| thofighta12-28-04, 12:54 PM | The thing is that my party and partly I have been kinda bored by the same hack and slash thingy. The lack of roleplaying may partly result in one weirdo PC wanting to bother and bug every NPC he finds but that could be solves by hitting him in the head. But I need something more interesting and new. I am going to hava lowmagic world, making lvl 2 spells the max limit for all spell casters, meaning no spells like fireball, disintegrate, heal, ressurection etc exists. Magic items will still exist, but very few and those few a bit more special ones. Anyone have some great suggestions for a champaign theme or plot lines etc? I want more roleplaying but still some hack an slash, but not just hack and slash, hack and slash meaning something and for a goal... :) |

Taking out magic above level 2 isn't going to do anything except give you an even smaller game to work with, and make D&D even more boring for you and your players. Something we've been trying is to use modules as the basis for the hack and slash, and then re-write the plots that take place in those modules, so that they're personalized for the characters. Try to involve the characters in the plot more- don't just cast them as strangers come to clean out the dungeon or right the wrong or whatever. Ask questions beforehand that get the players thinking about their character's personalities more- if they're just jumbles of stats at this point, they'll need some fleshing out before they can participate in roleplaying more. If you want to sharpen your writing skills so you can write more involved games, you might look into picking up "Story: Substance, Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting", by Robert McKee- This book is directed at writing a screenplay, which isn't quite the same as writing a D&D adventure, but it describes all the usual devices that you might use for spinning a good tale. |

Be careful, it can leave a mean hangover..... Oh..you meant campaign!!! Well first I would advise to lift the ban on the spells and spell levels. You could have your PC's try to recover an acient artifact that was recently discovered in some distant mines. Thing is an evil church knows it's there too. The people who dug it up have no idea what it is. Now the PC's must SECRETLY (no hack n' slash) retrieve the artifact and return it safely to the church that will store it safely. The evil church have dispatched not only a recovery team, but assasins as well to kill any and all who try to recover it before them. Hence the SECRET thing. The Artifact, if released, upon the world will totally obliterate any Arcane magic on the planet. Sure it sounds good but there are magical barriers, items and prisons that will cease to be/protect if the Artifact is activated. The PC's must get to and back without being seen or heard. Make the artifact big enough so it is visible and not easily hidden. Oh yeah, it's intelligent and wants to be unleashed. If the PC's won't do it, the Artifact will get into the minds of those people who will. |

Maybe a rather large object (like board rider said) that can be opened (like in Indiana Jones). Another idea is to just to something cliche, like stop a dragon that is attacking the town, or is about to attack the town if they do not give it treasure or maidens. When I started my campaign it was just a simple dungeon with zombies and skeletons...then I develped the town and NPC's more. just start really simple, and small. Go from there. |
| screwtape12-28-04, 03:36 PM | I recommend Veuve Clicquot. It is very good and affordable. Moet is a drinkable and even less expensive, but not as good. I have never had Dom Perignon, but it has a great reputation. For $150 a bottle, it better be great. http://www.veuve-clicquot.co.jp/ |
| Board_Rider12-28-04, 03:42 PM | Board Rider's idea makes me think of Indiana Jones, the Arc of the Covenent one. Is that the fourth one or something? I have never heard of it. You know another idea for your PC's to roleplay would be to have them be emissaries that go out and try and recruit kingdoms for a pending border war. Wait and see their reactions when the nervous lord asks them to go and actually recruit a few goblin tribes. |
| Cincle12-28-04, 03:55 PM | Might want to try to reward roleplaying with XP bonuses, combined with some sessions with only VERY little hack'n slash and the main focus on the story and NPC ineraction. Like, a campaign based around unraveling the many, many conspiracies involved in the recent assasination of a king, starting off small with an investigation of the local secret assasins group, eventually exposing grand schemes plotted by the highest levels of powers in your game world, in which the death of the king played only a very small part in the plans of an allience of evil dieties seeking destruction of all life to prepare for an all out war between the planes of your world. Or any other plot intense campaign, ofcourse. :) |
| thofighta12-28-04, 09:31 PM | Hm, the advices of yours are all familiar unfortunately. Though they never work out as good as they could have. I guess I'll just have to find a way to cope with the roleplaying problem somehow. Need to plan better I guess, stopped doing that the 15th session everything I had planned was NOT used, not a single bit of it, due to a PC's immense effort to turn my dear world and plans upside down and into a blooming place of anarchism... Just his normal way of behaving really. Well, thanx for answering anyway :) |
| Dash Branaghan12-29-04, 02:44 AM | Is that the fourth one or something? I have never heard of it. Ark of the Covenant is the first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Dash |
| Board_Rider12-29-04, 11:04 AM | Ark of the Covenant is the first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Dash Oh, then I guess I have seen it then....when I was around 9.
