| mhr7409-03-05, 12:00 PM | Can Assassins (PrC in DMG- 3.0 rules) search for traps as a Rogue, meaning the can detect traps that are magic and/or over DC 20? |
| Kes Alanadel09-03-05, 12:30 PM | According to RAW no they are not able to find them. To be able to find traps that are magical, or with a DC of over 20, the character must have the trapfinding ability. Assasins don't have that as a class feature. ~Kes |

Does class skill imply they have the same trapfinding ability as rogues? Am I missing something here? |
| Jagyr Ebonwood09-03-05, 12:43 PM | You're looking at the 3.5 PHB and the 3.0 DMG, methinks. "Trapfinding" is a class ability for 3.5 rogues. But anyway, like Kes said, the RAW state that you have to be a rogue to do those things. Not too big of a deal, since most assassins will have a couple (if not several) levels of rogue as well. However, if you got to assassin via bard or some other class, then you'll find your searching and disabling skills lacking compared to the "typical" assassin. |
| Kes Alanadel09-03-05, 12:47 PM | Anyone can find and disable a non-magical trap with a DC of less than 20 if they have the skills to do it. A straight fighter can find the trap with a search check, and if they have ranks in disable device (as cross class) they can attempt to disable it. That same fighter though, cannot find or disable a magical trap, or one with a DC of over 20 because trapfinding is not a class feature for a fighter. In the 3.5 PHB (we no longer have the 3.0 book) rogue is the only class that has trapfinding, and I'm pretty sure that was the same in 3.0. There are a couple other classes in supplements that has trapfinding as a class skill. ~Kes |

I don't even have access to 3.5 PHB. what's the difference btwn 3.0 and 3.5 in this regard? This is a wizard/ assassin, so no levels of rogue which is why I ask. |
| ridiculous09-03-05, 12:57 PM | You can't find them. However you could spot magical traps with detect magic. Or better yet, take a level of rogue. |
| wonlee7609-03-05, 02:44 PM | I don't recall whether the Find Trap spell is Divine only or not. If its Divine only, you could design an arcane version of the Find Trap spell which temporarily gives you the Trapfinding ability. |

The difference is that in 3.5, the rogue has a class ability gained at 1st level called "trapfinding." This ability allows him to locate and disable magical traps as well as traps with a DC higher than 20. Non-rogues cannot do this normally. |

Some feat? |
| Kes Alanadel09-03-05, 09:27 PM | No there isn't any feat for it, it's a class specific feature that only rouges and scouts get (I think those are the only 2 classes :thinks: ). The only way to get that feature is to take a level in the class. |
| ShadowDragon868509-03-05, 09:29 PM | Take a level-dip in Rogue. Scout or Ninja might also have it, but probably not at first level. |

| Kes Alanadel09-03-05, 09:48 PM | Page 81 of the PHB (3.5) has a table under the search skill: "Notice a typical secret door or a simple trap DC 20: Find a difficult nonmagical trap (rogue only) DC 21 or higher: Find a magical trap(rogue only) DC 25+spell used to create trap" ~Kes |
| Lord Schpungus09-03-05, 10:28 PM | Page 47 of the 3.0 PHB: Traps: Rogues (and only rogues) can use the Search skill to locate traps when the task has a Difficulty Class higher than 20. Finding a nonmagical trap has a DC of at least 20, higher if it is well hidden. Finding a magic trap has a DC of 25 + the level of the spell used to create it. Rogues (and only rogues) can use the Disable Device skill to disarm magic traps. A magic trap generally has a DC of 25 + the level of the spell used to create it. |
| Kes Alanadel09-03-05, 10:37 PM | Search (INT) Check: The character generally must be within 10 feet of the object or surface to be searched. It takes 1 round to search a 5-foot-by-5-foot area or a volume of goods 5 feet on a side; doing so is a full-round action. Task DC ---- -- Ransack a chest full of junk to find a certain item 10 Notice a typical secret door or a simple trap 20 Find a difficult nonmagical trap not of stone (rogue only)* 21+ Find a magic trap (rogue only)* 25+ spell level used to create Notice a well-hidden secret door 30 *Dwarves who are not rogues can use Search to do this if the trap is built into or out of stone. Active Abjuration spells within 10 feet of each other for 24 hours or more create barely visible energy fluctuations. These fluctuations give characters a +4 bonus to Search checks to locate such Abjuration spells. While anyone can use Search to find a trap whose DC is 20 or less, only a rogue can use Search to locate traps with higher DCs. Finding a nonmagical trap has a DC of at least 20, and the DC is higher if it is well hidden. Finding a magic trap has a DC of 25 plus the level of the spell used to create it. Identifying the location of a snare spell has a DC of 23. Special: A character who does not have the Track feat can use the Search skill to find tracks, but can only follow tracks if the DC is 10 or less. Bold mine. Sorry it took so long to find this....had to make dinner :D ~Kes |
| Fixxxer09-04-05, 03:56 AM | How does the 3.5 non-rogue gain this ability of Trapfinding? The same way that a barbarian gains the rage ability or a cleric gains the turn undead ability...by virtue of being the character class he is. At 1st level, a rogue automatically gains the trapfinding ability. |
