Can anyone tell me how this could be happening?

Our party has encountered the same ogre three times. The first time, we killed him in his lair, barricaded the doors so we could camp. In the middle ofthe night, the ogre was up and attacking us.

The second time, we fought him again and killed him again. This time we hacked apart his body and burned it. He came back to life because we encountered him AGAIN at the next gaming session.

This third time, we lopped off his head, burned the body, and I am carrying his head around in a bag of holding.

How can this guy keep coming back to life? Unless there is an invisible high-level cleric who stays near him and can cast true resurrection, I dont see how else it would be possible...

Maybe it wasn't the same ogre. Maybe they were triplets ;)

Are you sure it's the same ogre? Is it really an ogre, or an illusion?

Well, you have several options here:

1. Yes, there is some weird cleric following this ogre around.

2. There may be some evil otherworldy influence attributed to the ogre, maybe something lich'y.

or

3. You just have an oddly sadistic DM who will either:

a. eventually explain want is going on with the ogre.

b. never touch on what was going on.

c. leave it alone now because getting the ogre back now would be pretty extreme.

Sounds like this is your DM's plot hook, go find out.

I agree it is likely the DMs plot-hook. Unless he just does random things to annoy you. (If he hasn't in the past, he probably isn't starting now.)

I can think of one very good plot device to which this is a hook, and it's not really a complex plot, either. I'm sure many have used it. I could tell you what it is...but I won't. Simply because I would be really annoyed if one of my players went to a board and found the answer to one of my plotlines just by asking another DM. I'd be annoyed at the player...and annoyed at the DM who spilled the beans.

I'm sure there are several different plots that this could hook into. Why don't you post it here when you DO find out what is going on? Then we can all pat ourselves on the back and say "told you so" if we were right or say "didn't see that coming..." if we were wrong. :P

Curst template from Faerun would do that. Try metagaming and cast remove curse on him. :embarrass

DO you flip to the end of a murder mystery book? Why do you want to ruin the mystery?

It's a game. You're supposed to figure out the puzzles using in-game resources, not come runnin to a board and hope someone has read the same module or used the same creature.

Oooh! I know the answer! Pick me!

Magic!

Er...okay, so that's not very helpful. Really though, you should have the wizards & other spellcasters making spellcraft checks to see if they remember any spells that might allow this. You might also see if any of the other characters know of any devices/magical items or creatures capable of doing this (if they have appropriate knowledge.)

I'm sure your DM has some reason for it; don't stress about it out of game :)

I think that I know the plothook; I've never used it before myself, but I think I'm going to soon.

PS- I'm not telling either; you've got moxy trying to spoil your DMs adventure... for shame!

True Ressurection?

Or maye it's just that all Ogres look the same to you. :P

Or see if there's an arcane or church library in town and look it up.

Personally, I like this hook. It's simple.

I do this to my players all the time. They know flat out that anything I do in my campaign can be replicated using existing creatures, templates, spells, traps, items, etc. So when they run into something really strange, it really burns their toast trying to figure out why the hell this or how the heck that.

Most recently they were fighting medium rat-creatures and one got his leg ripped off by something in a crate when he failed a jump check badly and passed his leg into it, falling prone. They eventually determined there was a rabbit in the crate, and it was muching on a carrot. There was a blood stain on the floor, but no leg. That one through them for a loop.

In a 1st edition game I played for all of 30 minutes the party battled a troll and chopped off its head. We found the same troll sleeping in a hole several game-hours later, because it had regenerated.

Maybe your DM has orges confused with trolls...?

no its definitely an ogre. and its definitely the same one cuz the third time we encountered it the DM had us make a wisdom check and those who passed were told that yep, its the same ogre...

Definately a plot-hook, and a cool one, I must say. I think I'm going to do something similar myself.

A wizard did it.

....what?

Anyway, beat the explanation out of your DM like hes a Pinata and the explanation is candy.

If real candy falls out, thats a bonus.

Stop asking people and go with it in-game. Its definatly a plot hook.

Shape-shifting Lich Dragon.

Gnome Illusionist.

You are encountering the same ogre as he time travels from the past, trying to figure out why he dies so young in his future.

A Living Resurrection Spell lurks in the area, undoing all of your damage.

Quit asking and find out in game.

What do you mean "roleplay the investigation"?
Have you talked to priests, mages, wizards, experienced adventurers or heroes, sages of note on the subject?

Aside from being some sort of plot hook three possibilities come to mind.

1. Somebody likes this ogre and keeps raising it from the dead or it has some magic property to that effect.
2. You never actually kill the real ogre instead it either regenerates or misleads you into thinking you've killed it.
3. It's already dead and is now an undead of some sort. I don't know about the curst mentioned before but a ogre vampire may be a possibility. A vamp could use normal weapons to hide its special attacks from the party and appear to be a normal monster.

Three times isn't very many. Keep going. For example, put an arcane mark or something on his body. Work in-game.

DM: *Arcane Riddle*
Player: "Oh! Oh! I went on a board and they told me the answer! It's (whatever)"
DM: "Rocks fall, everybody dies."

Just because he's bleeding on the ground doesnt mean hes at -10 (yes I know its a plot hook I'm just saying)
As to the "Bad player quit asking questions!" Screw that if your playing a wizard with a Int of 18 boosted via magic go anywhere you want for ideas it'll help your character seem more like a wizards with a high Int.

Several people are saying that this ogre that keeps coming back to life is a plot hook and a very good one at that.

Now can someone please PM me what this is actually a hook to? WHat is the adventure? Because it sounds interesting and I might like to use it.
Also does it only work with an ogre?

Thanks to anyone who decides to clue me in....

It's a plot hook, absolutely.
And if your not a wizard of 18+ int (as suggested a few posts up), stop whining.

Have you thought about this problem another way?
Maybe the Ogre is not the problem.
above post gave a clue.

Greetings.

well actually i AM a wizard. we are in Faerun, in Sembia specifically. I took my training in Silverymoon, so next game session I am going to trek back up there to use the Wizard College to solve this damn thing.....

And yes, my Int is 18, much higher than my Int in real life, so I came here looking for answers....

can someone just tell me the friggin answer? :weep:

Ok then, youve gotten all kinds of suggestions. So have your wizard investigate from there.

Personally if I was dm and my players went to the boards about it I would be upset. Lol would probably trap every barrel they drop a fish in after that :evillaugh. Anyways, since you are asking, I would say that you should talk to the dm and ask him if he is using rules from the core books, other WotC books, or his own. If he says he is using core, look at spells in the book, and templates in the monster manual. Make sure to tell him that your wizard is going to a library first so that you aren't cheating in any way. When you hve the books I would look mostly at:

a) Necromancy Spells
b) Cleric Spells
c) Transmutation Spells
d) Undead related info

If he tells you he is using another WotC book, ask to see all of his other ones while you are in a library and see if you can find anything. If he tells you he invented something, decide with your fellow players if you want to have a dm who does that and either find a new dm or accept it.
