Next week my Players will be exploring a cave complex (as well as some anicent ruins) deep under (in some parts a mile) a hidden cove.

Since its so hard to get to this area (the characters needed to get water breathing cast on them by a pirate wizard, and fought 3 megalodans as well as a horde of sharks and dire sharks) I'm having troubles trying to figure out what would be down in the cave complex that could have survived at least 2,000 years in isolation.

The ruins which is a little after the caves but still over a mile underground is a sunken elvish city with a sleeping Elvish Lich in its center. I already know that I want to add in some Stone golems and shield guardians into the ruins to protect him, but what else would be there?

My players are:

level 12 Elf Ranger (dual wield type)
level 12 Human Fighter
level 11 Elf Druid

Any help would be a great help.

Well since it is sealed there would probably deep horrors that died away long ago, put some Aberrations, Taint elementals, and other old creatures like strange dragons or different beholders. Just modify the stats of the creature to make it seem old.

I would suggest not worrying about the lifespans of the monsters. 2000 years is a long time to go without food. Instead think of monsters that are edible for the other monsters. The monsters have just been living generation after generation, just like their counterparts in the rest of the world.

If it makes it easier, consider airshafts to allow monsters in and out of the caves to find food. The airshafts are hard to find on the surface, but can be useful to exit the dungeon quickly (with a high DC in finding the shaft again if the party returns).

well It wouldnt be hard for monsterous ecology to create a decent food chain.
If theres a lich he probably went ahead and probagated monsters to take care of his underground domain while he sleeps. things like fungus and molds and slimes would likely make up the bottom of the food chain. other more powerfull monsters would eat them.

Thats what I would do if you want to make a group of natural cave dwellers. start with the bottom of the food chain say Fish and move up to the top say Dragon.

anyway goodluck man hope they like it.

Another idea is that if I was a Lich with a hord of monsters in the cave next door I would make some of them Undead to protect me. Maybe let your players run into some Undead creatures and they will be wondering 'Why are there Undead down here?' and then Wam! Lich cast spells of doom! Bwahahaha! dang I need to stay of the Coffee (evil coffee that is!)
