Oh sure, it'll be a long campaign, but can any players really be expected to defeat that monster?

Such as how many characters in the campaign, character classes and levels, etc.?
sdragon1984 05-20-06, 11:18 PM	are they in epic levels? if not, they have no chance. if so, then its possible, depending on the levels, but if the average is below level 33, i would risk it.

When it is epic, it is hard to be creative. Have you ever tried to build a villian in the range he is talking about? It is long, and tiring.

To answer your question, yes, I have built a BBEG to about level 38 for my own epic campaign. The OP said he was going to running a long campaign, which implies that there's going to be a long and tiring creative process anyways, so why would you slack off in the creation of the BBEG, the center of the entire story?

Unless you Let them be ANY class they want to be, any Race within Reason and Buy Any Items they like with no Restrictions aslong as you Give them enough towns between adventures to visit - and Dont skimp on the loot and Let whatever the Random Item Rolls Come up as Stay. (I have a habit of not letting them have certain things and rerolling them till its more palatable). But in all seriousness if you wanna throw them up against an Epic level (is it Gesalt???) Character without a Devastation beetle of their own (for a hell beetle duel) Would be kinda ... One sided.
