Can you find the room's trap by searching the door? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Title says it for the most part. The players are checking a door for a trap. The actual trap is in the room beyond. There is no trap on the door.

When the door closes, however, and halfway through the next room, a proximity trap is set off.

How do the players find the trap? Would they have to search the room for traps or something?

I say yes, they can find it by searching the door. IF shutting the door is what sets off the trap, then some part of the trap mechanism has to be attached to the door, it would seem. So if they can find the trip wire attached to the door, I'd say they can follow it and find the rest of the trap.

As symphonic_tempest said.

If conditions to the trap are:

A) Door closes.

B) Pressure point halfway.

Then there is some significant chance that part of "A)" can be found.

Now they might not know about B at this point, but certainly if the DC is made, "There is some type of trap that is connected in some way to the door."

Since it is a two part trap, it is not likely to be triggered by finding, and messing with A...which means it can be disarmed, much easier.

If what was said in the original post is true, that's how I'd rule it.
