bits and bobs. The shrunken head is suspended from a chain in the ceiling so the players must try and get up there. The thing with the treasure is that it cannot be taken out of it’s little room without leaving something of the same value inside the room when you take it. If not you can loose other things such as years and age alot. I’ll write this puzzle in more detail later.

Wrath: a multi tribe battle over something really stupid, the players can either beat them all to death or find a difficult diplomatic solution for bonus xp

Lust: not sure yet but involves blue magics... lol

Gluttony: This will be fun, a collection of monsters who eat everything... even the ground the players stand on and the players its a fight for survival followed by some jump checks ect.... climb checks on walls being eaten from the bottom ect...

Thank you for reading this far and I look forward to reading ideas :)

The PCs have to fight lions (a pride, get it?)

Ok, serious suggestion now.

The PCs find themselves face to face with the BBEG (not the actual BBEG, but a powerful illusionist taking his form). He informs the players that their gods have decieved them, and that if they agree to become their champions they will be little more than slaves. He tells them that he can give them more power than they can imagine if they simply renounce the gods and join him. This is complemented with illusions of the PCs, first serving the gods slavishly, then being worshipped as gods themselves.

If the PCs attack, the illusionist hides behind his illusions, making them attack shadows and duplicates. Occasionally he strikes them with mocking blows, intended to humiliate rather than to kill. All the while he taunts them, telling them that they are too weak to defeat him, and that they need to accept the power that he offers to have a chance of winning. All that they need to do to gain that power is to destroy images of the gods that he sets out for them.

In reality the illusionist is a paper tiger. As soon as the PCs figure out his web of illusions and lies, a few solid hits should finish him. As soon as he falls, his illusions fade, revealing him for what he really is, a scrawny man with delusions of grandure, the shrunken head in his hands, a mocking smile still on his face.

what I thought of as a "pride quest":

The PC's find, or are given, a castle, and it is well-explained that it is a symbol of power and that their rulership is meaningless without it. Then 2 huge creatures attak. 1 attacks the castle, the other attacks the countryfolk.

The PC's have to choose whether to save the countryfolk and lose the castle (and thus their authority within the land), or keep their rulership at the expense of their subjects.

Not perfect, i know, and in serois need of tweaking, but I think that could be the basis for an excellent "pride" test.
