| jera09-24-07, 12:34 AM | I recently came across the Cave of a Thousand Voices in a DragonLance book. I cant remember what its called but it was set right after the return of the gods. A tribe of Goblins kidnapped a PC(well as close to a PC as you can get in a book) and trapped her in the Cave. The Cave of a Thousand Voices was described as being able to magnify the tiniest sound by thousands. A elf walking through the cave was described as "Being as loud and as painful as A kender in a drum factory." I am planning on Intergrating it into my game, as a Torcher Chamber in the base of the castle they are invading right now.The group has 5 players, a Dwarven Defender lvl 9, A Elven Wizard lvl 9, A Elven Druid lvl 8, a Human Ranger lvl 9, and a Human Cleric(healing and sun) lvl 9. What should I do to make it challenging for my Group? They are freakishly lucky and only one PC has died since the start of the campaign. Should I make them role a saving throw against insanity or deafness or somthing like that when they cross? Make the cave cause Sonic damage? Is making them fight a banshee too much? Thoughts, Comments, suggestions? Thanks |

I think I would be tempted to have them take sonic damage and then a will save (DC determined by how much noise they make and how small the cave area is) each round they stay in the cave or lose 1d4 points of temporary wisdom damage. Each round the DC increases by two all the time they stay in the area of affect. When the PC is reduced to zero temporary wisdom, they have either gone deaf or mad. It might take a bit of tweaking and checking other rules, I'm not a rules mad DM but that seems to be something I would impose. Obviously a silence spell would negate the effects, keeping very very quiet would help reduce the DC save, and also maybe have it so that the echo of a noise only lasts a few rounds. So a little cough would last only 1d4 rounds, where as a shout "OVER HERE GUYS!!" would last 1d20 rnds. Hope that at least gives you a few ideas. |
