| rbrt_Spade10-29-05, 11:43 AM | i am making a npc that is a medium human flan fighter that i would like to wield a medium size longsword 2-handed, could i do this by raw? would i do the 1.5 damage with it being do handed? note-i play 3.0. |
| Rhomphaia10-29-05, 11:54 AM | Unless I miss my guess, by 3.0 rules, you can use a weapon of your size or one size larger in both hands to gain the strength bonus. I never did delve too much into the nuts and bolts of 3.0, but I think this is the case. In 3.5, I do know for a fact that you can use a one-handed or two-handed weapon in this manner. |
| Fixxxer10-29-05, 01:53 PM | This is not the right forum for this question. That being said, yes, you can use a longsword with both hands to get the extra damage. Note that you are not doing 1.5 times the damage you normally do (I've seen that mistake before), your adding 1.5 times your Strength modifier to damage. Additionally, it's up to the DM as to whether he wants to allow you the +4 bonus against Disarm attempts for using your weapon in both hands or not. |

I mean, if you're fighting with longsword and shield and someone sunders your shield or similar, then I suppose it could make sense... but someone who goes into battle intending to do that?? |

So he has the option of weilding it one handed. there are plenty of reasons, just think about it |
| The Abominable Darkling10-29-05, 02:57 PM | No, there really aren't. Even if you're wielding a greatsword, you can simply hold it with one hand whenever you need a hand free for something else (you just can't attack that way). |

He never said anyone intended to do that. Sometimes you can't select the most optimal weapon in the PHB and you have to make do. My PC has spent the past two sessions wielding a longsword two-handed. He's currently without his shield, so he might as well - it became important to know whether this was allowable or not. |
| rbrt_Spade10-29-05, 03:11 PM | im making a elf fighter npc that i would like to fight with a longsword. the longsword is a very important weapon to the elf, the sword of his dead father. he chooses not to fight with anything else becuase he believies his fathers spirit helps him. thanks for the info guys. |

| Outla10-29-05, 03:23 PM | Just the other day I had my sword-and-board fighter swinging his axe at a monster, big shield in the other hand. At some point it became clear that the monster was ignoring him, intent on trying to grab one of the children I was protecting and fly off with it. So I dropped the shield and started swinging the axe with both hands, just for the extra 1 point of damage. This kind of thing actually comes up fairly often... there are plenty of odd situations where you might decide to swing a medium weapon with both hands. |
