Hello,
I have a question regarding bonus spells.

Could a 1st level cleric character with a 18 WISDOM (+1 spell for level 1, 2, 3, 4) cast a fourth level spell thanks to this bonus spell, or does the bonus applies only when he reaches a level that allows him to cast such a spell ?

It is the same question for a wizard (could a 18 Int level 1 wizard cast a bull strength thanks to his bonus spell or should he wait until he gets to level 3) ?
It seems that the second choice is correct, but I cannot say where I found the rule which allows it...

Thanks

No, bonus spells apply to the levels that you can already cast naturally. So you only get the 4th lvl bonus spell at the level that allows you to cast 4th lvl spells.

I think it should alos be noted that a third level wizard can't cast third level spells. Spell levels aren't tied to class levels.

The only way that a spellcaster can cast a spell of a higher level than he can cast is by using scrolls. He must make a DC check of Scroll's Caster Level +1.

The SRD has the answer - Page 2 of Basics under Abilities and Spellcasters says...

In addition to having a high ability score, a spellcaster must be of high enough class level to be able to cast spells of a given spell level. (See the class descriptions for details.)

With the possibility of something nasty happening if the check fails...

Yeah, but the check is so minimal that it is almost impossible to fail. It is something like a wisdom check DC 5 + spell level....
