Can you transfer 3.5 Character classes directly into 3.0? [Archive] - Wizards Community

We are having a discussion in our group wether or not we can implement parts of the 3.5 Character classes directly into the 3.0 without upsetting the game balance. It is the 3.5 Bard and the3.5 Ranger we are talking about. Is this possible or would it destroy the way the characters are balanced towards each other? It would be nice if somebody with a little authority in this matter would give their opinion, because we play quite happily by the rules, but we are not that happy with the 3.5 so we are sticking with the 3.0. Still it would be nice to take these two classes into the 3.0 as they are enjoyable to play, but from time to time lack this or that.

We stuck with 3.0 as well but have picked up the 3.5 Bard, Ranger and Monk. We also removed a few skills from 3.0 to match 3.5. No problems.

The Bard gets skill points, never seen that really unbalance anything. The ranger can either be a two-weapon fighter or a bow-fighter (stupid fix) - can't see a balance issue there. The monk takes a little tweaking due to the DR changes (we decided that the first 3.5 DR he gets - 1/Magic or whatever - becomes +1, the second one is +2, etc.)

Yeah, except for Monk DR, you should have no problems porting over the 3.5 Ranger or Bard over to 3.0. The systems aren't THAT differant. Very differant in many aspects, yes, but not so differant that the changed classes are incompatible. Some people may have issues with the power balances of some of them in general (like I still don't think rangers should have gotten Hide in Plain Sight), but if you think the class is balanced in 3.5, then it should be balanced in 3.0 as well.

But overall, yeah, the editions are similar enough you can pick and choose bits and pieces from one to use in the other without too much trouble.

I was wondering how many of the people complaining about the revisions were in the same camp that were making fun of the 2E people for not wanting to change over. I wonder. I wonder if anyone will take the time to stop worshiping at the Temple of the Holy Cook to step back and look at the books and see how great they are.
