Can a cleric rebuke/command a summoned elemental? [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-24-04, 10:02 AM I have a cleric PC in a game I'm running who has taken the fire domain and so can rebuke/command fire elemenals and turn/destroy water elementals.

They're about to encounter a wizard who tends to summon fire elementals. My question is which has the greater control over the elemental; the summoner or the cleric who succeeds in using a turn attempt to command it?

Is there a caster level check involved (wizard's caster level vs. cleric's effective turn level?)

Has anyone run into or resolved this problem in their game or does anyone know of an official ruling on it somewhere?

06-24-04, 11:12 AM I would imangine you figure it out exactly like a turn undead check, substuiting of course anywhere it said undead with the relvant elemental statistics.

and keep the spell duration. so if the spell that summoned the elemental last 9 rounds and by the 4th round the cleric took control of the elemental, the elemental would only stay around for another 5 rounds before it goes away. That way it won't unbalance the game with your player cleric running around with a horde of elemental underlings.

06-24-04, 11:50 AM So your conclusions are that the cleric's ability to turn/command trumps the spellcaster's control over his summoned servant automatically (as though he were turn/commanding an uncontrolled elemental) if the turn/command check succeeds.

If the cleric encountered a normal elemental there's no question in my mind that if his attempt is successful he would control it. But the spellcaster is supposed to have command over any creature he summons.

It seems to me like they both have a legitimate means of forcing the elemental to obey in which case their should be a means of resolving whose control is the stronger and will therefore be obeyed.

06-24-04, 03:49 PM Rebuke undead can affect controlled or even sentient undead, so I don't see why Rebuke Elemental would work any differently.
