Recently in my campaign one of my players in on the run and went into the forest. He is a level 8 drow ranger that went the two weapon fighting route. I want to bring him back alive, are there any suggestions as to what group of people or adventures would best be to handle this task?

If his name is also Drizzt Do'Urden he cant be killed...

You would want something that is able to track. A bit of divination magic is also good for finding people.

step 1:make a normal elf ranger, with a diviner friend.

step2: find him, track him down with magic and high survival modifiers

step 3: find out who would win between legolas and drizzt

Bring him back alive? Justiciar is what you want. Prestige class from Complete Warrior specializing in capturing criminals and bringing them back, lots of non-lethal damage abilities.

Simplicity itself! Build a wall around the forest and throw in something that turns trees into sawdust.

"I'll never surrender you pigfaced tree molestor!" Nuremor Tallwood was still feeling defiant in the branches of his great oak.
"Be reasonable! We have destroyed all the other trees. A twenty feet high wall surrounds you." Duke Moordog looked at the distant oak from the newly constructed wooden Pallisade with contempt.
Tallwood signalled crude insults and relaxed back into the Branches.
Idiot. Duke Moordog shook his head.
"Hurgan! Bring up the portable timber mill one last time. We are obviously going to have to redo the maps!"
Sumpy plain indeed.

Ah... Why? What I trying to say is why bring him back? To join a group, start the next phase of your campaign? Why? I do suggest you try pulling instead of pushing. Right now you sound like you are trying to force the character into something. That's called railroading and players *hate* it.

What I mean is give the Ranger a reason to come back on his own. That way the player won't feel hosed, he'll feel like a hero. If you are just doing something where the character needs to face the consequences of his actions don't forget the low tech solution: hunting dogs. Look at the Animal Handling skill where it talks about packages. They probably cost 3/4's the price of a guard dog and work great.

Let's just set the scene: There the Drist wannabe is running through the forest, splashing throught he stream, the sound of dog's howling in his ears he charges up the bank and... then you start the next phase of your campaign.

Eh? One character is mentioned in the post, no monsters, no general party level... and you say TPK? How does that make sense?

Burn the forest down, he'll come out eventually. Or just ignore his character until he decided he's had enough of the forest. Or send in an adventuring party made up of a fighter, rogue, wizard, cleric, of one or two levels higher then the player. A wizard and cleric with spells that can find him, and incapacitate him

If your player ran into the forest thinking he's some kind of a Drizzt clone then call for psychiatric help AND get another player.

Call artimis entreri, and let him find Drizzt. It's what R.A. Salvatore always does.
