| GFC_Seracule03-13-06, 08:49 PM | I counted my funds recently and noted that I have more money than I thought I did, and I was wondering what would be the best book to buy. I have the Core books, XPH, RotD, RotW, LoM, MMIII, UA, CV, Draconimicon, and that's all I can think of right now. I have access to MMII, Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, Waterdeep, and CW. I will begin DMing a game soon (I will share the job), and I currently play in an Eberron game weekly as a scout/psion. I would like to know what you guys suggest for a fledgling DM/player for a few months. I was thinking of DMGII or the Mini's book, and I plan on getting CP when it comes out. Responses please!! -TiA |
| Zherog03-13-06, 08:55 PM | Well, the Eberron Campaign Setting might be a good purchase if you are playing there - and especially if you plan to run a game there. Otherwise, have you considered a subscription to Dungeon magazine? It's a wonderful resource. |

| GFC_Seracule03-13-06, 09:02 PM | Well, I was thinking of getting Eberron, but then the person I am co-DMing with got Forgotten Realms first, so we're playing there. I don't have Dungeon but I do have Dragon. I'm not really sure what I want; a little bit of everything, I guess. I enjoy giving players options: race-wise, class-wise, and feat/skill-wise. I really think I'm in need of DMing tips, especially ones on adventure design; that I'm not really good at. -TiA |
| RK)1303-13-06, 09:08 PM | I have found the DMG2 to be a great resource, especially if you want DMing tips |
| PenderGrass03-13-06, 09:13 PM | I really think I'm in need of DMing tips, especially ones on adventure design; that I'm not really good at. -TiA DMG II is a good option. Zherog has a good option as well - DUNGEON magazine has a good onlsaught of DM-rich material, but it is a "book" that builds over the period of a year or more. DMG II would probably give you the most, in the quickest manner. :dragon: **** |
| GFC_Seracule03-13-06, 09:20 PM | I'm enticed. What sort of 'crunchy' stuff does DMGII have? |
| Shedeo03-13-06, 10:25 PM | Lets see... Tips on how to deal with specific player types (such as the guys that always want to stay cool under pressure, etc) an entire example city called Saltmarsh, which I believe was in Dragon a long while ago, new things for npcs,... And a heck of a lotta tips in general that just help out quite a bit. Also, the dreaded list of things not to do as a dm can be found here. *looks down the list* My old DM did all of them,... I've only done two,... Anyways, oodles and boodles of stuff that helps out with oodles and boodles of stuff. That's really the best way I can put it, I guess. |
| RK)1303-13-06, 10:52 PM | The way I explain it to my friends is that the DMG tells you the what of dming... the rules and effects of running a game. The DMG2 gives you tips on how to DM. IMHO, The entire first chapter should be required reading for all DMs. |
| Board_Rider03-13-06, 11:03 PM | I would recommend either of the Heroes of... books or Libris Mortis. But I am slanted. |
| K_Beast03-13-06, 11:13 PM | *tries to envision having extra money for D&D books...* Ah well...lucky you. Good problem to have! :) Allow me to voice my support for books already mentioned here. DMG 2 is a really useful resource - although not a whole lot of crunchy stuff. Many good nuggets of inspiration though. Especially for newer DMs. Dungeon Magazine is my favorite resource as a DM - although it doesn't have much to offer to players. There's nothing like having a constant source of designed adventures to take good stuff from or run straight out of the magazine. Most of their writing is really good stuff and there are some good 'support articles' like 100 Things You Can Find at the Local Marketplace . Your local game shop probably has back issues on hand too, so you can build up your collection quickly. If you like Eberron (and I LOVE Eberron) the campaign setting is excellent. Not only does it cover all the basics you need to run this setting, but its also a pretty good read. The new Eberron Player's Guide is also a good buy, although I would start with the campaign setting first. I'm also a big fan of the 'Complete' books, but you should only buy the one(s) that pertain to your current character or favorite/most played character types. At least to get started. |
| Kage_Ryu03-13-06, 11:19 PM | I'm having this exact same problem - I found christmas chapters gift certificate cards and now I don't know what to buy: I'm setting my eyes on either MMII, DMGII, Complete Adventurer, BoED, or BoVD One friend has CA so I don't need to neccesarily worry about that... I quickly looked through DMGII and got the impression it wasn't up to par, but you guys say it's that good? Also I don't have the mags, if I pooled up some money, is it worth it? |
| Rathje03-13-06, 11:28 PM | Of the ones listed, I'd suggest Complete Warrior. I found it to be useful both as a DM and a player. |
| Xaktsaroth03-14-06, 12:39 AM | Honestly? I'd vote for an Eberron book or two. Eberron adds a lot of stuff that can be added to almost any campaign, and the 4 new races are just dripping with awesomeness. Outside of campaign setting stuff, I'd recommend Magic of Incarnum, Libris Mortis, BoVD, and BoED, in that order. Magic of Incarnum is made of awesome and win. |
| TalonofTiamat03-14-06, 12:35 PM | Outside of campaign setting stuff, I'd recommend Magic of Incarnum, Libris Mortis, BoVD, and BoED, in that order. Magic of Incarnum is made of awesome and win. Huzzah! some support for Magic of Incarnum. It is the most interesting book I've gotten in the last year. Libris Mortis is also a very well done book. Although it's really only useful if you plan on using lots of undead. The Ebberon Campaign Setting is also a pretty good buy. I don't even use the world and I find the stuff useful. Although if you're looking for good info on the races, Races of Ebberon is a good choice. I never really found the things in BoED or BoVD all that great. Neither really seemed worth the money. Just my :twocents: |
| loki8703-14-06, 12:43 PM | All the suggestions above are good ones, but you may want to hold out for the new Tome of Magic in case it has a lot of goodies in it. |
| GFC_Seracule03-14-06, 08:56 PM | Do you really think DMGII is worth it? 'Cause I found that on Amazon I could get it and the Minis book for 45 bucks. |
| RK)1303-14-06, 09:01 PM | Amazon does that with most of the books. I got Complete Divine and Complete Adventurer a while back for a cut rate. Same with Libris Mortis and the Draconomicon. Actually, I buy most of my books that way... Besides, the Minis book has been going for around 14 bucks, so the DMG2 is most of that price. The DMG2 is worth it, as is the Magic of Incarnum.. I am a big fan of that system. |
| GFC_Seracule03-14-06, 09:22 PM | But what do you think of the Mini's handbook? I have like three dozen of them, and I can probably get my younger siblings who also have a bunch to pay for part of it. Is the combo a good deal? |
| Zherog03-14-06, 09:30 PM | I like the mini handbook - there's some interesting stuff. It's got a little bit of cheese, but most books do. |
| GFC_Seracule03-14-06, 09:38 PM | What do you mean by cheese? |
| dungeonmasterblog03-14-06, 09:48 PM | Spell Compendium would be a good pickup or if you're looking for a canned adventure, Red Hand of Doom. Although I also like the one person's idea of a Dungeon Magazine subscription. Dungeon Master http://www.dungeonsdragonsblog.com |
| RK)1303-14-06, 10:02 PM | Pretty much any of the 2 book deals on Amazon are a good deal, as they generally net you 6 or 7 bucks and free shipping on the books. Though, for me, Amazon is a pretty local company (Seattle) and I always support local companies. |
| Ongorth03-14-06, 10:25 PM | As far as getting a book that gives advice for running a game, I highly reccomend the second edition Vampire the Masquerade Storytellers handbook. More then half the book is useless (much of it even if you play Vampire), but the essays in particular are extremely useful to get you thinking about what goes into a successful roleplaying game, so long as you read them with that in mind. The DMG and the DMG II both fail in this department. While many people highly reccomend the introductory chapters of both books, I find them chaff. Maybe if you are completely green and want some advice its ok. I'm not sure, some of it seems incongruent with what makes a good game. For more general resources, I find myself looking at MM3 and UA very often, but you have both of those. More classes and options are usually not a good bet: you'll get them then just become disappointed when you don't have more. Then, you'll buy more and still won't be satisfied. I'd go for Lords of Madness or even Libris Mortis. Both give good monster ideas, dungeon ideas and plot/campaign angles to mess around with. They are complete in themselves and fairly inspirational, both good qualities. |
| sneak_Blast03-14-06, 10:44 PM | I believe the DMG2 is one of the best books that wizards has come out with. It has stuff for everybody. (especially you as a DM). It tells about how to make your game more exciting and fun for your players. There are so many little things that I'll just make a list of the big ones: 1. DMing Tips -everything from finding your players wants to what to do with prep time to rules for special situations (ex: treetop battles, crowds, volcanos, etc.) 2. Magic Items -more magic items, magical properties, etc 3. Traps -find the perfect way to befuddle your PCs with interesting, complex traps. Also includes trap enhancers and your plan-old-regular traps 4. NPCs -a variety of multiclassing NPCs that can fit into a number of different settings those are just some of the things the DMG2 includes. I think it was the best book I ever got. |
| Xykon03-14-06, 11:01 PM | I'm having this exact same problem - I found christmas chapters gift certificate cards and now I don't know what to buy: I'm setting my eyes on either MMII, DMGII, Complete Adventurer, BoED, or BoVD One friend has CA so I don't need to neccesarily worry about that... I quickly looked through DMGII and got the impression it wasn't up to par, but you guys say it's that good? Also I don't have the mags, if I pooled up some money, is it worth it? Um you might not want to get MM2 not unless you play 3.0. Its a good book, i have a copy myself however i find it significantly daunting to use in 3.5. I tried running a "random encounter", had printed out the erratta side by side with MM2, and whenever there's an encounter i spend like 2-5 minutes to read up the creature and 20 minutes to convert those DR 10/+2's, hardness, construct traits, fiendish traits. And still i can get things wrong... From what the other posters are saying, looks like the mags are a worthy investment... |
| Zherog03-15-06, 08:07 AM | What do you mean by cheese? I have to find my book to give specifics, but here's an example. There's a belt that gives a +6 to either 3 or 6 stats (I forget which). The belt is cheaper than buying +6 items for each stat individually. As another piece of potential cheese... The Marshal class in the book is really cool. But it also slides very nicely into a build looking to abuse the Diplomacy skill, due to the way some of the auras work. It's not bad normally, but it can be exploited. There's two examples. Like I said, though, it's a good book with some fun options. Just reprice the belt or ban it, and most DMs don't need to worry about Diplomancer cheese. ;) |
| neobolts03-15-06, 09:08 AM | I can't go w/o my Complete _________ series. I'd work on getting all those first. Other good crunchy books are Oriental Adventures (albeit v3.0) and Spell Compendium. |
| neobolts03-15-06, 09:14 AM | Amazon does that with most of the books. I got Complete Divine and Complete Adventurer a while back for a cut rate. Same with Libris Mortis and the Draconomicon. Actually, I buy most of my books that way... Buy.com does the "pairing up" of books too. Their current gimmick is that they are undercutting Amazon, so I bought my own set of Complete books and Exalted Deeds...and make out like a bandit. (They match Amazon's free shipping too, but the shipping option for "free" is easy to miss, so watch for that). |
| Fenris7803-15-06, 09:41 AM | If you are playing FR I have heard Powers of Faerun is very good, and a lot of people seem to consider it a superior DMG2 |
| storm140203-15-06, 09:50 AM | Libris mortus, Book of exhaulted deeds, book of vile darkeness, Faiths & Pahteons, Underdark, Shining south, Silver Marches, Unaprochable east, DMG2, MM4 (soon release), Powers of Faerun, Dragons of Faerun, Complete set, Savage Species, Epic Level Handbook, Weapons of Legacy, Arms & Equipment, Quintenssential Guides by Mongoose publishing, Manual of the Planes, Players Guide to Faerun, Magic of Faerun, Races of Faerun, and the Expanded Psionics Handbook are all decent books. I own all these and I can say if you have the cash and want more options and as much material as you can muster then you need to have them all also. It is a long list however amazon.com has wonderful deals where you can get several books at a cheaper price then anywhere else I have found short of ebay. I hope this helps and you can find them if not then just type in D&D, Dungeons and Dragons etc in amazons search and just look around see what they have. |
| GFC_Seracule03-15-06, 04:35 PM | I think I'll probably get the minis handbook. I don't think that the DMGII is really that necessary, but maybe later on. Thanks guys (girls)! |
| GFC_Seracule03-15-06, 06:18 PM | I've decided on Tome of Magic, unless you guys think that that isn't a good choice. |
