Once per round when your mount is hit in combat, you may attempt a Ride check (as a reaction) to negate the hit. The hit is negated if your Ride check result is greater than the opponent’s attack roll. So everytime an opponent tries to trip your mount can you make a ride check to negate the trip? |
| Shaggy_Shaggs03-30-08, 01:26 PM | Well, once per round anyway. And that'd be opposed to the touch attack to initiate the trip, not the strength check to bring the horse down if the touch succeeds. |

| E_Vernon03-30-08, 01:33 PM | A second question about mounted combat: Can your mount make attacks on a charge if it has natural attacks such as a bite? And if an opponent provokes a 10 foot area, when you perform a mounted charge in and out of the square do you provoke attacks of opportunity? Can the opponent then trip on these attacks of opportunity? |
| Malek299103-30-08, 01:46 PM | Yes the mount would get an attack. The mount would be using it's action to charge and would get an attack with its primary natural attack. You would take the normal AC penalty, and if you make an attack you would also gain the normal +2 attack bonus. Yes you would provoke if you go through the treatened square. Take note the monster can choose to direct the AOO at either you or your mount (not both even w/ combat reflexes). The opponent would be able to trip, only if he could normally trip an opponet w/o making a touch attack. (i.e wolf's trip attack). |
| E_Vernon03-30-08, 02:10 PM | Thanks. The opponent would be able to trip, only if he could normally trip an opponet w/o making a touch attack. (i.e wolf's trip attack). Would using a tripping weapon count as a wolf's trip would? |
| E_Vernon03-30-08, 04:57 PM | Does anybody know? I can't find it stated word for word in the books. |
| The_Ditto03-30-08, 05:08 PM | Thanks. Would using a tripping weapon count as a wolf's trip would? the wolf's trip ability is .. "special" .. it "triggers" only after a wolf hits normally. I do not believe there are any rules that state that that makes the wolfs bite a weapon you can choose to "trip with" (ie tripping weapon). In other words .. even if a wolf had high Int (eg via Druid wildshape, or Awaken), he can't choose to trip via a touch attack and not do damage .. as that's not how his special trip ability functions. |
| E_Vernon03-30-08, 05:40 PM | Thanks, that makes sense, but I was asking more in the other direction. Maybe I should explain the situation. I have a character that likes to trip. He, of course, uses a reach weapon that is capable of making trip attempts. I then have a mounted opponent that uses a lance. The mounted opponent will be charging and the player will be trying to trip the mount (not the rider). The opponent has Ride-by-Attack. So the PC will attempt to trip, the rider will roll a ride check to negate the trip, then he'll make his own charge attack. Then he'll move out of threatened squares on his mount. Can the PC then use the AoO to trip the mount? |
| Metafictional03-30-08, 09:48 PM | Yes, you can use your AoO to trip an enemy. |
