so there's a quote that goes along the lines of "there are really only nine stories", meaning all tales fall into one of several broad categories. i figure the same is true of campaigns.

how many can we think of? here's three

the freeform campaign: the campaign is a series of unconnected adventures with little or no overarching plot

the 'trap door' campaign: the first few levels are really just foreplay, establishing the norm. then something happens to seriously upset the norm and the pcs spend the rest of the campaign restoring normality.

the artifact hunt: for one of an infinite supply of reasons, the pcs have to acquire or destroy an artifact.

what else we got?

If it's a true campaign, then there is only one kind, you got a world full of squirrels, go find a nut...

a true campaign is only one type, a world full of plot twisting schemers all trying to make a better living than the other guy and most willing to do whatever it takes to achieve that, drop the pc's in the mix, turn them loose, and then watch the true random encounters kill them all

"78% of DM's started their first campaign in a tavern. If you're one of the 22% that didn't, copy and paste this into your signature."

Mine started with a single PC "a orphaned 16 year old boy / a 0 level ranger" in a lineshack outhouse on the outskirts of a horse ranch in the middle of nowhere, during the worst blizzard ever recorded at midnight on New Years Eve (Hammer 1) a moment before an orcish army of 25,000 soldiers plowed thru the area...

Slay the King!
The PCs are members of a rebellion movement to kill the tyrannical ruler of the land and restore peace and happiness.

Fetch This, Fetch That, AHHH THE HORNED RAT IS UPON US
A sub-category of the Trap Door campaign, this one involves the PCs being the ones to set up the Trap Door. This can be further differentiated by giving them a choice whether to be part of the Trap Door or not, by having them decide to join forces with the huge change they unwittingly unleashed or fight against it.

The Twist:

The campaign starts as something trivial or a small quest, but turns into something unexpected, something bigger, etc.

I don't think that really calls for its own campaign type. That's just a plot twist.

On a more general level, I'd add;

The Map There's a world out there with stuff in it. The players can bimble around doing more or less what they like.

The Relay Race The DM gives the players a plot hook, and lets them run with it.
