Hmm... looking at that it doesn't quite impart what I want to get across.

Here is a more longwinded version.

In previous editions of D&D the DM's job was easier. Saves were, if I recall, the same across the board based on Class and Level. In other words two 17th level fighters would have the same saves vs. Rod, Staff, Wand. Proficiencies were fewer. Under the current system (Edit: calculations are need lessly convoluted) if I don't want to use a stock NPC from the DMG I have to spend hours building one guy and then he gets killed in the first encounter. This is not a big deal at low levels but the higher you go it just gets worse.

Does anyone have a method or tips to streamline this stuff?

Use this NPC Generator (http://www.aarg.net/~minam/npc.cgi). It's faster, you can even create many NPCs at once, each with 2 goals and recent past.
