The party is a

Male Human Level 17 Wizard/Pale Master 5/Mind Bender 1/ Elemental Savant 1

Female Drow Level 14 Wizard/ Cleric 4

Human Male Level 6 Ranger/ Rogue 12

Human Male Level 4 Cleric/ 10 Paladin

They're about to face a Tarrasque. Is there anyway they can win? Any ideas of what they should do?

Try to give the characters warning. They'll buy the stuff they need to get around its protections.

Failing that, make sure one of the mages has a quickened teleport for emergencies.

Hard to say without an inventory of equipment, stats and such.

Assuming all else is equal, I would say:

Some of them. Notably the uber one.

That poor Paldin/Cleric. Remind him to pray.

Levels 24, 18, 18, and 14.
Something feels kinda unbalanced here.

Anyway. With a little luck, they will be able to defeat the monster. Just make sure they prepare a few Wish and/or Miracle spells before the battle.

Let them use good ranged weapons and flying tactics, that should work. BTW, why is there a lvl difference of 10 between 2 players in your game, that seems kinda big and can make life for the paladin cleric very hard compared to the lvl 24 mage.

If the player behind the wizard is really skilled, and a tad lucky...maybe.
The cleric/paladin is SO dead, however.

How did the characters get so far apart? Honestly, if you send these people against the big t, I think running away is the only option, or they're all getting squished. Unless they're really lucky.

Er... the 24th level guy beats the tarrasque all by himself, while the others watch?

Seriously though - the tarrasque as listed in the book is fairly stupid, has no ranged attacks, and can't fly. So by time PCs are anywhere near being ready to face a monster of its listed CR, they should basically not be in much danger from it - they can just do things to it from the air.

In particular, a Will save of +20 isn't all that invulnerable against some of the spell DCs your casters will be likely to be able to throw around. Sure, you might have to try a few times to break both its Will save and its SR, but a 20th level caster should probably be able to break both at least 1 times in 4, and quite possibly more often than that. That does not bode well for the tarrasque's life expectancy.

There are numerous "kill the tarrasque" threads, of which this is one (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=408543&page=1&pp=30). Of course, given the tarrasque's vulnerabilities to PCs around 20th level, you may find it mildly amusing to read some of my thoughts on why the tarrasque might SEEM so easy to kill (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=5880891&postcount=47).

The reason for the differing levels, is pretty much just PC deaths. The Wizard never died, the others have. The level 14 guy, well, he doesn't show up enough, so he knows he's gonna die.

They're about to face a Tarrasque.

Why do DM's feel the need to use this monster all the time? Just because its in the MM doesn't mean you have to use it.

Because it's cool. Look at that pose! It's so stylish!

You know you want to. All the cool DM's are using it too.
