Hello everyone! I just stated Dungeons and Dragons with two other friends, and I've decided to become the DM. I was just wondering about this campaign idea. It's capture the flag in Dungeons and Dragons. There's a large board, and on 2 parts of the boards are two bases, each one having a flag. Could two players play against a team of monsters, what if two DMs each made a team of NPCs and put them in the campaign? Just put down your opinion about this campaign. THanks :D

Sounds to me that you might be able to make this work with D&D Minis ... the issue that I see is this: Capture the Flag is a basically a War-game ... you see it in Paintball, and with various FPS games. For that to convert to DnD, you'd almost need a wizard chucking ranged damage spells across the board for each side.

Justin.

Something you might have to deal with more often in such a campaign is character death- the players are far more likely to die trying. So there should be some way that its less permanent and/or debilitating. Sort of like the difference between being "out" in paintball and "dead" in a gunfight.

I think this would be a good idea but to touch on someone's comment. Perhaps make this only a part of a larger cmapaing make ing this a test of some sorts to prove thier worth to king, noble archmage, BBEG for survival. just my two cents

I'm afraid it won't work.

CTF is a great game, but it relies heavily on every player's ability to see only from his own viewpoint. At best, each player can only see a very limited part of the map (the part right around him), and can only see in the direction he's looking. To get a good idea of what's going on in other parts of the playfield, players must communicate. Also, players on a given team must constantly keep track of one another. In formal games where each team has a uniform this isn't hard, but I've won many an informal game by sneaking around behind the enemy's flag, nonchalantly walking up to it like I own the place, acting like I'm just going to move it somewhere, and then making a break for it when people realize that I'm moving their flag awfully close to the other team's side...

In a miniatures game like D&D, the players can always see most or all of the map, there is no concept of "facing", and it's always immediately apparent who's on which team. It's almost impossible not to metagame in situations like this, to the point where it's unfair to expect players not to metagame it. But that metagaming will seriously detract from the experience of the game, to the point where it won't work well.

My point here is that although you could convert the rules to something which could be played on a D&D system, CTF is one of those games which really requires a first-person perspective in order to be at its best.

You could just add a CTF type battle to your campaign
